The Monster Trio is such an amazing dynamic because if you go back and re-read One Piece you’ll find out that it has always been them. I have never seen a more beautifully written trio in any anime or manga. The Pirate King and his Wings. Not just since Thriller Bark or Long Ring Long Island or Little Garden or Loguetown or even Arlong Park—No, I think the Wings dynamic has been determined since Baratie. Zoro and Sanji were destined to be saved by Luffy and to help Luffy fly in return. The warrior and the knight. The sword and the shield. Strength and Love. And Luffy sitting at the very top of everything they believe in and fight for.

The Jayce!top or Jayce!bottom discourse has been really funny because in League of Legends he literally switches between two distinct sets of weapons, abilities, roles, and stats. His whole schtick is that he excels at both. He's brains and braun. He's good at everything he tries and looks good doing it.

Make that bisexual, versatile switch do whatever you want him to do. He's eager to show off and eager to please.

So I had a random thought and it's, why isn't Ikkaku a member of Shinigami men association?

Like, He is buddies with Iba, so why wouldn't he support Iba's delusions of leadership and men's rights join? Then I thought well Ikkaku’s not the "let's wear sunglasses and sit behind desks designing soul pagers" type, at least not when you can beat people up for fun or spend time doing goodies with Yumichika

But then again it's not a full time thing, even Akon is there and well Akon probably prefers to open people up than sit and design

And he's the type to want gatherings, like, definitely not an introvert, so...?

He's too cool for this stupid gatherings ofc, but is that all?

Is he, how to say it, the type to not think (that) lowly of women? Because the men's association seemed to have personal beef with women's association ( I personally think he'd be fine with women and isn't a sexist, at least not more than what some sense of masculinity would give you, he's our good bro for a reason)

Or did Yumichika say the men's association is an ugly idea and he agreed like a good husband

You know, I've actually thought about this exact thing a while back. I'm going to try not to ramble forever but I fear this may get long.

Good catch on Ikkaku being a gatherings sort of person. He loves people. A men's group seems right up his alley. So what exactly is going on here?

At first I considered that Ikkaku was unconcerned with 'manliness' and that he was just incidentally masculine by nature. But he has from time to time mentioned manliness as a concept to aspire to. Like with Moe, he mentions spanking Moe like a kid or beating him like a man. And the fact that he, alongside Iba, writes articles in the 'men's section' of the Seireitei Bulletin. It's not out of the question that Ikkaku COULD care about 'manliness.' However, the Moe thing likely has less to do with a separation from 'womanliness' and is moreso about maturity. And Ikkaku might just be helping Iba out because he's skilled at writing (being from a prestigious family and all) and because IBA cares about 'manliness' and HE thinks Ikkaku is manly.

There is, of course, Yumichika. Yumichika might feel alienated in a men's group because of his flamboyant mannerisms. And he might just not care because his interests are more feminine. I don't know if Yumichika would or wouldn't necessarily tell Ikkaku not to go. But if Yumichika doesn't want to join, Ikkaku might just opt to hang out with his 'best friend' instead.

Iba may be Ikkaku's friend, but he is also Ikkaku's rival/frenemy. Ikkaku has expressed annoyance with Iba on multiple occasions. Ikkaku could be fed up with Iba's obsession with manliness because it's annoying. Especially when Iba has lectured Ikkaku about what a man should do during their fight in the SS Arc. Ikkaku might see joining as asking for another lecture from Iba about how Ikkaku isn't man enough.

It could be Yachiru. Ikkaku doesn't like being on the receiving end of Yachiru's ire. And he has expressed fear of her before. She might have commanded Ikkaku not to attend due to a rivalry between the men's and women's associations and Ikkaku did as he was told.

There is the queer explanation. Ikkaku, the makeup-wearing, dancing queen whose life's aspiration is to be under another man and is 'best friends' with a genderqueer mean-gay. THAT GUY would definitely have a history with the concept of 'manliness' the same way a lot of queers have trauma surrounding ideals of masculinity and feminity. Maybe Ikkaku is just too queer for all that. Even if the people around him don't see it that way, maybe he sees himself as too different.

You might not like how simple my ultimate answer is, but I don't think Ikkaku cares about 'manliness' as much as he cares about warriorhood. He is primarily concerned with how a warrior acts, how a warrior lives, how a warrior dies, how a TRUE warrior fights. I don't think he really cares about manliness as an admirable concept divorced from womanliness. Ikkaku has never once expressed any sort of sexist (well-meaning or otherwise) thought or action. But he talks all the time about his pride as a warrior and how he loves a good brawl and about how a real warrior fights. Ultimately, I don't think he sees himself as a 'man' but he sees himself as a 'warrior.' If there were a fight club, you know he would be there no matter what Yumichika or Yachiru or Iba or anyone thought.
