The People of HashtagNYU
Over our six-year run, we believed, among many things, that our team succeeded and failed together. We chose to never sign posts as individuals, instead taking collective ownership of our content. For our last post, we’re flipping the script.
In saying goodbye, we want to highlight the voices and experiences of the people who made HashtagNYU possible. These were the students who wrote tweets, snapped photos, shot videos, wrote posts, and so much more. We were the people behind the screen hoping to inform and delight you with each and every post.
To capture the experience, we asked our near-hundred alumni one simple question:
In 140 characters or less, what was HashtagNYU for you?

A Handy Guide to NYU’s Building Codes
Ever downloaded your semester schedule on your phone, then stared at in confusion for minutes? We’ve been there. Albert building codes can be quite a tricky business — which is why we’ve got you covered with these handy downloadable building code cards. NYU has a lot of classrooms locations, so we’ve narrowed down to some of the largest, most frequented, or somewhat tricky buildings!
Tumblr media
It’s super simple! Each code card contains:
An image of the building, so you never have to check Google Earth
The building code from Albert and its corresponding name
The address, in case you need to map it
A list of its amenities (simply refer to the key!)
Download them here, and never be late to another class again!

Books by NYU Alumni
Haven’t read a book for fun since high school? Can’t retain articles from your class? Use to love reading but then life got in the way? Here are some new NYU alumni books that may just bring back your love for reading.
The Amateurs by Sara Shepard
Tumblr media
Know Pretty Little Liars? Well, NYU’s very own Sara Shepard created it, and she’s back with another hit! The Amateurs is a mystery thriller series about the disappearance of teenager Helena Kelly, which has left her family with no answers and no leads. If you love Buzzfeed Unsolved or Martinis and Murder, you’re in for a treat.
Marlena by Julie Buntin
Tumblr media
Written by NYU alum Julie Buntin, Marlena is named a best book of 2017 by NPR, Publishers Weekly, Buzzfeed, Vogue, Esquire, and more! The novel tells a tale of love, addiction, and loss. Buntin describes it as “the story of two girls and the feral year that will cost one her life, and define the other’s for decades.” Cozy up and get ready for a long ride.
Surrender, New York by Caleb Carr
Tumblr media
Another literary thriller, New York Times bestselling author and NYU alum Caleb Carr brings us Surrender, New York. Carr has previously brought us The Alienist in 1994, which has since become an American TV period drama. Surrender, New York is about a criminal psychologist and trade evidence expert become invested in a case of deaths and “throwaway children.” If grisly murder novels and psychological thrillers interest you, this is the book for you.
Spaceman of Bohemia by  Jaroslav Kalfar
Tumblr media
NYU alum Jaroslav Kalfar’s Spaceman of Bohemia is a science fiction fantasy novel about Jakub Prochazka, Czech’s first astronaut. In an attempt to atone for his father’s sins as a Communist informer, he abandons his wife and travels to Venus. In space, he encounters the dangerous and the fantastic, such as a giant alien spider who becomes his companion. Interested to find out what happens in the great beyond?
The Half-Drowned King by Linnea Hartsuyker
Tumblr media
Neither science fiction or fantasy, The Half-Drowned King is a historical fiction novel written by NYU alum Linnea Hartsuyker. Based on the true story of Ragnvald of Maer, the right-hand man of the first king of Norway, and his sister Svanhild, the story chronicles the birth of a Viking kingdom with some serious Game of Thrones and Outlander vibes. It’s exciting, beautiful, and just plain mystical. Get a blanket and a cup of hot cocoa, because this will be a good one.
Stephen Florida by Gabe Habash
Tumblr media
Wrestling is the name of the game. Stephen Florida, the title character of NYU alum Gabe Habash’s debut novel, is “one of the most unforgettable characters in recent American fiction” (NPR). Florida is not just a college wrestler — he’s brash, audacious, charismatic, yet problematic. If you want a sports novel with a kick, this is the book to read.
There Are More Beautiful Things Than Beyonce by Morgan Parker
Tumblr media
There Are More Beautiful Things Than Beyonce by NYU alum Morgan Parker is a collection of poems about identity. Morgan Parker goes into the nitty-gritty of what it means to be a black woman in contemporary American culture. Accolades include Time Magazine Best Paperback of 2017, NPR.org’s Poetry to Pay Attention To, and A Publishers Weekly Pick of the Week. If you’re down for some powerful words, this book will surely feed your appetite.

