Trying out this social media thing... and Inktober 2019! Not so good with the drawing routine, so switched to more general microblogging in 2020... But for 2021 I'm trying out selling designs on stuff through RedBubble (as hatchlingsCache)! So hopefully more artsy or craftsy posts to come...

I have started taking the digital artwork I made in a summer workshop and putting it up on Redbubble--you can see it as patterns/designs on things you can buy or just as regular artwork.  (I was sad that Redbubble has a character limit for usernames which makes using my same handle as on Tumblr impossible...)  Check it out if you like surreal or abstract stuff:  https://www.redbubble.com/people/hatchlingsCache/shop?asc=u
I’m trying to add one new piece a week, roughly.

My indoor "jungle" has continued to struggle on certain fronts as previously outdoor plants do not have helpful insects to eat the bad bugs sucking their leaves dry... BUT, 2 of the Kent mango seeds sprouted and are looking perky. I have at least a few years before I need to worry about where to put a tree... And longer to know if this child got any good genes for making sweet, tender fruit. I love the peach flavor notes the Kent mango has along with being less "stringy." This seedling is not a clone of its parent, so I might not get a fruit I like at all... Oh well.

While the corn didn't pan out at all, my female artic kiwi vine only panned out 90%. Got fruit- huzzah! Had to pick it after 2.5 months though and it still wasn't fully ripe- booooo! Or, it's my luck and the fruit was just bitter. I'm hoping it's a matter of waiting longer next fall...

Alas, after almost 4 months, only one ear of corn developed, sort of. Inside you can see a few kernels grew after successful fertilization. However, ants appear to be enjoying the fruit of my labor more than me... Oh well, I'll try again in a couple years; next summer I'll go back to bell peppers maybe since those worked well 2 years ago.

At least one silk (female flower) is successfully growing a corn cob- I made sure to blow some pollen onto it. The 2 newer silks have me worried though because the tassels on my plants are all old now. I don't think there's pollen left! The tassels and silks were so out of sync...

The corn is blooming at last! At least the male flowers so far. Now to wait to see if this little tango happens in sync. I won't have any kernels on the cob if the female flowers aren't pollinated correctly...

In the tiny, indoor pot that I'm growing a strawberry plant (before moving it outdoors), a bunch of other things have popped up. Including the tiniest flower I've ever come across in-person! I think only a gnat would be small enough to land on this 3mm wide flower... (My thumbnail as a bad reference for size.)

The blue corn is doing well despite the squirrels! Corn, being a grass, has shallow roots, so I only lost one seedling to the squirrels digging in the pot's dirt in the beginning. My solution that has worked best for me and the corn to deter squirrels is staking netting over the dirt around the stalks. Plants don't have to grow through holes, and I can still weed!
Now to wait for flowering...

About a month ago I planted some Dwarf Blue Corn seeds, and have had some seedlings emerge. The old grill grate is one of my experiments to keep squirrels from digging in my pots and killing my plants. It's a temporary solution as I don't want to strangle the corn as it gets bigger. I picked this species of corn because they're shorter and supposedly work in confinement of large pots. We'll see in 2 more months if there's corn to bring into the kitchen!

I'm trying to use a different color pen for each prompt, but the library scanner isn't digitizing some very well... Sorry if it's hard on the eyes!
