Seas discovered with @wylkstone and onward from (x)
An eye raises at the other as he remained rather silent. It wasn't abnormal to see something like this with someone rescued off of the traders ships. Being a former trapper he too himself had done many a bad thing. But children were his limit. He'd never harm or traumatize them. He had his morals. ❝ Aye ... see yer not much fer words. ❞ He respected that.
❝ Right then up ye get. ❞ He motions shuffling Nata on board. Making sure he went first before following behind so he didn't fall overboard in the process. Didn't need to do that yet he hoped. Once the boy was on board the rest of the crew climbed on board with him. Taking their positions as they heaved their anchor and they failed off with the oncoming wind.
Conditions were perfect for today. Not a cloud in sight as the cool wind blew through the sails. Whipping the strays of his hairs as he inhaled deeply. Coming away from the helm of the ship as he pats the small boys shoulders a bit too hard. ❝ Perfect day fer fishin. Chief said ya might not know too much with the conditions ye'd been found in. But you follow ol' Eret and ye'll be just fine. Come on then. ❞ He motions for him to be followed as he heads towards the nets stored about the deck of the ship. Hand the folded ones into the boys hands.
❝ No use fer idle hands with the oncoming rougher seasons Ye be staying ye be working. ❞
❝ Right then lad. Follow my orders we'll be just fine. ❞ Taking a bit of the net in his hands he takes the edge. Taking a step and tossing it over the side of the ship. Letting the line out as he stops it. ❝ Then ye tie it to these knobs and yer set. Think ye can handle that Tactiturn ?❞

"Drop it lass some pasts need ta stay buried." He warns as he moves the items behind a door on the deck. It lead down to his personal quarters after all this was his ship. But he stops in his tracks for a moment hearing about how sailing was boring. What a simple mind set as he grabs a the rope he would need to hoist some of the crates up. Escorting her off and making sure she didn't fall into the water surrounding the island. "Sailin ain't ta borin when ya know what ya doin. Takes real skill to make it not sink in the roughest of storms." He pushed the plank up as he reveals a door under it.
A snort comes from him as he stops what he's doing. Giving her a look as he looks to her arms and then back at her. "'ittle thing like you hefting cargo? Ya ain't look like you've worked a day in your life lass."
"Shouldn't forget yer past, can be a lesson." She blinked as he took the spears, still trying to work out what else they could be for. Maybe fishing or perhaps battle in the chance of enemy ships? When the mention of permission came up, she shrugged. "Oh are ya? I wouldn't know. Not a fan of sailin', can be a bit borin'... just staring at the water all day."
"Fine." She huffed, rolling her eyes as she walked up the ramp, joining Tav who had already moved to solid ground for a nice rest in the sun. She watched her dragon roll in the grass before looking back to Eret. "Ya know I could lend a hand, if you want."

"No they ain't now stop touchin em." She probably didn't know as much as Hiccup did and honestly. It was a tale for him to tell and not to have told by another. "Reason fer a life best been forgotten." He gathers said items and places them away. "Sorry mussa slipped 'is mind seein 'ow busy 'e's been lately. Usually ye ask ta board a man's ship. Any ship curls."
He points motioning her off. "Now go shoo." He wasn't going to be on the ship. He had cargo to unload. He didn't need someone poking their nose in his business where they didn't need to be.
"Huh?" Merida quickly turned her head, her hand retracting after checking the sharpness of some spears leaning against the ship's side. "...I was jus' lookin'! Do ya use these when the ship gets stuck in the ice?" Maybe she should have made more of an effort to explain herself last night when she appeared with Tavish her Hobblegrunt. "I was askin' yer beau about ya and he said to go ask ya myself. So here we are." She flashed a grin. "I'm the troublemaker he talks about, Merida."

