Excuse me,
but what is this bull I’m reading about Carrie Fisher having to earn her role as Leia in The Force Awakens?
Is there any other Leia I’m not aware of?
So what, if she hadn’t lost those 15 pounds they would have cast someone else? Like seriously.
Let put aside the whole ‘losing weight’ for a role thing, a role that has actually nothing to do with what one’s body looks like. Let us talk about the fact that this is not just any actress, playing any character, on some random sci-fy movie.
Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia in Star Wars is ICONIC. There is no Leia without Fisher, it’s that easy. With 150 lbs, or with 550 lbs, Fisher is Leia, and I think that after all these years, after everything Star Wars accomplished, with everything this franchise is, I think it’s downright insulting to ask a woman to lose weight for a movie. It was insulting 40 years ago when they did the first time, and it’s insulting now.
Shame on you!

In response to the outcry over a black Stormtrooper:
While originally, the Stormtrooper Corps was composed entirely of clones based on the Fett template (i.e. the clone troopers of the Grand Army of the Republic), the Corps was no longer dominated by Fett’s progeny after the Battle of Kamino in 12BBY.
After the Galactic Civil War kicked off, the Fett clones were heavily supplanted by a variety of other clone templates by 9BBY, and were followed shortly by enlisted Humans, ergo – canonically, it makes sense that there would be at least one or two black Stormtroopers.
You’re whining because you’re racist, shut up.

“Man I wish I lived in the Star Wars Universe”
Expectation: Smuggler ship captain; Badass bounty hunter; Jedi; Sith.
Reality: Dirt poor outer rim planet inhabitant; lower level slum dweller so far beneath the surface level it might just as well be another planet; Trooper with the aim of a catarct afflicted octagenarian and the life expectancy of a fruit fly.

An open letter to anyone considering watching Star Wars for the first time
Hello!
Welcome to Star Wars! Since the new movie is coming out, I have noticed a lot of people who are just now seeing Star Wars for the first time. Given the immense amount of cultural significance, plus the size and intensity of the fandom, I realized that this might be a little intimidating and confusing. So here are a few basic, spoiler free things that you should know about our beloved series.
  1. The order you watch it in does matter. There are 3 basic viewing orders to choose from, and what seems like the most obvious one is actually, imo, the worst way to watch them.
Episodic order: 1,2,3,4,5,6 (not recommended) While this probably seems like the way the movies should be watched, there are actually very few benefits to this order for a first time viewer. Pros: Cohesive, straightforward, and chronologically simple. Cons: Spoils major twists in less than fun ways. The movies were released in the order seen below, and many twists of the story are completely ruined by this order, as everything just sort of happens without any real surprises. In addition, starting with episode 1 is just not a good way to set your tonal expectations for the rest of the series.
Release order: 4,5,6,1,2,3 (Decent) If you want the same experience most people have had, this is the way to go. Pros: Narratively makes sense, easily relatable to everyone else. Cons: The ending of episode 3 isn’t the end. It leads right into the sequel trilogy, so you end on a narratively dark note.
Machete order: 4,5,1,2,3,6 (My recommendation for any first time viewer). This is my personal favorite. It maintains, and even improves all major narrative twists and we get the excellent tie together of old and new trilogies by ending with the last episode chronologically, setting us up for episode 7. Pros: Narratively makes the most sense while not making you end in the middle of the series. Preserves the original ideas of Lucas and company’s presentation without making the prequels feel unnecessary. Cons: not really what most people did when they watched star wars. It might bother some people to pause the future story while they go through the prequels. Whichever order you choose, do make sure you watch them all, and watch them fairly close together. There are a lot of plot threads to deal with.
2. Star Wars might not be what you expect it to be. You will hear a lot of people call Star Wars sci-fi. If you have seen Star Trek, or read Asimov or Herbert, Star Wars might be a little jarring. It certainly has those elements, but in my opinion it is more accurate to call star wars “space fantasy”. Narratively it is closer to fantasy than most sci-fi. Things explode in space, and ftl is conspicuously fast and easy. This series isn’t about the science, it’s based on myth and legend.
3. Don’t feel bad if it’s not your thing/you like the prequels/you find the originals weird. People in this fandom are nuts. Me included. I cry every time a new trailer comes out. We’re passionate about our movies. The downside of that is that we tend to be very defensive about them. You’ll hear people hate on just about everything, but form your own opinions. If you like the prequels, more power to you. If you find that the whole series is overrated, that’s ok too. Don’t let anyone make you feel bad about how you feel about it, bc…
4. Star Wars is for everyone. That’s right. Bc as much as our huge family disagrees with itself on just about everything, and some of us simply refuse to talk to each other, at the core of it all, you will find amazing people from all walks of life who will cosplay, write, act, teach, learn, and love this stuff. And everyone is welcome to this, because Star Wars is absolutely enormous. We have room for you, whoever you are. At the very core of these movies is the single idea that compassion, acceptance, tolerance, patience, and dedication, aka “the light side of the force” is what really matters. If you believe those things, you’ll have no problem understanding why we love this story so damn much. I’m excited for you all, padawans. May the force be with you.

if you took a lightsaber out in the rain would the rain evaporate before it hit the blade? would there be just be this hissing noise as the water immediately boiled and evaporated into steam? would the rain interfere with the heat of the blade? what if you stuck a lightsaber in water? would the blade hold up or would it just continuously boil the water around it?

