Houkago Karte melted my cold heart.

I am but a puddle because the first proper uncontrollable sobbing of the year has been unlocked. Nothing prepared me for Houkago Karte (After School Doctor according to Netflix) to be such a tearjerker. This show is truly the epitome of the word wholesome and a fine lesson on empathy, kindness and patience.

Watching our grumpy doctor be awkward around kids but always going out of his way to ease their pain was the best kind of healing. Seeing a teacher be aware of her shortcomings as an educator but trying so hard to communicate with her students reminded me what a great place school could be if people tried. And I don't even have much contact with youngsters in real life.

Dr Makino's perpetual self-cringe, teacher Shinoya's overeagerness, and the disarming honesty of the primary schoolers make the show equally funny and endearing. This specific brand of humour provides a good balance to lessen the blow of the more sombre scenes (to be honest each episode could go with some sort of mild trigger warning).

Because yes, the show sometimes reads like a cautionary tale but I appreciate the educational value of each presented case. It's enlightening to see the range of issues young people can struggle with. Houkagu Karte does not shy away from their problems and treats them with all seriousness.

And finally - the show uses its 10 episodes really well. The character growth of all our protagonists reaches a believable point and all threads come together to a satisfying conclusion. I honestly totally lost it with the shower of gratefulness and retrospectives which takes up most of the last episode. It is a well-deserved ending and I wanted to hug them all.

Please give me more shows like this!

The shortest month that always feels like such a drag is finally over. I am in my medical drama era, so maybe I will finally finish Triage next month? Anyhow, Asian drama doctors, please help me cope with life, I'm begging you.

🇯🇵 After School Doctor -> This one takes the crown for my favourite watch of the month. This incredibly gentle and moving story melted my cold heart. A grumpy doctor substituting for a school nurse vs disarming primary schoolers - what could go wrong? Every episode got me laughing and crying in equal measure. All the issues the characters had were treated with care. Fantastic stuff!

🇰🇷 Trauma Code: Heroes on Call -> I didn't know how much I needed a high-energy show like that. It was full of med drama tropes. It had a main character who was noble but rude (classic), a mentor-mentee relationship that apparently I missed very much, humour that had me gasping for air and dramatic tension that had me eating my pillow. What a ride, what a fun ride that one was.

🇯🇵 Jitenshaya-san no Takahashi-kun -> That was such a short and comforting little gem. There's not much angst in it but at the same time, it's not superficial. There is a surprising depth to some scenes and covered themes. Yes, it's just a tale about two people at the beginning of the relationship slowly changing under each other's influence but I am quite pleased with what they managed to tell with its limited runtime. The perfect thing to binge while bedridden with a cold.

🇹🇭 Your Sky -> It was stronger in the beginning than in the latter part, where it basically dissolved into fluff. Did I mind? Not really, but I wasn't that compelled by it either. Overall, it was pleasant to follow, I am very fond of the side couple's odd rituals and admire that the mains had each other's back the whole time.

🇨🇳 My Enemy Has a Crush On Me -> The fact that it's a vertical series is a scandal. These two deserve to have a full-blown, full-length office drama! The chemistry is on point, all the beloved tropes are there (incorporated nicely within the obvious constraints) and even the pacing is almost satisfying. I truly don't know if I am more mad or happy that I found this show (or rather @michkovs pointed me into its direction), cause it's way too short and too VERTICAL for my liking. But if you have an hour to spare, it is a surprisingly fun watch.

I vowed to never give up on a patient before me. A bit cringey, but yeah. You should find your own reason. Something that will keep you in place even when you're worked like a dog and treated like shit. To walk this tough and gritty path for no reason at all is simply too hard.

You blinked up at him. "Dr. Baek?"

He huffed, glancing at the man who had just tried handing you extra paperwork. Without missing a beat, Kang Hyuk grabbed the files and shoved them right back into the guy’s chest. "Do your own work." His tone was final, and the man scurried off without another word.

You sighed, looking up at him. "I could’ve handled it."

"Yeah, I know," he muttered, watching you closely. "That’s the problem."

You frowned, confused.

Kang Hyuk crossed his arms, standing protectively close to you. "You’re smart. You know exactly when people are using you, but you let it happen anyway." His sharp gaze softened slightly, but his voice remained firm. "Stop doing that."

You let out a breath, a small smile tugging at your lips. "You sound like you’re worried about me."

"Tch," he clicked his tongue, looking away, but the way his hand lingered near yours didn’t go unnoticed. "If I don’t look out for you, who will?"

And just like that, Baek Kang Hyuk became your unexpected protector.

I've been thinking about how she was barely living, just existing until he returned. He comes back and. Yes, she responds with anger and annoyance and frustration. BuT she's responding, she's coming alive again.

Her life post the breakup, her job, her parents death, has shrunk and she is embarrassed and stuck in the past with everyone knowing everything and treating her like a servant. And she'd given up, she hit on the nurse but he realised she didn't really want him, it was just anything to add a spark.

He arrives and she is so angry, and I think he deliberately stokes it to bring her back to life, to make her live and care again. And she can't resist, can't resist the stupid bet and their constant bickering.....just like the lilac tree - she will bloom.....
