god, i am a heilung loyalist until the day i die. i'd follow them back to europe if i could afford to. at red rocks they made the rain stop and brought out the full moon and a stadium of ten thousand people howled like wolves all night. very fucking cool. 1000/10
sooooooo i saw heilung and they were so captivating and entrancing that i kind of maybe sort of yolo bought tickets to see them at red rocks in colorado this coming tuesday........ and yes that IS on the other side of the country from me
BUT IN MY DEFENSE 1) they're featuring Eivør as a special guest and she's one of my favorite folk musicians AND she's not playing anywhere else in the US and 2) it's fucking red rocks okay??

Your meta post was so interesting, I never picked up on the first line of dialogue and I’m curious if you have more thoughts on the ideological differences you mentioned!
thank you and of course! in reference to this post, first a disclaimer that im going off of a particular translation of the manga available online so other versions may have a different line of dialogue that could change the meaning. beyond that, i think it’s primarily really interesting either way you interpret the line.
a) roy desperately wants to kill envy without riza’s interference and appeals to her guilt to get her to stand down. he would know better than anyone how much she wants to avoid killing or causing more harm, so it’s a good strategy. it is kind of cynical to view him as casually manipulative like that, but i don’t think it’s unrealistic either. we know he is capable of lashing out in anger or frustration, and this is the climax of all the emotional turmoil he’s faced in the series. it does make me wonder if riza would have viewed things this way and whether how much this incident comes up for them in the future
b) roy genuinely doesn’t want to let riza kill anyone or anything out of his own guilt and knowledge that killing would “dirty [her] hands” and this is part of his motivation in killing envy himself. we know that they avoided killing as much as possible, only injuring the soldiers loyal to central command rather than inflicting mass fatalities. clearly killing is a moral issue for them both, but riza demonstrates her willingness to do so when necessary (however it’s more likely she viewed killing envy as necessary because of the threat they presented rather than as suitable justice for killing hughes). what i find particularly interesting though is that if roy really believes killing envy puts more blood on one’s hands, he views the homunculi as having the same moral right to exist as humans. but after killing lust in the same excruciating manner, he shows no remorse. so, he is blatantly more concerned about riza’s moral standing than his own because he sees her as the moral paragon in his life. putting her in that position and allowing her to shoot him if necessary is exactly why she won’t let him continue. it’s an interesting entanglement of his interests and belief system, wherein if riza actually stood by and allowed him to torture envy to save herself the responsibility, she would not be fit to serve as his conscience and it would be less relevant whether she dirtied her hands or not. im not sure if that’s all coming across very clearly, but i just think it’s interesting when you can really dig into how roy views riza
i would assume his real intention is a bit of both—a genuine feeling and belief that comes out easily as a dismissal to justify his wrath. im curious if anyone else would interpret things differently though!

based on royai week day 4: afterglow i considered writing a meta analysis on royai in “flames of vengeance” and “beyond the inferno” with all the implications on their past, present, and future, inspired by the taylor swift song “afterglow” as a track that functions as an apology for “burning down” a relationship due to an unnecessary conflict—roy’s pov after almost forcing riza to kill him, if you will
but i’m just a little too lazy to go in depth enough to say anything not said before by wiser royai minds, so instead i wanted to point out a few small details i found that i don’t often see brought up. there are many, many great royai moments that take place during the promised day, but most of us will have seen those major ones plenty of times before
Tumblr media
“i have no intention of letting you dirty your hands”
roy says this after riza insists that she will kill envy rather than him. why is this relevant? it implies that roy sees the act of killing itself as the sin in question, not the manner. throughout the scene, we learn very clearly that in contrast, riza’s crisis is motivated by roy’s unbridled cruelty rather than his goal to kill envy.
it’s unclear whether roy is completely driven by rage and vengeance and simply using this line as an excuse to get riza to lower her gun, or if there’s some sincerity in his refusal to let her kill again (i lean toward the latter). either way, this single line conjures some more interesting ideological differences between them
Tumblr media
the confrontation with the gold-toothed doctor, “why you…”
during the fight with the fuhrer candidates, we see riza overtaken, brought to the ground neck-first. roy also sees this, with his sole focus highlighted by the lines pointing toward her in the upper panel. he readies a snap in their direction to save her (possibly the very first time he would have used flame alchemy in this scene despite the stakes already being incredibly high) and it’s apparently because of this distraction that he is also overtaken, with two other combatants able to take him down by ruining his gloves.
Tumblr media
yay chimeras to the rescu–oh shit did roy just behead someone?
once the mad scramble to take down the remaining fuhrer candidates and nab the philosophers stone begins, roy has the single minded goal of reaching riza and attempting to heal her. as he escapes their clutches courtesy of mei’s kunai to the head, roy appears to use the sword of one captor to decapitate the other. all i’m gonna say on this one is: if he wanted to, he would

