My favorite part of the hunger games may very well be how they treat Effie. It's obvious that Effie was brought up different from them since she's Capitol. She cares a lot about appearances, fashion, and things the Districts may consider shallow, but it's obvious that she cares. I love that Katniss and Peeta don't look down on Effie and count her as shallow (like most YA mcs would), but instead choose to see how much she cares for them. Yes, she's different, and yes, she may care about some things that may seem trivial to the Districts, but it's obvious that she cares. I just love how they see that.

I’ve been re-reading the books again

So Haymitch is Katniss’s caregiver but would you believe he was the last to find out she’s a little? Well he was.

If you’ve read my last post you’d know that Cinna finds out immediately after the first games and Madge not long after that. With Katniss’s permission Cinna tells Effie at the start of the victory tour, she’s her escort and needs to know, and Peeta finds out the first night he stays in her room.

So Haymitch. No one wants to tell Haymitch. He’s emotionally volatile at the best of times and despite his obvious connection to Katniss no one could predict how he’d react. So Effie and Cinna make sure that Katniss’s little side is kept very distant from Haymitch.

But subconsciously at least, Katniss feels differently about this. When he hugs her it feels different to anyone else, when he strokes her hair and she feels like she might drop on the spot, when hearing his voice is what she wants most of all when she’s little.

So one night, a few days into the victory tour, Katniss wakes up early in the morning. Earlier than even Peeta. She’s little and bored. Despite a few attempts she can’t wake Peeta and ends up walking aimlessly around the train, even though she knows she shouldn’t. Katniss is walking around with her stuffie in her arms and her paci in her mouth. There’s no doubt that anyone who saw her would know.

And so logically she should avoid Haymitch and maybe go see if Cinna is awake yet but instead she ends up in the dining cart where she finds Haymitch swirling around a cup of something that’s presumably not coffee. Katniss stills, shuffling nervously on the spot when Haymitch looks up. Momentarily she fears for what Effie and Cinna had wanted her of. But then she remembers that it’s Haymitch. Who, despite his rough edges and biting personality cared about her. Undoubtedly.

Maybe there was something chemical about their connection because when their eyes met Katniss’s worries seemed to dissipate. And seeing Katniss standing in front of him, oversized cardigan sleeves covering her hands, pacifier bobbing tightly in her mouth, stuffed rabbit held closely to her chest, Haymitch physically felt a part of him melt.

Unsure how one should act in this situation Haymitch opens his arms, putting his mug down on the table with no hesitation. Katniss clambers onto his lap, feeling more content against his chest than she’d ever felt in her life.

And that’s how the others find them almost 20 minutes later when it’s completely unquestionable that Haymitch was Katniss’s caregiver.

Y/N WAS IN THE KITCHEN, PREPARING SOME DINNER. It was almost 5 pm and Katniss wasn't home, she was beginning to worry. She was out hunting, needing her time alone. She was supposed to be home almost an hour ago but she was taking her sweet time.

Usually, Y/N wouldn't mind Katniss taking longer hunting but she needed help with dinner because Haymitch and Effie were coming to eat. Y/N heard footsteps coming from the door, and it unlocks and she turns to see a very dirty Katniss. Dirt and mud dripping off her clothes.

Y/N's eyes widened and she gasped, she just cleaned the floors! "Katniss!" She ran up to her, checking her face for any sign of injury.

"I'm fine, just fell in some dirt." She put her hunting gear down, and sniffed the air with a delighted expression. "What's for dinner, princess?"

"Tomato soup and garlic bread, of course. It's Haymitch's favorite, he'll be very excited for it." Y/N walked back into the kitchen, Katniss following with a confused face.

"Why?" Katniss tried to sit down in the dining table but was grabbed by her girlfriend, disapproval on her face.

"Did you forget? Effie and Haymitch are coming down for dinner! I told you five times, Kitty, how could you forget?" Y/N tutted disappointingly. Katniss shrugged.

"Guess it slipped my mine, dear. Sorry. What can I do to make it up?" Katniss had a knowing look on her face, a smirk spreading her lips as Y/N shook her head, smiling.

"Help me with dinner first, Kitty. But first, clean up and come down as soon as you're done. They're coming at 6:30 so we better hurry."

Katniss sighed and nodded, going up for a quick shower. Y/N was pretty bored as she cleaned the mess that her girlfriend had made so she decided to put on some music.

As Katniss walked down, done with her shower. She saw Y/N finishing up dinner and she was suddenly overcome with contentment. She truly loved Y/N, and she looked so darn cute in that apron and pretty dress. Katniss's mouth morphed into a huge smile.

She looked so pretty with her hair made and a nice dress on. But no matter what Y/N looked like, Katniss would always think she was the most gorgeous lady in the world.