PSA about Tony Veitch
Hey guys, both based in NZ and elsewhere:
Tony Veitch is a victim-blaming, self-excusing abuser. This is fact. There is literally no other way to present what he’s done and he is in zero way defensible (Tumblr user @hadassahgrace wrote up a very in-depth piece about his actions here, for those of you who are not aware of this man and his despicable actions). Currently, half of NZ is arguing about this, which makes zero sense to me because I don’t understand what there is to argue: he broke his partner’s back in multiple places and he never even went to jail. Moreover, he has never taken accountability for his actions, nor has he done any work towards raising awareness for the domestic violence issues we have, despite being reinstated to a position where he gets to broadcast on a major public platform (which I’m still amazingly furious about).
This is something that is probably more internationally-relevant than ever, because he’s a pretty major sports presenting personality in a rugby-intensive country, and, guess what? It’s the Rugby World Cup right now. I know that most people here probably don’t care about the RWC, or have no interest in this asshole because he lives in a country on the other side of the world from you, but this is really important, and it would be super for this to get more traction. This guy is blaming KDP (Kristin Dunne-Powell, whose statement to the police identified more than one act of domestic violence), the woman he brutally injured and then refused to call an ambulance for, and he is being validated for it by being given a status of celebrity and a position of major platform which he has used to paint himself as the victim in this situation, and had thousands defend him. This is a New Zealand narrative, but it’s one that could happen in many places; this happens to have a NZ context, but that doesn’t make it any less important to promote awareness about, because this is bullshit. This is not okay.
There’s a pretty solid amount of angry tweeting going on if you search Tony Veitch (which I am proud to be a part of, because we have to use our platforms, limited as they may be, to raise awareness for important issues and call people out on their problematic trash) and the relevant Facebook post on his Veitchy on Sports page is filled with thousands of comments both in defense of and against him. If you’re interested, feel free to look them up or to contact me and I’ll direct you to some or make a compilation or something.
Bottom line is, though, this behaviour is absolutely sickening and is not okay. This is not something we can allow to be validated, and it’s something I just really ask you to reblog and raise awareness of, because it makes me absolutely sick to my core that he can say this shit and be validated by the public - and worst of all, that KDP and the people who love her can see this shit and also see people defending it. He broke her back, and he’s talking about rebuilding after a hideous relationship - must be so tough, Veitchy. Totally as tough as rebuilding your fucking back after a hideous relationship where your partner kicked it in and broke it, not to mention rebuilding her trust in people and her life. She quit her job and everything after it all, because of the enormity of the trauma she was dealing with and the subsequent breakdown she had.
So please - take a stand. Say this is not okay. And reblog the hell out of this, and use any platform you can to talk about how disgusting this is. Make it clear that this is not something you could stand for, and that this is something no society should stand for. Because some people in some societies are, and that is not acceptable.
Stand up for KDP, and stand against her victim-blaming, self-excusing abuser.

Who the hell is Tony Veitch?
Who’s Tony Veitch, and why are you so angry?
In a nutshell: Tony Veitch is a NZ sports commentator who brutally beat his ex-partner, Kristin Dunne-Powell. In 2005 he broke her back in two places and caused severe head injuries, after repeatedly kicking her while she was already immobilized on the floor. He left her lying on the ground overnight while he slept in the bed, and she had to drag herself to the bathroom where she collapsed. He refused to call an ambulance, eventually drove her to a hospital, and left two hours later to go to work.
Since then he’s done all kinds of despicable things, like paying her $100,000 to tell everyone she fell down some stairs, hiring a PR company to launch a smear campaign against her when she went public, and claiming the attack was “provoked”. He pleaded guilty in court, but lied to friends and coworkers, telling them he was applying for a passport, in order to get character references to give to the judge during his trial, which he then changed to make himself look better, and to make them seem relevant to the case.

Like I haven't seen a single serious post accusing Snape of that in my wanderings on the Internet, they're all jokes. Yet people still act like that's the point people want to make. It's so annoying.
Just an FYI, I’m not in the ‘Snape was obsessed with Lily and was friend zoned and only saved the wizarding world because he had a boner for a dead girl’ camp. That’s not canon, it’s extreme and I’m pretty sure most anti-Snape people don’t think that.
I’m in the ‘Snape did a good thing, but was still a bully and relentlessly tormented his students unnecessarily and literally could’ve just been a strict teacher but not an absolute bully and I should not have to forgive him for this because his patronus is a doe ok’ camp. I’m also in the 'I think comparing him to Dudley and Draco is stupid because they are children and are in the process of developing the ability to think for themselves, Snape is a 30+ year old man’ camp.
