Harper Rhodes Vanderbilt EHS
“So this is the  Elite Highschool ,” Harper said eyeing the school in front of her, to say it was different then Constance would be an understatement. It was given ofcourse, Constance was a New York institution and its architecture reflected that she hadn’t expect this school to look so over the top.
“Apparently it’s just EHS now,” Leo said leaning back against the car. Harper rolled her eyes, she couldn’t decide if EHS was worse than Elite Highcchool, both in her opinion were equally gaudy. “It’s different, very new money,” Leo said looking at eyes wide – ah it was so easy to impress a 13 year old boy. “Boujee, you know,” he said. Harper nose scrunched up, it looked like a resort. Maybe it was, she could believe it was an a rehab clinic it would explain why Sebastian was here. “The girls are cute though,” he said a low whistle escaping his lips.
“And I am sure they all appreciate being checked out by a 13 year old who has his cap on backwards,” Harper said sarcastically, pushing him away. “Go back to playing Mario Kart with your friends online,” she said gesturing for him to get back into their Mercedes.
“At least I have friends,” Leo said sticking his tongue out.
“You two stop,” Harper’s mother said pushing her Balenciaga sunglasses down making sure Harper knew she was looking down at her. “Harper its important you make a good impression here,” she said. “You know what we have riding on this,” she continued. Harper bit her tongue, despite wanting nothing more to bring her cousin down, the we her mother was referring to was purely herself, she couldn’t deal with her daddy issues and now Harper had to deal with repercussions.
“Yes, mother I have to somehow convince Grandfather that his beloved grandson is a waste of space and money,” Harper retorted robotically. She was already acutely aware that this plan was bound to fail, her grandfather was blinded by the heir had wished so long for. It was as primitive as it was pathetic but men. Apparently, the grandchild who flinched when he saw a yellow shirt was worth more than the one who was literally raised to be perfect.
While her mother’s life was a comedy of errors, each getting more extravagant as time goes on, her adopted brother being an exclamation point to that statement. Harpers was more like a Shakespearian tragedy where everything she worked for was given away to a boy who does well nothing.
“Don’t say it so loud,” her mother whispered grabbing her by her wrist. “Remember you have to get Sebastian to trust you, so for a few months just be less…. You,” she said gesturing to Harper. One day Harper knew she would end up in therapists office talking about her parental issues – actually maybe she could make it in a series, make some money once her idiot cousin burns what is left of their families legacy to the ground. “Maybe this time you could even actually make friends, you know play nice maybe even smile,” her mother said. Harper bit the inside her cheek wrenching her hand out of her mother’s grip.
“Great parenting as always Marion,” Harper said sarcastically, walking towards the boot and grabbing her luggage. “Good luck,” she whispered to Leo. He didn’t need it, he was being raised by the maids and the parents of his friends, their mother had literally no part of his life. Luckily.
“You too,” he replied to Harper with a nod and that was that. They weren’t the hugging type of family so with that Harper left to start her school year at EHS.
 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“And that concludes our tour,” Ms Johnson said towering over the students, out of everything she had seen in this school so far Ms Johnson was the most familiar despite her admittedly extravagant attire, that was just too much green, but she was intimidating and from the tour alone it was easy to tell that she wasn’t not someone you should mess with. “Now shoo, go find your dorms or don’t,” she shrugged swirling around on her heels and doing a little kick and sauntering the down hall. Or maybe Harper was wrong and nothing about this place makes sense.
With that the group of around 10 were left to their own accords or they were before other students had noticed them. “Fresh meat,” a portly looking guy called out. Harper crossed her arms, rolling her eyes as she pulled away from the pack not wanting to listen to whatever stupidity was going to come out of the idiot’s mouth.
“Hey where are you going newbie,” a fox faced girl blocked Harper’s exit. Harper raised an eyebrow looking over the girl, her frizzy red hair and obnoxiously obvious fake Chanel purse. At her old school people like this would be cowering in fear off her. Maybe it wasn’t too late, she could always just go back. Sebastian wasn’t worth it.
“Hey isn’t that your cousin,” Harper all but growled when she heard that. Apparently speaking of the devil wasn’t needed anymore merely thinking of him in passing was enough for him and his friends to appear. Harper stepped away from the ginger girl trying to move behind some of the bigger new students but in the last second one had to move leaving her open and able to make eye contact with him. Sebastian’s eyes narrowed as he shock his head at her before coming over.
