There is a kind of relevant detail that a lot of hayffie-haters seem to forget about:
Hayffie is canon.
Sure, it’s only movie-canon but it’s still canon, it’s still been kept in the movie, the movie where the AUTHOR had a say in. I get it when sb says that they like the books more but you can’t just ignore the films. Sure, it’s also just a kiss and we don’t see them be together, but it’s still a kiss.
I feel like we don’t bring that into the discussion often enough.

I think Hayffie is the OPPOSITE of ruining the message of the book. The fact that a capitol women falls in love with a district man is such a good message with the context of remember who the real enemy is. The people in the capitol and the districts are not enemies.
i just saw a tt that said that hayffie ship technically ruins the whole message of the books, because the ship dissolve the fact of the ignorance excuse the others for a bad behavior and it was exposed like this:
- effie wasn’t a bad person but she bought all the capitol propaganda so that makes her a part of the problem
- and haymitch fall in love for a rebel, and fought for a rebel (leonore dove), and he promised his life for that ideal. So falling in love for effie makes him loose that fight
I personally don’t think that the ship damage any of the points of the books, and just a representation of second chances and the sense of empathy over the different contexts
but i would also like to know what you think lol

did we just witness Proserpina Trinket using her great-aunt’s money to send Haymitch his comfort meal after Maysilee’s death? She gave Haymitch her favorite ice creem to make him feel better just like a child offering their favorite stuffed toy :(

THIS!!!! And that’s why i really need a book about Effie </3
I'm sorry but am I the only one who interpreted the "They really are for the greater good. The Hunger Games"-line as Effie masking her real thoughts??? Like, I cannot be the only one catching that her HG support is clearly performative????? It's not a coincidence that every time she says something slightly out of line she loudly proclaims her support of the games. She knows who's listening.

POV: What if Haymitch went on the rescue mission and found imprisoned Effie himself.
There she was. Laying on the cold floor of that dim, forgotten cell. Bruised, cuts scattered across her arms, drowned in a white seclusion gown that hung off her like a ghost of who she used to be.
Effie.
She looked completely exhausted.
Haymitch’ heart stopped. For a second, everything around him blurred. All he could see was her.
He rushed in, dropped to his knees beside her. “Effie,” he whispered, barely able to say her name. He reached out for her, and with her last bit of strength, she pulled herself up and fell into his arms.
She didn’t speak, just clung to him with trembling hands, fingers fisting into his coat like he was the last solid thing in a world that had completely fallen apart. Her gown was stained with blood, wrinkled, too thin for the cold cel she was held for weeks.
Haymitch held her. No questions. Just his arms wrapped around her, trying to shield her from everything she’d been through.

Bawling my eyes out brb
Tumblr media
A letter that’s been given to Haymitch Abernathy on the morning of the 75th Reaping. A letter which he first forgot and then ignored till after the execution Coin‘s. A letter which now sits in his bedside drawer. A letter which he rereads every year on their wedding anniversary, thankful that the love of his life survived the torture and the trial.
(This took so much time, hope y’all like it ✨)

Ohhhhh you couldn’t describe it better.
suzanne collins, for such a small character that effie is, didn't had to elaborate so much in her previous years
she didn't had to make effie the oldest perfectionist daughter of a rich but repudiated family with a dark past
she didn't had to write the reason behind effie as an escort being just wanting to help her sister out of a trouble, as vain as it would seem "homework from school"
she didn't had to write a romcom first met trope for her and haymitch
she didn't had to write effie bonding with the most anti-capitol tribute of all of them (aka maysilee my girl)
she didn't had to write effie being the last person haymitch sees before going to the arena and the first person he sees after
she didn't had to write effie stepping between peacekeapers about to shot and haymitch
she didn't had to show us her worries and her fears
she didn't had to write effie not wanting any recognition from her work in the 50th hunger games
she didn't had to write effie being the only to reasure him
she didn't had to make effie say something bordering rebelious and then turned back the cards saying something to fit the capitol thinking
she didn't had to write effie being the only one to keep an eye on him and trying to keep him sober and taken care
even if suzanne collins never intended to make a great deal of effie as a character, or to make haymitch and effie a romantic couple, she just gave us one of the best elaborations on not one (effie) but two (haymitch) characters and their relationship
understand it as you want, platonic or romantic, maybe even both, but effie and haymitch's relationship has to be one of the best relationships i have read in like forever, they didn't started as lovers, they are hardly friends in the start, but they started as two people in the same messy (to say the least) situation and still managed to have understanding and support of each other.
seriously, how people see all this and get "oh, yeah effie was fully brainwashed", "effie and haymitch hated each other's guts" "suzanne destroyed hayffie"

