Why am I posting this?

Because I know I have a lot of young people following me, and because over the past few years, I've seen a shocking amount of anti-gay rhetoric in MY comment section. Of my Steven Universe fancomic. An extremely lgbtq-friendly show.

So what gives? My best guess is, I have a very wide following, and a lot of these readers are pretty socially insulated in conservative spaces that don't allow them to explore the concepts of the other side of the argument.

I'm not about to judge children on the environment they were raised in... but I'm also here. I'm a part of the environment. And I'd like to offer some perspectives.

for those looking to participate in their local communities but unsure how or where to start, I highly recommend starting with your local library. yes I am a certified library stan and library lover but your local library likely has a lot of programming and events that are a good opportunity to meet other people! my small town library has crafting events, teen book clubs, author visits, workshops, birdwatching workshops, gardening workshops, foraging workshops, and more! many of them are even virtual! it's a great reason to get out of the house, too. i guarantee people will be glad you're there. go to local school events, a lot of them have fundraising events and function as a sort of community center. find your closest food not bombs chapter, go to local music events (yes- even your small town has a diy scene!), follow businesses in your community on instagram (especially book stores or cafes), find local artists/makers and follow them (go to events they post about!), pick a few spots to be a "regular" at and start a good rapport with the employees and other regulars! download bumble friends and start meeting people who value what you value and form genuine relationships with them. be open to people outside of your age demographic! there ARE in fact older people who you have a lot in common with, younger people too. you're not alone!! try not to be too judgmental. we are all just people looking for connections.

every so often the discourse comes around again that basically boils down to “is it feminist for a woman to want men to be attracted to her” and it’s like. no, it’s not. it’s also not anti feminist. it’s not relevant. it’s nothing. a woman wanting to have sex with men has nothing to do with feminism. being a lesbian or celibate is not “more feminist” than being a straight woman. the point was always “women should not have to dress in a way that is attractive to men solely in order to be acknowledged by them at all” not “women should never dress in a way that is attractive to men for any reason.” sometimes a woman wants men to want to have sex with her. that’s not anti feminist. that’s average. it’s also not feminist just because it’s her choice to do it. it is not related. feminism is about women’s human rights. that doesn’t mean it’s a feminist act every time a woman makes a choice.

lesbians whose long distance stops them from spending time with their partners

lesbians who suffer daily discrimination

lesbians who need to hide their identity from their own parents and other family members

non-white lesbians

transgender and non-binary lesbians

lesbians who fight tooth and nail for their local queer/lesbian community

lesbians who struggle with loneliness and isolation

lesbians who struggle with compulsory heterosexuality

lesbians who refuse to give up

lesbians that are looking up our history

older lesbians who stand up, welcome and defend the babies

lesbians that feel desperation because of the current political situation

lesbians who live in countries in which queer rights are in danger

refugee and immigrant lesbians

and to every other lesbian that isn't able to see a way out of the mess that our lives is in at the moment: we are here and we'll stay united. we have always existed and so will go on.