Katniss walked over and put her hand on her cheek, planting a quick kiss on her lips. "You look so pretty, honey."

Y/N blushed, looking down. They've been together for years but Katniss still made her blush like a schoolgirl seeing her crush. "Thank you, Kitty."

As if on cue, Katniss and Y/N's song came. Ain't no mountain high enough' by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell started playing and Y/N started laughing at how perfect this moment was.

Katniss grabbed her hand, twirling Y/N making her laugh even more. Katniss started singing loudly as they danced in the kitchen.

Katniss sang Marvin's part very passionately, Y/N was laughing at her girlfriend as she sang along with Tammi's. They started setting the table as they danced.

Katniss grabbed Y/N's shoulders as they sung loudly together. As the song ended they both started laughing loudly, crashing into the dining table chairs, sighing contently. "I love you, Kitty."

It was Katniss' turn to blush. "Love you more, gorgeous."

They heard a knock at the door and Y/N quickly got up, fixing her dress and taking off her apron. Katniss watched in admiration. She looked back at her, "Do I look alright-"

"You look more than alright, babe, you look stunning." Katniss smiled and took her hand, walking to the door to greet Haymitch and Effie.

Effie is the one that finally convinced Haymitch, after the war was over, that there wasn’t a reason that she couldn’t hold her close. There was no one to use his love against him

Thinking about how Effie wore a head scarf in Mockingjay part 1 to express herself since she didn’t have her wigs. How they used to be all the rage and we see that in TBOSAS and that makes me feel things.

I also love seeing the similarities in Effie and Tigris. Their love of fashion and expressing themselves through it. How they’re both Capitol, but caring people. And the growth that Effie goes through with Katniss and Peeta vs the Tigris and Coryo. Like Tigris continued to be kind by seeing the evil in Coryo and Effie grew more understanding because of Katniss and Peeta going through this trauma that she finally sees.

So Panem is set in the future, right? Meaning our current American society is the history behind Panem.

So, hypothetically, not that I've been thinking about this, it would theoretically be possible that there are certain things in our society that would be persevered, and therefore consumable for the people of Panem.

And if a certain Peeta Mellark was married to a certain Katniss Everdeen, who both seem to have a love/appreciation for music, were to be discussing interesting things they read about the previous country's pop culture to a certain Effie Trinket, it would not at all be impossible that they could get on the subject of old, classic musicians that were incredibly popular in their time, and thus were historically preserved for future enjoyment and such.

Now, I'd imagine things such as devices for music would only be available to the Capitol after The Dark Days until after Mockingjay, when the country is once again united and it's now easy to get whatever wherever so long as you put down an order to come on the next shipment to your District.

So overall... hypothetically... it could be possible for Katniss and Peeta to slowly develop into vinyl collectors post-canon. With probably way too big of a collection because hey, they have the room, and there's so much available to order in the catalogs Effie keeps subscribing them to, and there's just something nice about the things. What, with the maintenance, the calming sound of an old vinyl with pops and snaps or the sharp clarity of a new, clean press.

Or, OR, not that I've thought about this either. Would it be possible that when Peeta disappears into his room on the train back to 12 after the first Hunger Games, at some point Effie realizes he's isolating and goes to check on him. Partially as her job, partially because Effie genuinely cares about why he's upset. And Peeta being a freshly traumatized 16 year old kid who just lost his leg and is now experiencing his first relationship + hearbreak all at once let's Effie in because he wants some sort of motherly figure right now, and since Haymitch knew about the fake relationship, Effie is probably gonna find out soon enough if she doesn't know already. So he's just sobbing on the bed, pouring out his whole lovesick and raw heart to Effie while she just strokes his back and tries to calm him. And knowing Effie, she's slowly reaching over to a remote to program some radio in the room to some fitting music, promising it'll all be alright, and you know, there's some very beautiful, retro music that is very fitting for times like this. Would you like to hear some? Let's just try it, just for fun, hmm?

Long story short, Peeta already has a head start on his and Katniss's combined vinyl collection from when Effie was his dealer for Taylor Swift music before the war.

(Post canon his favorite song is 'State of Grace' Acoustic Version, but during Catching Fire?? That boy was BLARING 'illicit affairs' so much Haymitch gets 'nam flashbacks when Peeta lets it play one day while he cleans with the window open, making Haymitch storm out of his house, screaming at him to "shut that shit off!" And confusing the entire District as he begs Peeta to "not make me live through this again," and "whatever she did it wasn't worth this." Peeta has no fucking clue what he's talking about since a lot of memories were lost or muddled due to the hijacking until Effie gently reminds him. After that, there's a in no way shape or form small list of songs that Peeta is banned from playing within earshot of a even semi-conscious Haymitch. All is well again until Katniss discovers Hoizer.)