"Lemme guess time fer ya to finally leave?" He retorts quite sassily. Honestly it was like every day she was here. "Don't ye 'ave others ta bother lass?" he plays gently still . Knowing it would push her buttons a little more

Oh this was too easy for him. He was sure he was one of the few people alive who could push her little buttons and then be easily forgiven. But he honestly loved the spunk she had. She would have been amazing addition to his crew had it been a different time but he could still instigate her now.
Watching her claw out of the snow he could only grin a bit too smugly.
"Oooooho? Then come at me little britches." Eret knew that would push her buttons a little more than usual. But he would be ready. "Ye'd 'ave ta reach my throat for ye to leave it won't ya?"
THERE'S A FRUSTRATED GROWL that is muffled by the snow. Before long, Mari manages to sit up, now with a blanket's worth of snow coating her belly and sides. Some of it had gotten stuck in her collar, other bits stuffed between the grieves on her knees and the grooves of the pauldrons on her shoulders. By all accounts, she looks absolutely ridiculous.
If her face weren't already red from the cold, then it certainly would be by just how angry she was. Being thrown into water was certainly startling . . . but the snow tended to make her the angry kind of frustrated. The type of angry where she suddenly took all restraints off of her language.
"ERET, YOU FUCKIN' LITTLE SHIT!" He was far from little. That was besides the point. "I'M GONNA KILL YOU! I'M GONNA KICK YOUR ASS SO HARD YOU'LL HAVE A FOOTPRINT IN YOUR THROAT!" She shrieks, stumbling clumsily out of the snowdrift.

The right hand could only laugh as the smaller of the two disappears completely into the snow depth of the pile nearby. He remembered she hated the snow but at least she didn't have to swim in it. He figured throwing her into a snow pile would be at least not as bad as the water he flung her into not that too long prior.
"Ah come now ye can shake it off no problem." He looked overly smug about this. He would not miss the opportunity for such an occasion.
@haseti sent: "Holiday aye?" The sailor grinned as he looks down at Mari. Eret had no issue picking up the little one as he throws her into a nearby snow pile. Dusting his hands as he looked very pleased with himself. ( from haseti)
"ERET, NO. NO!" She knows that mischievous grin from a mile away. The only reason why she hadn't taken off running is because he'd managed to sneak up on her. The rider paled in anticipation, and then switched from remorseful thinking mode to angry felyne mode as she was swiftly plucked from the ground.
"ERET!"
Her hostile demands for release were futile, as were her protesting attempts to wriggle free from his arms. Next thing she knows, she's sailing into a snowdrift with a squawk.
"AUGH!" There's a crunch of snow as she's chucked into the snowdrift. While Eret dusts his hands off with satisfaction, the younger is left to pry herself out from the cold, absolutely fuming.

Eret has a hard time initially settling down on Berk. This is due to the fact he was raised on boats his entire life and only touched land at ports for restocking. Due to this he suffers from land sickness. He needs rest and a lot of it when he gets overcome from dizziness.
He is well cared for by Hiccup when it comes to this. And stays in bed most of the day despite wanting to show the villagers he belongs there. But he will not object when he is told otherwise by Hiccup.

SIBLINGS
Eret is the only boy when it comes to the family he was born into. He has three older sisters and one younger. The three older sisters are his half sisters whereas his younger sister is fully his biological sibling. Eret Sr, was a man known for never staying in one place and often sleeping with whom he pleased in order to get the son he needed to take over the family business. Dragon Trapping. With Eret's birth he had hope he finally found a wife who would give him many sons causing the birth of his younger sister.
When his mother passed his father came to collect the two of them which caused the three older sisters to dote utterly on them both.
When his father passed Eret rose to take charge of the ship and its crew giving his sisters the options to do what they wished with their lives. He made sure each of his sisters were married to whom they wished with a good dowery and routes of trade to bring into their marriages. His younger sister stayed with him and his crew , learning their family business and staying with Eret when he eventually settles down onto Berk. She will occasionally visit but built her own ship to travel the seas and see what is out there for herself rather than staying in one place.
Eret's sisters all come to Berk when they please and help establish better trade routes for the vikings. Often teasing their brother about his new settled life and to dote on Eret's children. They are very fond of Hiccup and the dragons on the Isle of Berk.
The sisters from oldest to youngest are named ; Káre , Biret , Áile , Rávdná

Eret is very aware he's considered a pretty man. He knows his charm and looks can get him out of anything but it also gets him into a lot of trouble too.

