queer history in The Secrets of Dumbledore

the café where Albus and Gellert meet is in Piccadilly Circus; Piccadilly became famous enough as a place where queer people (usually gay men) went looking for casual sex that “dilly boy”, short for “Picadilly boy”, became slang for “male sex worker” in Polari, a dialect of English with deep ties to the gay subculture (it’s where “butch” and “fruit/fruity” come from)

Lally’s style of speech is lifted from Oscar Wilde, with her character also influenced by James Baldwin - Wilde is of course well-known, but Baldwin was a talented gay and Black writer whose use as inspiration signals a lot about how Lally is meant to be perceived

much ado has been made about Gellert’s lavender tie, and the lavender in bloom outside Hogwarts, but just for the sake of inclusion: lavender and violets were historically a covert signal/slang term for homosexuality and claimed by both gay men and lesbians

Vinda’s black suit and more masc-of-center costuming might potentially be calling back to the tradition of lesbians wearing tuxedos (as seen in photographs taken in the famous Parisian lesbian bar Le Monocle) but regardless of whether or not this is direct inspiration, she’s definitely signaling she’s not cishet in period-appropriate ways

a major portion of the film takes place in Weimar-era Berlin, which was well-known as a queer haven with a thriving community in the interwar period - if you’ve seen Cabaret, or you’re aware of the works of Christopher Isherwood (or you’ve seen the BBC adaptation of Christopher and his Kind) you’ll begin to get an idea of what it was like

I’m so tired of seeing people depicting Baphomet with stereotypically masculine characteristics only, erasing their inherent androgyny.

Example? There are tons, but let’s look at this statue by Satanic Temple (at this point I wouldn’t expect anything better from them). Here the figure resembles the classic Baphomet in most elements, but you can see their breast is removed and changed into “masculine” chest. Meanwhile his phallic caduceus and beard (yes, female goats sometimes have beards but it’s still culturally perceived as masculine) remain untouched. Their beard is even bigger than on Levi’s picture, and the overall sihuette is buffer, emphasizing the things associated with masculinity and eradicating the ones associated with the feminine.

Like why are you folks trying to fit a literal duality symbol into gender binary.

Book of Shadows Tips

The book you use doesn't really matter, but at the same time it does. By this I mean your book of shadows doesn't need to model someone else's. It can look like anything. What it looks like depends all on the type of person you are. If you need something pretty or something you're generally drawn toward to keep writing in it then by all means use that. If you're in the broom closet, a school notebook or binder or folder will work wonders. Additionally, you could use a diary with a lock. If you can't write for any reason, whether its related to a disability or your handwriting just isn't the best or any other reason, you could type it or dictate it into an app or document. If you find a certain font easier to read, then use that font. Your book of shadows should work for you and be customized to your needs. You could print this if you want a physical copy.

Don't make a contents list. If you're using a notebook for your book of shadows, you may run out of pages for your contents list but still have room left to go in your notebook. For more on this, reference the video "Tips for Starting a Book of Shadows" linked down below.

If you are the kind of person that needs a contents list for organizational purposes, then I recommend using a folder with prongs or pockets (warning: pockets get stuffed quickly), a binder, or a digital book of shadows. This is because these options are easily editable and you have an endless amount of space to put your contents list.

If you're scared of making mistakes, write in erasable pens or pencils. HearthWitch in a video linked down below, recommends using kneaded erasers. This is because they are less likely to leave marks or streaks compared to regular erasers.

Use post it notes or leave room to add notes or alterations. This way if you alter a spell in the future, learn something new about a topic, etc then you can add it in to your notes.

Your book of shadows doesn't need to be aesthetically pleasing to anyone else. If you want it to match your aesthetic for your own pleasure, then by all means tea stain those pages, use watercolor, write in calligraphy, etc. But know it doesn't have to be that way if you don't want it to be. This is your book of shadows, it doesn't need to be liked by anyone but you. Others, if you choose to share it with someone, may like it. But at the end of the day, you should be the most happy with it.

Don't use a language, like runic or Latin, if you can't write or read it. Google translate isn't the best at translating sentences back and forth between languages. So when you look back at your book of shadows you may not understand it or be able to translate it, etc etc. Doing this may lead to problems in the future. However, if you are fluent in or at least advanced in a language then by all means write in it.

Broom Closet Tip: If you want to use a different language because you are scared of someone finding it. Use a notebook or diary people aren't likely to check instead because it doesn't raise as much suspicion. Or use a digital version and log out of the app, website, etc. If someone checks your accounts, then create two or more. Use one for personal use and one for them to look at.

If you want a physical book of shadows and can't write in a straight line, you may want to get a lined notebook. If this look bothers you, like it does me, try grid paper/graph paper or dotted paper.

Figure out your medium and how it interacts with your book of shadows. Will the pages buckle or warp from the (watercolor) paint? Will the ink bleed through the pages? Will the ink bleed outwards? Do you have good speech to text functions? Can you type in a format that you find appealing? Do you have access to this medium or is it a rare item that may be discontinued at some point?

Bonus Tip: You may want to have a test page: a page where you test out different mediums to see if they work with the paper you're planning on using.