I've seen your posts on veganism, and you being a biologist makes me feel ok to ask this! I am not vegan, but I've dealt with a lot of pressure and guilt to become one from them, and it never works for me at all. However, because I'm super passionate about conservation, especially stopping deforestation, i have had MORE pressure than usual to go vegan for the planet, under some guise that this was what would help. When reading about it, a lot said cattle farming causes a lot of deforestation, and making native species there go extinct. Obviously I'm against that, but I don't want to go vegan. I've tried. I cannot. But a lot of people say it isn't possible to be a conservationist and care for the planet and eat meat. I'm curious to hear a scientific reply to these claims and hopefully have an end put to it? Thanks.
I don't remember specifically making posts about veganism to be honest but it's a complete lie that sustainably raised livestock contribute to deforestation. I don't know where you live, but here in the US it is true that we have destructive conventional animal farms which pollute the environment, but you also aren't forced to buy your meat that way. There are tons of small-scale, regenerative farms in every state in the country. It's not hard to find good quality meat raised on farms that are acting as a net benefit to the environment. Properly-managed regenerative farms increase biodiversity, rebuild topsoil, reduce carbon emissions, and produce meat that is healthier to consume. Check out Joel Salatin, the owner of Polyface Farm. He has written several books on the subject (and is much more highly educated than myself).
Also, I find it ironic that vegans cry about deforestation when their diets consist entirely of foods such as corn, soy, wheat, rice, and other grains, all of which involve destruction of massive swathes of natural biomes to make way for thousands of acres of monocropping. Not to mention exploitation of workers in foreign countries and the MASSIVE carbon footprint left by shipping crops across the world (or even just across the US). Oh, and we can't forget that, on top of the animals wiped out during the destruction of their habitats to make way for the farmland itself, the machinery used to tend to the crops kills thousands upon thousands of small creatures such as mice, voles, frogs, etc. out in the field (which in turn affects predator populations). There is literally no such thing as a cruelty-free diet. It is simply not possible, and vegans who say they are cruelty-free are lying to themselves.
I can say with absolute certainty that the impact my own diet has on the environment is not only significantly less than that of ANY vegan, but my diet actually supports a net positive effect. I eat only beef from a local farm that raises their cattle entirely on grass, practices regenerative rotational grazing and slaughters locally. My meat travels less than 20 miles total. The topsoil on the farm is deep and lush, it doesn't smell or pollute the nearby waterways, and the animals are stress-free and healthy. (And I pay a lot less for it than grocery store meat.)
If veganism doesn't work for you, don't do it. And don't let anyone try to pressure you into eating in a way you know isn't right for you. You are not a slave to the demands of others. If you passionately want to reduce your impact on the environment, then buy local, in-season and organic wherever possible, and commit yourself to eliminating anything from your diet that does not fall into that category. This could be a massive undertaking depending on where you're starting from, and it has a learning curve to it. But if it really matters to you, you'll do it. If it doesn't really matter to you, then it's better to have that conversation with yourself sooner rather than later.

Like every five to twenty years the medical/dietary experts are forced to admit "So yeah okay the stuff we've been telling you all this time was a complete and total lie that someone just outright paid us to tell. But you still have to believe everything else we're saying because if you don't you're an anti-science moron."
