Very interested in your beefleaf beef ;-P Agreed with them often being reduced to starcrossed lovers or something tawdry. But they had been (best) friends for centuries, or so SHX thought. I'm not saying they should become lovers after the murders. There IS still a lingering affection? between them I think.
There definitely was enough of Something lingering for He Xuan to let Shi Qingxuan live after everything, and Shi Qingxuan did see "Ming Yi" as their best friend, but given everything else about them, the popularity of the ship boggles me.
Honestly, I probably wouldn't have such beef with the ship if it wasn't treated as a given. Fans often put them on the same level as Xiyao (which is a reading of MDZS that Makes Sense to me) or even Moshang (literally canon). Interacting with the fandom just a little bit before reading the book had me expecting something vastly different from what was actually there. And what's actually there is so interesting!
The Black Water arc is a story of betrayal that invites you to sympathize with both the betrayed and the betrayer. It's about He Xuan's revenge that doesn't satisfy. It's about Shi Qingxuan's entire world collapsing under the weight of the truth. It's about Shi Wudu telling the whole universe to fuck itself if it dares to harm his sibling.
I imagine that if I hadn't built up a grudge against the ship, I would put it in the "it needs to be fucked up and messy" category alongside Xuexiao and Nieyao. There is potential for really nasty dramatic stuff about falling in love with a lie, or losing your chance with someone you had come to love due to something completely unforgivable, but that's just. Not what I've seen.

I read Dracula before watching any movie adaptations, and still haven't watched any movie adaptations, because I know that a Thing they do is make Mina a love interest for Dracula.
That guy murdered your best friend and tried to murder your beloved devoted husband! You're better than this! And to the screenwriters! The OG Mina is so cool as a critical member of the anti-Dracula squad! Why would you water her down, deny her suffering, and basically strip away everything I love about her!?
I have a similar reaction to beefleaf.
Have you read tgcf? If so, what are your thoughts on beefleaf? You seem like someone I could commiserate with over the fandom treatment of them
I have indeed read TGCF! Although, I have to confess that SQX and HX weren’t in the upper tier of characters I was interested in. That said, I have definitely noticed that, from what I have seen of TGCF fandom (which I mostly engage with for the art), the way fandom treats and ships them is very far away from how I would characterize both their individual characters and their relationship in the source material.

Hi, it's me, I'm the anon 🙋
Completely understandable response, I just wanted to vent with someone a little, because I am VERY interested in every major character of that arc (Shi Qingxuan, Shi Wudu, AND He Xuan), and I feel like the fanon treatment is not only inaccurate, but a disservice to every one of them.

Special challenges:
Luo Bingge: Xin Mo can’t take him back, and he’ll still need to dual cultivate to avoid qi deviations. Assume that all adults in this world would be able to dual cultivate safely with him.
Liu Qingge: he comes through before his fatal qi deviation. You’ll need to find out what caused it and address it, or he could die/kill you.
Zhuzhi Lang: he will experience a heat cycle and need to lay eggs a few times a year.
Mobei Jun: You need to keep him cool enough to not overheat and die.
All of their powers remain intact, aside from Xin Mo’s ability to travel across realities.

I'm not deep enough in the trenches these days to write it myself, but I want to see a post-canon fic that deals with the Moling Su sect. No one wants them to stay around, but Su Minshan's disciples aren't going down without a fight.