It may be helpful to have two books for your book of shadows. One for getting ideas out there. Scribble down notes about your topic in free hand. While this doesn't have to be the best handwriting, it should still be legible. Treat this as a piece of scrap paper. When you are happy with your gathered notes and information, you can transfer this into a second book of shadows.

Bonus Tip: If you want an aesthetically pleasing book of shadows, you may want your second book to be prettier or something your more drawn to.

Emergency Witch Kit

Should haves:

• Box, bag, or anything else to hold all these items. I use an Altoids container.

• White, Red, Brown/Green, Yellow, and Blue birthday candles (for elements and one for you, or RYOGBV for color associations)

• Rose Quartz, Amethyst, or Obsidian are good starters. Any other crystals can be added based on what you think you’ll need.

• Chalk

• A small fire safe bowl, may need to be stored separately

Additional items:

• Matches or a lighter

• A small bundle of cleansing herbs

• A bay leaf (or two!)

• Salt (a package from a restaurant works and fits fine)

• Your choice of divination tool

Why these items?

🕯Candles: To represent the elements when you can’t get access to them, or to burn as part of a spell

💎Crystals: Rose quartz is amazing for self-love and healing, while amethyst is good for protection and safety. Obsidian is amazing at protection too!

🧂Chalk and Salt: These are to make a circle if you wanted to cast a spell, talk to your deities or guides, or to draw sigils and such. A little goes a lot way, and be careful

🌿Bay Leaf: You can burn these (safely!) for a simple wish

🥛 Fire safe bowl: this is for safety- you should burn anything (herbs or candles) without something to catch the ashes or hold the candle.

🍃Herbs: Cleanse the space, as long as you aren't around others and have good ventilation

First Quarter:

can see a clear half-moon in the sky. at half power. sun is side by side with moon

best for: reflection, taking a pause, revel in what you have been working on and celebrate achievements. think about how u want to celebrate full moon, get ready for serious action.

Waxing Gibbous:

slither of dark moon left unseen. one step away from full power

best for: one phase away from full, hone in on intentions/goals/actions.

make sure you are paying attention to details and staying mindful of what is externally and internally happening

Full Moon:

Big boy moon. Full power. can tap into her energy to help gain insight or to 💫manifest💫. most powerful time of the moon

best for: manifestations, adding more power to your intentions. good for rituals/spells. great time for releasing or banishing rituals, manifestations spells and meditation. good for charging and cleansing. Moon water

Waning Gibbous:

winding down of moons power. sun is moving away and taking its light with it.

The Parchment Tablet Of Awakening And The Black Key

The 5th Writing Of Evoking The Demons Of Hell

Here - as indicated in the previous text of this book - we shall examine the core of the Magickal Workings held within EVOKING THE DEMONS OF HELL, the two Implements at the center of the Black Arts detailed in this manuscript, these being The Parchment Tablet Of Awakening and The Black Key. In the Magickal practices put forth in this book The Parchment Tablet Of Awakening takes the place of the usual ‘Power Center’ which is most often a Pentacle of some form. The Parchment Tablet should be forged from Parchment Card and inscribed with Demonic Sigils as indicated in the below image. In the top left hand corner the Sigil of Satan should be inscribed, in the right hand corner should be the Sigil of Lilith. Along the bottom from left to right should be inscribed the Sigils of Beelzebub, Abaddon and Lucifuge Rofocale respectively. At the center of the parchment should be displayed The Seal Of The Five Infernal Monarchs, which is a Merged Sigil of all Five of the Demonic Monarchs which rule over the Infernal Regions. If possible the parchment card should be ivory in colour or a shade of a similar hue, the Sigils should be inscribed in black ink using a writing tool kept specifically for Magickal purposes such as forging Sigils or writing Oaths and Pacts etc … .  The Black Key should a crystal stone of black hue (preferably either Obsidian, Jet, Onyx or Black Tourmaline), if at all possible try to obtain an Obsidian stone for this purpose. One of the best kind to use are what are referred to often as ‘Palm Stones’ polished crystal discs. At the beginning of Opening Workings within EVOKING THE DEMONS OF HELL The Parchment Tablet Of Awakening is placed at the center of the Working surface and after it is empowered by ‘The Grand Conjuration Of Satan’ and ‘The Entreaty Of Satan’ has been recited then The Black Key is employed to activate The Parchment Tablet Of Awakening fully and so erect the Infernal Working Area. The Black Key shall have been empowered on being obtained (also through The Grand Conjuration Of Satan), over many uses this ‘Black Key’ becomes more and more imbued with the energy of the Demons and in particular the energy of Our Lord Satan eventually becoming a literal Key which opens the portals between our own World and the darkened dominions of Hell.

I just want to say that I love the dynamic between Shen Yuan and Shang Qinghua so much in your story. It always bother me how Shen Yuan acted towards Shang Qinghua, blaming him or being a bit harsh on him, then Shang Qinghua acts scared or something. In a way it’s kinda refreshing to see Shang Qinghua act differently compared to other fanfics when it comes to dealing with Shen Yuan. Love your story, it’s definitely my favorite fanfic!<3

To be slightly fair to Shen Yuan, SVSSS Shang Qinghua is an asshole. He’s INCREDIBLY blasé to Shen Yuan’s situation and everything Shen Yuan is going through + everything Luo Binghe is going through (the abuse, the abyss, the insanity-inducing sword). Because at this point SY is like 4 years ish into his transmigration and Airplane is 40 years ish minimum into his transmigration. 