Sometimes i think about how Eret even tho prideful of his trapping years after a while he did want out. But he had a daughter to keep safe and think about and then Drago branded him like property. So he didn't see an easy way to leave that life. He also had his crew who relied on him to keep them safe from Drago's wrath.
What I'm getting at is Eret's a great complicated character than just the man with a pretty face and I hope I can write out more about whats happened to him through the years.

"Aye lass ye need ta know the chiefin thing is something ye should talk ta Hiccup 'bout. Knows more 'bout it than I ever do." She did not fight him on being affectionate or physical with her. So perhaps he could be grateful for that. There were many thing about Hiccup becoming the chief he didn't know about. He was much for understanding royal stuff even. Because in ever sense both Mari and Hiccup were royalty. In their own right.
But he had come to know one thing. "Yer future ain't set in stone lass. Ye seen ta be fortunate yer chief ain't pushin ya to take over yet. Seems decent enough ta keep doing as he 'as." Hiccup didn't want to be the chief. Gods he was there after his mourning period. He looked wretched. But he took it in stride knowing that there would be no way forward unless he had taken that place in rather than anyone else.
"Do ye think yer chief be less disappointed if ye went ta 'im and told 'im ye didn't want to lead?"
"RIGHT . . ." SHE REMEMBERED HER FIRST ENCOUNTER with Skullcrusher. Eret had mentioned then, that the former chief had been that dragon's rider, and Mari could still feel the potent grief coming from him then. HIccup hadn't had the mercy of being sworn in when he was ready—something that Mari realized she might've taken for granted. Years after the deaths of her own family, she had the fortune of being looked over by Chief Gara, who would likely continue to watch over Mahana well after she herself was gone.
She smiles a bit as she's pulled into a slight hug. still staring thoughtfully at her knees, allowing the gesture. At this point, she hardly minded such a thing. Maybe there was pride that swelled in that little chest of hers, in knowing she could consider Eret and his partner family. The strength of the heart and its pull gets Mari thinking.
"Well, I guess so. The truth is, I thought I knew what I wanted for as long as I could remember. I was always told I was going to be a rider, and lead like my grandfather did. And I went with it. For years, that's all I thought I was gonna be."
"I guess in hindsight, I did always wonder what was beyond the island. Just . . . I didn't get to really experience it until I had to leave. Like really experience that want to travel. Sure it was scary being somewhere unfamiliar at first, but in time I came to like it. I came to love flying most of all."
". . . And now everyone believes that Red's supposed to protect the island someday, like the old Island Guardian. But I don't know what that's gonna mean for him, or for me. I'm kinda scared I won't get to leave home anymore."

There were times that Eret forgot just how similar both Mari and Hiccup were to one another. Both longing to get out of their eventual futures. Now he wasn't as knowledgeable as he should be when it came to Hiccup prior to him becoming the chief. Their interactions were brief but he knew the good heart the man carried with him when it came down to it. A heart similar to Mari's. "Lass I ain't ta privy ta the chief 'fore he was...ya know the chief." He was still learning much about his own husband even though they were officially married to one another. And honestly he rather liked learning as they went along with it.
"'e didn't do ta well. Lost his old man...didn't see 'im fer nearly two weeks. Only maybe a few 'ours fer 'is funeral." He had never seen such grief upon a persons face before. Not like that. He hadn't washed since the battle with Drago. Details of it he would spare the teen.
There was never moments he was as affectionate with other people besides his own family and Hiccup. But Mari was family at this point. Unfurling his arm he pulls her closer. Allowing her to lean and use him as she needed for comfort. "Still think 'e ain't too keen 'bout being chief. See 'im looking to the horizons like a sailor lusts fer the open seas. 'is heart will always be pulled ta the skies but 'e also don't wanna disappoint folks." Amber colored eyes look down at the teen he pulled closer to his side.
"Same as you's I suppose eh?"
@haseti sent: ❛ The problem’s not the distance; it’s what lies in between. ❜ (haseti for some and eret and Mari time)
AND YET, SHE FEELS SHE SHOULD KNOW THAT BETTER THAN ANYONE. The journey and not the destination, so to speak. It wasn't coming to the end that was the hardest step, it was just simply getting there. "Yeah . . . yeah, I know . . . a lot about that." She shrugs awkwardly, breaking eye contact and opting to stare at the horizon instead. "The obstacle, literally and figuratively. The hard part is getting past it." "Well, I've already been at my wit's end preventing certain chaos. One life-altering journey's enough for me. S' part of the reason why I left for Berk in the first place. It was so I could just get out there, and be free for a moment. I don't know how many years I have left before I have to take root in this place."
" . . . How did Hiccup adapt to being Chief?" After a pause, she turns to the older, elbows propped on her knees. "Just . . . y'know. I'm not exactly looking forward to my responsibilities . . ."

