its nuts how ive gotten so deep into my pokemon hyperfixation but basically solely for the characters. i do love the pokemon themselves but like all my focus has been on the characters lmao. it kinda reflects in my works too cause. Oops All Characters!

What do you think the elite four actually do? Canon doesn’t really give us anything to work with. Are they like Right hand people of the champions or like the champions guard team?

Hi there @ladyseychelles! That's a good and tough question honestly! The only thing we know for sure about the Elite Four is that they are supposed to function as final barriers before the champion. But outside of that, it's not nearly as clear. If we look to Pokespe we do see that the Elite Four can function as right-hand people to the champions as we see both the Hoenn and Unova Elite four stepping into the action in the manga. But in the games and the anime, the Elite Four are known for not being all that helpful when it comes to regional crises. I could see them being the champion's guards (even though technically the champion is stronger than all of them but even strong people need protection). As far as I know (and someone who has better knowledge of Pokespe might be able to fill this in) there's not been an instance where the Champions themselves have needed protection. It would definitely make for an interesting game plot in the future. I would love it if Gen 9 did bring back the Elite 4 to expand on their purpose if there is one beyond being final obstacles.

Having read all the Pokespe arcs in a region with an elite four other than Alola, (which is kinda different given how most of theirs were characters earlier on anyways), I can indeed report that we have yet to see the Elite Four step in to help defend the champion, with the debatable exception of the Johto Elite Four. The Johto elite four/champion, very old spoiler warning, were the villains and basically trying to wipe out humanity, so I don’t know if that counts. They more or less did the classic “right-hands to the villain fight the heroes to stall for time as they set off their evil plan”. (Though admittedly I haven’t read the Yellow arc in a very long time, and don’t remember just how deliberate this was, versus them all just hanging around their base and running into the heroes breaking in.)

On the contrary, in Kalos, (again, old spoilers), we see Malva actively fight Diantha more than once. (And while the others do help in the fight against Flare too, they never specifically defend Diantha themselves.)

Hoenn has the elite four help, like you said, but also establishes that they’re free to wander and do as they like when the league isn’t going on. It actually took them until like halfway into the drama to show up because Steven had to call them all back from wherever the hell they were.

Based on Hoenn, I’d just guess that they’re expert members of a sport team, just not the MVPs, and, because of that, they don’t have to worry about having the level of responsibility a champion has. They just have to worry about showing up to the league when it’s held.

Leon has a plan to surprise his little brother for Christmas, but he’ll need a little help from Sonia first.

“Thanks for helping me out with this, Sonia,” Leon says, pushing open the door to the boutique. “I owe you one.”

“Send me something nice for Christmas and we’ll call it even,” Sonia says, breezing past him.

Leon snorts. “Deal!”

Sonia walks purposefully towards the back of the store, and Leon follows closely behind her. With all the mazelike rows of merchandise scattered about, he’ll get lost in an instant if he loses sight of her. She finally stops in the far back corner, where the walls are lined with suit jackets and the tables are covered in collared shirts.

“First off,” she says, clapping her hands together, “do you have any idea what you’re looking for?”

“Yeah,” Leon says, eyeing the racks warily, “and it’s not anything like this.”

“I thought you said you wanted to buy a nice outfit to wear for Christmas!”

“I did, but I didn’t mean a suit!” he says, wrinkling his nose. He’s managed to go four years as Champion without having to wear anything on special occasions as stifling and formal as a suit, and he’s not going to break that streak now. “I need something more…Santa-like.”