1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 9, 12, 15, 18, 20, 22, and 26 for my wife Wen Qing!
1. Why do you like or dislike this character?
why wouldn't i adore a hot, smart, funny and kind medical genius woman? she appears so little in the book, but is blazing like the sun in every scene she's in. i'm in love
2. Favorite canon thing about this character?
that she did, in fact, help stop the wen clan's atrocities. that if her using her position to sway her homicidal nutjob uncle in the right direction whenever she could wasn't enough to earn her some recognition, sheltering and healing an escaped sect heir and his genius first disciple should have. that was the first fallen domino in the chain that toppled qishan wen, that was active treason, not being passively complicit.
4. If you could put this character in any other media, be it a book, a movie, anything, what would you put them in?
i haven't watched enough stuff lately to give a smart, nuanced answer :( i'm putting her in apothecary diaries. she should hang out with maomao.
7. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you like?
she certainly deserves all the love and worship she gets! her death was a tragedy, so every wen qing lives au, or a fic where her memory & legacy is kept alive by her loved ones, is something that makes me happy!
8. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you despise?
idk if i despise anything, but the biggest injustice is probably how rarely she's depicted with darker skin, even though she's the only character who is canonically described with it.
9. Could you be roommates with this character?
she can throw all my things on the ground and i would apologize for putting them in her way. if she left dirty dishes in the sink again, that's because she was busy with matters too complicated for my simpleton mind. if she yells at me, i will cry because i deserved it. (tbh we're probably chill).
12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?
she's 3 apples tall but her presence instantly fills any room she enters (her 6ft tall little brother is anxiously hiding behind her).
15. What's your favorite ship for this character? (Doesn't matter if it's canon or not.)
jiang cheng/wen qing is the best thing the untamed gave us, i think. other people have said it better than me, but they could have been unstoppable together in another universe - but in this one, their extremely similar values put them on the opposite sides and doom them. the unethical surgery is a cherry on top. tragic (and hot).
18. How about a relationship they have in canon with another character that you admire?
as much as i adore her relationship with wen ning, the one i admire the most is the one she has with wei wuxian. two people from the opposite sides of the war, who found a common goal, stuck to their principles, and remained loyal to each other until the end.
20. Which other character is the ideal best friend for this character, the amount of screentime they share doesn't matter?
...and that's wei wuxian again. i'm sorry, but the second you put them in the same room, they immediately click together! they're similar in so many ways - brilliant, dedicated, sometimes unhinged, loving and protective - and different in ways that complement each other. wen qing is serious enough to keep wei wuxian in check and emotionally mature enough to teach him how to be sincere - and wei wuxian is someone who can help her do the impossible and shoulder some of the responsibility she's carrying. mad genius duo we all deserve <3
22. If you're a fic reader, what's something you like in fics when it comes to this character? Something you don't like?
i like when we get to see her as her own person, not just someone's big sister - though i am weak for her shenanigans with two disaster didis. i don't like when a modern au doesn't kill off the wens, but still needs to make a-yuan wangxian's son, so wen qing gives him away because "she's busy" or another bullshit excuse.
26. What's something the character has done you can't get over? Be it something funny, bad, good, serious, whatever?
she really did perform an experimental surgery with a 50% failure rate without anesthesia on two freshly traumatized teenagers, permanently crippling one of them and lying to another one about it, huh. i wish we had more insight into what her motivation was and how did wei wuxian convince her. as it is, it sometimes feels like mxtx wrote the golden core ouroboros first, and added a "doctor" character second, without really exploring how fucked up that was from her side. all the blame is getting thrown between wei wuxian (for requesting it), jiang cheng (for recieving it) and wen ning (for revealing it), but what about the person who actually did it?

德化白瓷 Déhuà báicí/dehua white porcelain
Dehua County, located in Quanzhou, Fujian, China, is renowned for its white porcelain.
Its kilns flourished during the Tang (618-907 CE) and Song dynasties(960–1279 CE), peaked in the Yuan and Ming periods, and remain famous today, particularly for their white porcelain. Fired at high temperatures, the unglazed porcelain exhibits a smooth, jade-like texture, appearing crystal-clear and pure white.
Dehua white porcelain is renowned for its "high-toughness thin-bodied高韧薄胎瓷衣" technique, a breakthrough in ceramic craftsmanship that achieves exceptional strength in ultra-thin structures. This technology enables the creation of porcelain pieces with egg-shell thinness (0.2–0.5 mm) while maintaining remarkable durability, making it a hallmark of Dehua's artistry. However, not every piece of Dehua white porcelain employs this technique, as it involves significantly higher production costs.

I don't see this often, but before hating too hard on Qiu Haitang, please remember that Qiu Haitang was a spoiled silly girl who naively believed her family had rescued a slave and lifted him so high she would be allowed to marry him.
She genuinely loved Shen Jiu with her whole heart, and he murdered her entire household and left her with nothing but scorched ashes, not even a roof over her head. She didn't know why. All she knew was that the person she loved tore her life to shreds. Of course she had a right to seek justice.
Finding out that Shen Jiu had been hurt by her family destroyed her.

At Guanyin Temple, Jin Guangyao has the opportunity to bring one of his siblings back from the dead. Bringing them back to life will have no negative consequences regarding their body, cultivation, or chance of being reincarnated.
Note: bringing Mo Xuanyu back will kill Wei Wuxian, as only one soul can inhabit a body at any point in time.