When I first met Airplane, reading SVSSS for the first time, I was like, “WOW, this guy is mentally fucked up! He is totally detached from this! This man is probably disassociating through 75% of his life!” 

(No fucking wonder Mobei-Jun is making, like, almost 0% progress here.) 

And part of what I find interesting about Shang Qinghua’s character is I kind of read the dude as basically internally screaming into the void: “MAKE ME CARE! MAKE ME CARE! I don’t give a shit about anything and it’s killing me! Give me something to care about in this fake world full of fake people who hate me before I go fucking insane! At least, anymore insane than I already am!”

So when Shen Yuan and Shang Qinghua finally clock each other as transmigrators, and Shen Yuan is ready to clock Shang Qinghua across the face for everything, Shang Qinghua is kind of like, “FINALLY!” It’s like SY’s presence snapped the guy awake. Shang Qinghua is a dick to Shen Yuan sometimes, a real asshole of an ally and a fucked-up friend to have, but he helps! His priorities are completely skewed and his worldview is ruthless, but he has enough humanity in him still to help Shen Yuan!

Like, I don’t really want to call them friends sometimes? They’re two people in a really, really fucked up situation who have no hope of being understood so completely by anyone else in the world. It’s an “you’re all I have” situation. 

And SVSSS doesn’t really... go into this in detail? Neither SY or SQH end the story by actually opening up to each other, so we get the surface level of it all, in which SY harshly blames SQH for everything and SQH laughs at many of SY’s personal difficulties. Which didn’t so much bother me (SVSSS has lots of flaws to be bothered by, imo) as direct me on how I wanted to engage with SVSSS as a fanfiction author: I wanted to explore Shang Qinghua’s relationship with his world and the people he only sees as characters, plus the face he puts on for other people (the coward and the traitor) versus his surprising fearlessness and personal loyalty. 

And I wanted to explore Shang Qinghua and Shen Yuan (on this note, holy shit, does SY as SQQ have his emotions locked the fuck down where no one can get at them, not even him, most of the time) opening up and supporting each other more directly. I agree with you that a lot of people don’t always focus on (maybe it’s not what they’re interested in focusing on) the soul-deep trauma of being stuck on what’s essentially an alien world, with only one person from home, who you might have said you wouldn’t hang out with if they were “the last person on Earth”. Shen Yuan and Shang Qinghua each wear so many masks, they have so many available paths, that their dynamic can shift very easily. 

Anyway, thank you! Thank you so much for following my fic and letting me know you enjoy it! My fic “pride is not the word I’m looking for” is very much me going, “HEY! Is anyone going to explore this concept that is very important to me and possibly only me?” And then not waiting for an answer.

My favorite image of Ares and Eros. Here Ares looks very contemplative and just. When people find out that I have a working relationship with Ares many are very confused as he is the god of war and bloodlust and is depicted as cowardly in many myths. While all of that is true, in my experience the Ares I’ve interacted with is very much an advocate for the people. He fights for what is right and also fights in the name of justice. He is the god of civil order, and he the god of rebellion in response to unjust civil order. This is how I know that Ares would be pro-revolution, in favor of all the BLM and trans lives protests. The first time he came to me was a few weeks ago when I had got back from a Black Lives Matter protest, I think it was my protesting that attracted him to me. In a few myths he plays the role of a policeman, arresting the criminal Sisyphos who captured death(Thanatos) and also avenging the rape of his daughter Alkippe. He is considered to be the patron god of all abuse survivors and he is very protective, so it pains me to compare him to a policeman because ACAB, but I just mean the idea of what the police and the law are supposed to represent. He is also a god of passion and very connected to the element of fire. He appreciates power and aggression, but mostly as a means to build healthy boundaries and as security. He was worshipped a lot in Sparta(predictably) and apparently (according to theoi.com) some human sacrifices were made to him there, which I think is crazy. However, my favorite cult of his is the Amazon warrior women. They were said to be followers of him and their queens to have been his direct daughters. He also has a festival associated with him that only women were allowed to participate in. I think many people write Ares off because he is the god of war and bloodlust, and favor his Roman counterpart Mars who was more about civil order, but I truly think that Ares is underappreciated and actually very sweet. Cards he used to describe himself in a tarot spread I used with him were six of wands (public recognition of victory) and Queen of Swords(the advocate). If you are an Artemis devotee I would really recommend building a relationship with Ares as well if you are interested in doing social justice work in your craft. In my experience both of their energy really pushes me to try and be a better world citizen.

There are wrong ways: actions and words that harm those with less power.

Renaming things (such as Lokisday or Loki III) is fine.

Not renaming things is fine.

Some people despise Loki and those who follow him.

To find safety and shelter, his followers ought to be united.

Unity is not created by erasing differences.
