A story of Kevin Hayes Li
If living means striving for the best for the future, is it true that Kevin Hayes has been dead for so long? Shadows of his past still clung to him whether he was around coffee, tea, or even books that he had read again and again. Even if he did everything he could to distract himself by doing random work all over the place, everything would still be visible. Time and again.
Even when Seraphina made it to the college’s beauty pageant. The magnificence of the floodlights and the camera flash constantly focusing on Seraphina have a glimpse into his past. About how his big birthday bash at Marina Sands Bay piqued the public’s interest. Thousands upon thousands of commentaries and debates merge into one, but that was what he enjoyed—the life that Kevin Hayes Li once enjoyed.
“You don’t look happy?”
A quiet voice interrupted his echo. There were a lot of blooms in her hands. Her eyes sparkled more brightly than the crown on top of her head could ever hope to match.
“What you mean? I’m happy.”
“Work?”
“Not a bit.”
“The past?”
“Your beauty allows me to forget everything.”
“Buaya!”
Not at all, Sera. He was telling the truth. All of his anger and pain from the past vanished the moment he met you. You have the power to brighten the day even more than the bouquet of flowers you in your hands. You are everything he wishes to keep for his forever.
Kevin assisted Seraphina with her belongings, loaded them into the car, and drove her home. Yes, it wasn’t his car. His monthly salary was barely enough to cover his family’s basic needs. Instead of buying a car, he preferred to set aside the money to have quality time with Seraphina. Sometimes it’s books he’s been meaning to get his hands on.
Seraphina was babbling away because she was the oldest participant and found it hard enough to talk to the younger. When others got close to liking the same idol, she got to talk with all of them because they wanted to know what it was like to be her age. In particular, they wanted to know if the quarter-life crisis had also struck a lady with million privileges who had made good use of them.
“And your answer?”
“Of course, yes. Many of the things I actually feel stress me out more than my doubts. I question every step I take, my past. I’m not sure what kind of project I’m working on. Not even sure what kind of relationship is bonding..” she was silent for a moment, “..me.”
The car was only filled with songs that were deliberately turned on to break the silence. Seraphina, who is always bubbling around Kevin, suddenly regrets what she said to the lad she thought was just focused in the street. There was no reaction from him, and it was another guess that didn’t go wrong.
They were enveloped in total silence until they reached Seraphina’s house. The house isn’t so big yet there’s people who are very warm to each other. Kevin Hayes could never be able to feel it again. The warmth. Completeness.
All belonged to a lady who was busy hauling her own luggage out of the trunk, as if a man nearby would not assist her in any way.
He immediately offered assistance by lifting her suitcase. Didn’t forget the few bouquets she snatched at the sight. She’s moping. Kevin was well aware of this. He also knew that what she was saying wasn’t just meant to be heard, but also responded to. It’s just that he couldn’t think of anything to say when he realised they were in different worlds. Seraphina lived in a warm, crowded world, whereas Kevin lived in a lonely, cold one. He believed that what connected their worlds was simply impossibleness.
There was no wave or goodbye like she usually gave Kevin. Seraphina grabbed the car keys and walked away from him, oblivious to the fact that he was still standing in front of her fence.
“See you tomorrow, my love.”
Seraphina then turned to Kevin with widened eyes, a mixture of surprise and curiosity evident in her expression. Kevin, with both hands in his trouser pockets, only smiled, which also made Seraphina smile slightly.
“See you, love.”

THE WORDS OF ALL WITNESSED
Hello, this is KARLIEM speaking as the author of Kevin Hayes and Euro Assegaf.
This is the area where the entire—both Kevin and Euro’s—story is chronologically organized. of course, it’s not complete yet; each time, there is much more to the level (hopefully). This is basically an archive (of stories and fun), so that I don’t become perplexed. However, if you wish to read them, I’d be grateful.
Thank you.

