Writing Pace

I have a lot planned this year in my personal life, so I have decided to be modest in my writing goals.

Fifty poems in a year works out to a poem a week. On the outside looking in that appears insignificant. However, I have spent so many years not finishing projects that I knew I needed to reconsider the way I approached this problem.

But I am working on other projects unofficially. There too I am being modest in my unofficial goals. Right now, if I finish 250 words of fiction a day I am thrilled. It is better to have a consistent growth in word count then to wallow in a productivity dream.

WIPs

I probably have other a hundred poems as rough drafts I could revise for my chapbook this year, so I am going through those to find gems in addition to writing new poetry. My goal is to write or revise at least one poem a week.

However, I have been tentatively exploring other writing projects unofficially from my fifty poem goal this year. I have outlined the first book to a Pride and Prejudice adaptation that takes place in coal country. Kind of a silly idea, but I like it.

I decided to style the series a bit like George R. R. Martin of A Song of Ice and Fire. Each person who has a romantic storyline will have a POV chapter. I imagine around February or March I will have written at least three chapters, so I will decide then if I will continue it.

On one hand, I really want to write fiction, but I seem better suited to poetry. It feels like I am kicking and screaming my way to other genres.

2019 Goals

This year, my big writing goal is to compile at least fifty poems into a chapbook. I have felt my poetry really coalescing around similar themes, and I think it is time to see what I can make of that inspiration.
