so there are a couple ways this can go

first is to act like you had no idea, usually these people will respond appropriately when they hear about it, but ultimately they'll take a "well what can ya do" attitude over the whole thing and not change their behavior

but then there are the people are way past being able to claim plausible deniability about what kind of stuff was on pornhub, these are the ones that immediately try to pivot the conversation to the censorship/Queer Indie Creators angle (while of course not materially supporting those creators) and then call you a fascist when you say "ok great but back to the unverified age/consent issue"

hey so pornhub putting age verification and losing most videos doesn't mean it was mostly children it means most people never verified. that argument is beyond stupid and blatantly false. real life is bad enough you don't need to make nonsensical and illogical arguments that don't make sense if you think about it for two seconds. if youtube implemented ID verification to upload, most content would also be gone. that doesn't mean most youtube videos were made by/of children

and if it seems weird to you that i'd be critical of the online safety act but supportive of the pornhub wipe, it's basically this:

"watching this video might be harmful to minors" - squishy, unclear, open to interpretation and easy to misuse

"watching this video has harmed minors" - grounded, easier to prove, but still not necessarily universal

"this is a video of a minor being harmed" - incontrovertibly bad, should be a no-brainer to try to prevent that from happening

and the platform of the people crying censorship revolves around taking any instances of the second and third things and arguing against them as though they're the first

the internet has been widely available for 30 years and the entire time has been an incessant game of whack-a-mole of trying to ensure that adult content is only accessible by adults with this just being the latest attempt

it's definitely an overreach and a byzantine nightmare and very very UK but it's ultimately just the pendulum swinging away from "are you over 18 y/n" as the only form of age verification, i'm guessing the stuff like face upload and AI age estimation will fall through but some of the broader parts will stick