How alike both she and Hiccup were. The mention of a treat before a nice ride out and both riders were putty to the creatures they held so dear to their hearts. He leans carefully against one of the barrels outside of the stable as he looked. He could sense the unease with some of them around him and he wasn't going to risk it. Like they knew what he was at one point but with the rathalos he knew the creature knew him. Despite his antics to his bonded one he knew he was doing it out of a place of care rather than malice.
"Can keep me balance just fine lass. Ya don't 'ave to worry bout ol Eret fer that." He tells her gently. He carefully shifts from his leaned positions to meet the rathalos half way. Extending his hand to him. "So long as 'e dun mind the added weight I'll be more than fine ta go."
THE SPOON STILL IN HER MOUTH, Mari smiles a bit and rolls her eyes while she has her back turned. It's all in good jest, and she knows that Eret took pleasure in toying with her. Despite their frequent antics, none of them were performed out of actual malice. "Mm." Thoughtfully, she hastily brings another spoonful into her mouth before setting the dessert aside.
She could feel Ratha's gaze burning into her, looking expectant. "Gee, thanks for throwing me under the wagon." She jokes back to Eret. If her rathalos hadn't had his attention fixed on her before, then he certainly did now. as if he understood every single word that had been spoken.
"If you're gonna go with me, then you'll need to borrow a monstie. We've got some friendly ones that make good travel mounts in case of emergency. Unless you think you can keep your balance on Red—OOPH!"
Just as she says that, she feels a shove from behind, as Ratha prods his snout into her back. Only with her did he have the guts to do this. He even seems to rumble and gape his mouth slightly in amusement.
"Okay! You get a bit of jerky, but we're not spoiling your dinner." Mari turns after she catches herself and fishes a treat from the pouch on her hip.

"Oh 'ave I now?" He chuckles as he watches her pout at him. Taking the peace offering from him as she continued to saddle up her team. So to speak. "dun 'orry bout it lass 'aven't poisoned it." He jokes lightly as Ratha turned his attention on him. Perhaps looking to see if he too was receiving a treat in kind like his rider.
"Sorry beastie can't give ye anythin' surely yer rider be more than able ta give ya something 'fore we go eh?" How strange it was to think it been only a year since he integrated into the tribe on Berk. A year he'd been trapping creatures like Ratha and Toothless alike.
A year could change a person for the better it seemed.
BESIDES BEING FORCED TO GET A CHANGE OF CLOTHES, Mari's day went relatively well between then and now. She browsed the market for groceries, and had treated herself to a small charm armlet that she could wear when she was feeling particularly nice. Now the day was steadily drawing a close, and the sky had turned from its cheerful blue to its soft, drowsy pinks and oranges as the sun neared the horizon.
Dressed back into her proper gear and armor, Mari had gone to the stables—feeling her Rathalos's itchy urge to fly. Even on a day away from fieldwork, Mari didn't restrict herself within the village walls. She wanted to feel the wind on her face. She wanted to feel her heart race; the things she felt together and blissfully when she went took Ratha flying.
She gives the girth of Ratha's saddle an experimental tug to make sure it was snug without it being too tight. Mari smiles and stands up with satisfaction when she hears Eret's voice.
Immediately, the rider frowns. She knows Eret well enough to know that the treat given to her was a peace offering. She wanted to be proud and deny the gift, but it looked good, and she should probably eat something before she left . . .
Deep down, Mari trusted him. Perhaps that's why she cast a dry frown and took the dessert without much qualm. "You're lucky I was already heading out . . ." She murmurs as she turns away from Eret and takes a spoonful into her mouth.
