I see your "Laios is trans" but that dude is THE most apathetically agender person on the planet. Laios does not have time for gender. Laios does not even HAVE a gender identity, he removed it to make room for more Monster Facts.

Yeah, Ianto's hot on the 'Disco' audio cover, but omg, the synopsis? Ianto's dad seeming like a normal, happy person, and then *suddenly* a man called 'Tom' wants to build a fence with him (definitely not Ianto btw).
Skip to 'Blind Summit', and 'House of The Dead', where Ianto's dad seems to be an abusive drunk who doesn't care for his family. How Ianto can't even visit him before he died in hospital (sometime between 2004-early 2006). Due to their fractured relationship.
The wanting to build a fence thing.........it's giving Rose Tyler grabbing Pete Tyler before he was hit by the car.

listen. i know it's not 2014 anymore and i know it's just a throwaway line and that the russo brothers didnt intend for marvel action blockbuster captain america the winter soldier to become the tragic gay love story that never was but man. having steve say "it's kind of hard to find someone with shared life experience" in a conversation about romantic relationships right before the bucky reveal is so cruel. it's not just about steve and bucky obviously having the shared experience of being "out of time," it's the fact that they've both been stripped of their humanity in opposite directions. steve is a legend, he is an american hero and a national icon before he is a human being the same way that bucky is a weapon and a killing machine before he is a human being. steve knows that anyone who falls in love with him in the 21st century fell in love with captain america first, and that's just not him. but then the one person who knew him first and knew him best and loved him (not captain america, that little guy from brooklyn) so much he died for it is alive, impossibly. and it's a miracle because he's back and it's horrific because he's back under the worst possible circumstances. but to steve, the winter soldier is worth tearing the world apart for because he's always been bucky first. they find each other and suddenly they're human again. and maybe, despite it all, being "out of time" becomes a blessing, because in this century they'd finally be allowed to love each other the way they've always wanted to. like real people do.
like. no. the captain america trilogy isn't about two queer men traumatized and alienated by war and modern life rediscovering and reclaiming their humanity through their love for each other. but. i mean. it couldve been

ianto jones is not an uwu baby. ianto jones shot his coworker. ianto jones wrestled a pterodactyl in order to land a job with a top secret organization. ianto jones kept a killer robot and her conversion machine in the basement for MONTHS bc she was his girlfriend. then he fucked the guy that killed her after telling the guy he was excited to watch him die.
ianto jones is the ultimate example of 'beware the quiet/sweet ones' he will remember how you like your coffee and then two hours later try to cave your head in for something he may or may not be in the wrong about

Best part of the sound of drums/ last of the time lords is the shared arc Martha and Jack have of pining hard for the doctor despite believing him to be immortal and timeless and above such things as romantic connection only to see him simp big time for the genocidal megalomaniacal sadistic bigot who made their lives hell for a year and simultaneously realise
‘Wait, seriously?!!! THAT GUY???!!! That’s the guy we’re playing second fiddle to?!’
And both of them decide ‘hmm you know what? Maybe he ain’t worth it. He really ain’t all that.’

This is why the characters are so interesting!! I agree that Ianto is not an uwu softboi, but to only see him as a hardened badass is ALSO missing a good chunk of who he is! He's 21!!!! This man has seen horror beyond his comprehension, had his life shaped and manipulated against his will, has dealt with loss on the largest scale DW shows us, and he has to be able to balance that!! The man who was trained to protect people from threats, who grew up working class and has money for the first time in his LIFE is trying to play the professional so hard in his suits and his formality but he's a kid! He falls in love, and makes dumb jokes, handles his grief as best he can, even if it's not well, and is constantly trying to fight for a moral compass and a soul he fears he's losing. THAT'S WHY HE'S SO COMPELLING!!
Imo Ianto could have been a companion in an alternative universe, but Hartman got there first. Which makes him a really compelling case study about the nature of people and the choices we make based on the options presented to us.
One of the things about Torchwood that always really got me was how clearly it's an extension of the Doctor Who ethos. DW is all about how ordinary people handle extraordinary circumstances and the nature of goodness in us, and I think TW is much the same! But the lengths people will go to are fundamentally different because their treat assessment and available options are skewed by the CONSEQUENCES. We get some consequence episodes in DW but nothing on the scale of TW because they make all of these things REAL. They show what the rest of the civilians would be dealing with and how institutions are likely to respond. No one better understands that "everything looks like a bail" better than the OG "Aliens are Evil" team.