“Oh hi Sebastian,” the red head girl said trying to smoothing the bird nest she called hair down. “We are busy here Oh,” the chubby boy said his face getting progressively redder with each word.
“Fascinating, I am sure no one here actually cares about the lodge” Sebastian said with an eyeroll, Harper didn’t think that guy from before could get any redder but it seemed as he was turning Maroon. Maybe if he kept this up his head would explode making it a truly memorable first day. “If you’d excuse us,” Sebastian said winking at the red hair girl who could only nod. Harper nose scrunched up in disgust, she knew this girl was an idiot but to be that pathetic – horrifying. “Come on,” he whispered harshly to Harper pushing her forward away from the crowd.
“What are you doing here?” He spat at her after looking to make sure no one was around them.
“Standing mostly,” Harper said. “Occasionally I even take a step and if I really want to go wild I might sit down.”
“What are you doing at my school Harper?” Sebastian basically repeated the same question.
“What do you think I’d be doing at a school Sebastian? I know if you try and get that brain running you might be able to figure it out – unless ofcourse I am giving you too much credit,”
“Is this one of those stupid little plots you and your mother come up with,” he said. Harper gasped dramatically, implying that she would come up with something as idiotic as this.
“What we would never, “ She said as Sebastian snorted. “Okay, fine my mum totally would but I would never, we both know I care way too much about my education to throw it away to try and one up you -  which really I wouldn’t need to do because there is nothing you are better at then me.”
“Oh I don’t know my grandfather would disagree,” He smirked, as Harper’s jaw clenched. Oh they were going straight for the jugular on the first day. Fine. Her mothers plan be damned.
“And yet your father would agree with me,” Harper said smiling at the way Sebastian’s fist balled together. “Now as fun as it is to have this little cousin catch up, I have a dorm to find so,” she said.
“So you are really going here now,” Sebastian said.
“Yes, obviously,”
“Don’t talk to me,’”
“Wasn’t planning on it,” Harper rolled her eyes. “Goodbye Sebastian.”
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Harper blinked owlishly as she walked into her new dorm only to find two beds, one with a girl already sitting on it. Not to be that person but sharing a room was not something Harper did. Co-habiting with some stranger, there had to be a mistake.
“Hey,” the girl said waving awkwardly at Harper. “Harper right? We met at the tour,” the girl said. Harper nodded taking a proper look at the girl under the guise of trying to recall her name. It was clear that she was a scholarship student, her denim jacket looked like it had been worn more than once, her hair was naturally curly and the rounded glasses she wore were not in style in the slightest but she was pretty. She could be prettier if she made an effort though. “You don’t have a problem with having a scholarship student as a roommate right?” she asked. “Because if it is the other thing – than yikes,” she said.
“The other thing?” Harper asked. It was another thing but she was pretty sure it wasn’t the other thing she was referring to.
“You know,” she said gesturing to herself, pointing to her face. “This,” she said gesturing wildly around.
“Gla- oh you mean – no,” Harper said quickly. “I just didn’t think I would have any roommate,” she huffed. “And just so you are aware I don’t remember your name so you might as well just tell me- “ she said going to the bed that was supposedly hers.
“Sophia,” the girl supplied. “And at least you’ve only got one roommate, I heard some people have two or three,” she shrugged.
“Wonderful,” Harper said.
“I am just saying it could be worse,” Sophia shrugged. “Did your – cousin? Tell you about the lodge?” she asked as Harper sat on her bed, she was trying to figure out how to ask the principal to fix this without sounding like a Karen. There was no way.
“Shush, don’t bring that up like ever –“ Harper said. “The less people know I am related to that thing the better,” she snapped. “And no, is it something important? “
“Well unless you are secretly poor I don’t think so, apparently its some sort of secret society that wants to keep their school purely for the wealthy and brainless,” she said rolling her eyes. “Just thought I’d be a good roommate and let you know I may get kidnap one night I would hate for that to ruin your sleep,” she said.
“Ofcourse this school has a secret society,” Harper said rolling her eyes. “So tacky,” she muttered. “For what its worth I am sure they won’t kidnap you, they wouldn’t know how,” she added. “Especially not that red head girl.”
“I feel very reassured,” Sophia said.
