Alastor could’ve killed Adam anytime he wanted, but he didn’t because he wanted to toy with him first. Alastor prides himself in being the most powerful demon in Hell, so of course he’s gonna take his sweet time throwing the first man around to show off his power before he kills him, which would arguably be his proudest achievement. But Adam has enough and overpowers him, causing Alastor to retreat.

Alastor’s pride was his weakness.