No no no no you don't get it Suzanne did not close the door on Hayffie in SotR, she threw the door wide open for the movie.
Haymitch and Effie having some kind of romantic relationship is not canon in the books. It just isn't. It's subtext at best. Even the fact that they could be friends is pretty subtext. But Haymitch and Effie having some kind of romantic-friendship-situationship-relationship in the movies is like 97% canon. It's right in front of our eyeballs. Woody Harrelson and Elizabeth Banks were 10 toes down for that ship and we all knew it. (Bless them)
SotR provides ample material to support the beginnings of this relationship in the film, even alongside Haymitch and Lenore Dove. The makeup box scene? Are you kidding me? The woman could not have written a better meet cute for the two of them to play out on screen. Her flying in to his launch room at the last minute to fix his clothes and the locking eyes moment before he goes up into the arena? Movie magic if I ever saw it. I can already picture how they would shoot it to emphasize their connection (whether either of them likes it or not at this point).
Post games theyre suddenly the only relationship of any kind left standing once everyone else Haymitch cares about dies or he pushes them away. She's literally the only one left that means anything, that shows him any kindness, even as short-lived as their relationship is at this point. That makes them the emotional anchor for the end of the film. It’s unlikely but they could even show us moments from the 24 years they worked together since that’s canon now and still insane to me. (Suzanne gave them so much history!!! How is anyone not seeing this is a goldmine?)
Finally for the epilogue, it's written in such a way that you could easily tweak it to show Haymitch and his geese, and Effie somehow enters the scene. In my head, she’s visiting him since I don’t think they would ever have the kind of relationship where they’d live together all the time. At first I thought maybe they talk about the geese and how they mate for life oh wait no they don’t, but then I thought maybe Effie just says something along the lines of I heard you told them your story. Haymitch- yeah. Effie- Was I in it? Haymitch- of course you were. Etc etc. I don’t have it all figured out but the point being there’s a real opportunity here to make this both of their origin stories because of how their roles in the films play out.
There’s almost an equal opportunity here to shine the light on Effie’s background and motivations, and how she was basically put in her role as escort by accident (I’m still not over this) almost just as much as Haymitch was chosen against his will for the games.
But anyway, back to my original point. Do I think Suzanne wrote the book with the movie in mind? Maybe not, but she knows how this works by now. And she knows the differences between her Haymitch and Effie and the films’ Haymitch and Effie. Her version of the story does not include Hayffie in a straightforward way, but that doesn’t mean the films have to follow that to the letter. In fact, they’ve already deviated far from it in the original trilogy by keeping Effie in District 13 for Mockingjay, the KISS, etc.
As I’ve said a million times before, this is how adaptation should work at its finest. Giving the opportunity to tell a slightly different story based on the context and opportunities given by the adaptation medium. In this case, that involves 3 previous films that set up these characters and the actors’ choosing to make subtext text. All the ingredients are there. I’m so intrigued to see how they get put together.

Imagining domestic Hayffie after the events of mockingjay….they both have nightmares from PTSD and both wake the other when it happens. When Haymitch wakes Effie from her nightmares (that usually have to do with the abuse she suffered in prison), the first thing he says is, “I won’t hurt you” as he holds her.
Because anyone could say “you’re safe” “I’m here” “it’s okay”, but only they know he said that particular promise to her after his games. And after Effie manages to catch her breath, she always replies, “I know that.”