What’s In Your Backpack?
There’s a lot of hustle and bustle in NYC. Looking back on your first day at NYU, you remember the scramble to gather all your supplies for classes. Now that it’s nearing the end of the year, you’ve found the perfect packing method. Here are some of the inner workings of real NYU students!
Tumblr media
The City Girl. New York City — full of chances, opportunities, and hope. You’re always on the run to see new people and new things, all while looking très chic.
Pouches, pouches, and pouches. What’s in them? Just everything!
Sunglasses are a great way to hide your face from the paparazzi. Or that Welcome Week hookup that didn’t work out so well.
A packed lunch saves money and tastes great. Cheers to that meal prep!
Tumblr media
The Modern Engineer. STEM is life, but you don’t let stereotypes define you.  Taking classes like Operating Systems and Aerodynamics doesn’t contradict your wide range of sensibilities.
Tea can really give you a pick up when you’re having a tough day.
A hybrid tablet and stylus, so you can draw all those math equations when regular keyboards fail you.
Eyedrops for those late nights doing lab homework when your eyes just aren’t having it.
An I <3 Consent pin, because sexual respect is what’s up.
Tumblr media
The Mom Friend.  Life and the City can throw obstacles your way, so you’re always prepared. In short, you’re a purposeful hoarder — you probably won’t need everything you’re carrying, but who knows when an emergency will strike?
Extra chopsticks or utensils are great when you forget to grab some from the dining hall.
A hard drive can keep projects safe and compact, away from the horrors of computer failure.
Tylenol or Advil, because you never know who’s going to be sick!
Deodorant is definitely needed when you’re running from Trader Joe’s to class.
Tumblr media
Bohemian Vibes. Love, peace, and chill. It’s a big world out there — no need to hurry.
A Good Book empowers you to learn new things. And with great power comes great responsibility.
Girl Scout Cookies feed the body and soul. 💖
A Wallet keeps everything clean and compact. No need to weigh yourself down with loads of stuff!

HashtagNYU was started six years ago to improve the way we communicate with students, to delight you and build a shared sense of community, and to share the NYU story, one photo, tweet, and video at a time. We had some Real Talk, we met incoming first-years through One Word. One World., we built Momentum, we started critical conversations on campus around Consent, and we shared a lot of GIFs.
It’s been an incredible ride, and we’d like to announce that we’ll be graduating from the social media game alongside the Class of 2018. Though our content will live on, our team is focusing on awesome new projects in our mission to improve the NYU student experience. Like countless seniors before us, we’re filled with wonderful memories as well as lots of feelings. We’re so grateful to have taken this journey with all of you, and so excited for the work ahead of us — stay tuned in the coming weeks as we unveil our ~final thesis~, for starters!
You know we love to hear from you, so don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or comments! We’ll see you at Yankee Stadium as we celebrate our graduation together and cheer for new beginnings. 💜 #ForeverViolet

What Makes You Scream at NYU?
We’ve all had moments during our time here at NYU that made us want to scream. Be it good or bad, it’s certainly — one way to express how we’re feeling — but there’s no shame because we’ve all been there! That’s why we are taking the time today to recognize some iconic NYU-screaming moments.
When your acceptance letter for NYU comes in
Tumblr media
We love to reminisce about that moment.
When you get your NYU tuition refund
Tumblr media
We all feel a type of way when that bursar balance is positive.
When the NYU Bus is stuck in traffic
Tumblr media
Thought you’d get to class on time? That’s cute.
When someone grabs your Tapingo
Tumblr media
We just want to stay awake for the class we’re already late for. Is that so much to ask for?
When you’re put onto the waitlist for a class
Tumblr media
It’s always the Hunger Games out here when registration begins.
When your res hall’s laundry room washers are full
Tumblr media
Apparently we aren’t the only ones who thought doing laundry at 1AM on a Monday was a good idea.
When midterms season is over
Tumblr media
Because honestly, exams are just a rough time.
When you find your sugar freshmen with them meal swipes
Tumblr media
If it’s free, it’s for me!
When the elevators turn into an MTA subway during rush hour
Tumblr media
Because how disrespectful it is for everyone else to have classes at the exact same time we are!
When the NYU Bookstore has a sale on sweaters
Tumblr media
New York ain’t warm, and NYU sweaters ain’t cheap, so if the Bookstore is having a sale, then it’s truly meant to be!
So there you have it, some key moments of our NYU journey that make us want to SCREAM. And whether you have been there or not, you’re bound to experience all these big moods eventually. But we just want to know, what else here at NYU makes you scream?