A story of Euro Meilyr
TW / harsh words
Jakarta, 2022
Exactly what will happen in the future is impossible to say. To a reasonable degree of accuracy, no formula exists for foreseeing the future. The uncertainty is the mysteries that separates the two groups: 1. Those who are eager to make preparations. 2. “Let God’s plan remain a secret. We will take another breath today.”
Whichever side is better or more logical, it appeared that these people were also divided, after parting from a good morning that was met with a good night—and vice versa.
“Ro, lu nggak selamanya muda. Nggak selamanya hidup dari uang orang tua lu. They’re getting old, Savannah and Brooklyn will have their own family. Lu juga, masa mau berkelana terus?”
She continued her chatter, but all she got in response was a drawn-out sigh. The one woman he could go to for refuge from his worries about turns out to be just like everyone else. Everything is subject to change over time. All living things are included, including humans. Some sort of mindset.
The noise of two three cars broke the silence. Rows of street food became a diversion for Euro as they attracted a large number of people who came to satisfy their appetites or simply waste money. Even so, his silence didn’t mean he was ignoring the woman next to him; he was just thinking about how to respond to her without making a scene.
“Denger gua nggak, sih? Capek dah.”
“I’m all ears, dearest cousin.”
“Bacot!” She slumped back into the seat and sipped the coffee she had purchased, frowning. “Gua peduliin lu, Ro. Keluarga kita yang lain juga.”
“Itu namanya ikut campur nggak, sih?”
He was about at his wit’s end with patience. He even closed his eyes for seconds to calm himself.
Tsamaine could feel emotions welling up and wafting from the vanes of his lips. But what her cousin did next might make her frown and parted her lips.
“Kalau peduli itu, gini,” Euro took a single white with three in it from Tsamaine's tiny bag. “Ekhem, ‘Peringatan! Karena merokok saya terkena kanker tenggorokan’.
Tsamaine then took possession of the pack and threw it out the car. What Tsamaine dreaded most was the moment Euro realised she was still smoking. She used to only smoke as an escape. Some might even say she was addicted. In spite of this, she’s just unable to show it openly because of social stigma: 𝘊𝘦𝘸𝘦 𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘬𝘰𝘬 𝘵𝘶𝘩 𝘤𝘦𝘸𝘦 𝘯𝘢𝘬𝘢𝘭.
Euro sighed, wanting to express his frustration at the fact that Tsamaine was still smoking. But he was aware that the current topic was not the cigarette, but him.
“This is my life,” his voice was low, evidently still trying to calm himself down.
“I’m not Savannah or Brooklyn yang suka dunia kesehatan dan tahu mau lakuin apa di hidup mereka. I can’t design. Gua juga nggak punya bakat jualan. Gua—”
“But you do like travelling.”
“Ya.” His eyes fixed on Tsamaine’s intensely. He knew exactly where Tsamaine was going to take their conversation.
“Jangan bilang vlog atau tawaran itu, Mai. Gua nggak mau kerja. Ribet. Selama keluarga gua okay, ya it’s fine.”
As Tsamaine took a deep breath, he heard it. As clearly as he could, she was still babbling something utterly incoherent, and he sensed every word of it. A sense of surrender must inevitably erode everything, unfortunately.
“Terserah. Gua cuma ingetin.”
“Thank you, Mai.”
𝘖𝘩, 𝘥𝘢𝘮.
Really, it’s not like he never gives any thought to his future. He’s just hesitant about his decision. The future will play out in whichever way one decides. They will link themselves in thousands of ways. All he had to do was make a decision—and he's never ready to make a decision for something that is serious, rapidly changing, abstract, and potentially off course.
Not again.

A story of Kevin Hayes Li
IF SERIES: UNEXPECTED GUEST (English ver.)
Nobody knows what the future holds. The fate that is supposed to have been predetermined from the beginning would only be a divine secret that is so incomprehensible, abstract, and insane. God is, indeed, a genius. The owner of the best pen for creating stories for His servants. As God scripted the story of the boy who once said he was born in luck and riches, locked in a hazy path for the rest of his forever.
Still remembering how he had to force a smile to please customers, the combo of margarine and vanilla has replaced smoke and caffeine as his morning and nighttime companions. To be honest, he wasn't used to it yet. But he knew it best; he couldn't fight his fate. A new road that God has carved out for him, another path that he must take… by force. The result of unpleasant moments. That cursed rat. Bitter. Stink. As expected, he held a grudge. But he was too preoccupied with flour-things he didn't fully comprehend, asking for assistance here and there to maximise his work, and admiring the beauty of the Wynstelle Valley.
He sat in the corner of the room, next to a peace lily pot. As the plant is said to represent purity, peace lily can also convey a sense of quiet and tranquility to the interior. Kevin believes in odds gleaned from a few travellers he met years ago. So, perhaps, he constantly carried one of the old books and knelt there to study its contents. He often looks at the words the writer uses to improve his ability to speak other languages.
One, two, sixteen, dozens of sheets have been wafting through the air amidst the customers rushing for sweets and their co-workers vying to provide the best service. It wasn't that he didn't care, he wasn't aware. He was already deeply immersed in the Indonesian mysteries contained in the book. Everything else was useless except a gentle pat on the shoulder or an audible bang that shook him out of his reverie. It seemed his new friends at Petiteserrie didn't know that yet. But one of the customers did.
"You're a nerd now?"
His heart stopped pounding as he noticed those eyes with long eyelashes. The brown and beige tones on the eyelids give the sense of a deep impression. The lad who smelled of flour, margarine, and vanilla drew extra attention to a slight smile that either signified sincerity or contempt. She was subjected to a thorough physical examination by him, from head to toe. Kevin sprang up, wide-eyed and with slightly parted lips—astonished.
“Emma?” His whisper reaped the raised eyebrows of the woman in front of him. "Why?”
"Why? Prettier?”
Emma intended to make a joke and hoped Kevin would chuckle a little. In truth, he remained frozen. Everything that happened between them played out in his thoughts like a movie. Annoying.
She noticed that his trousers had a powder stain, something brown smudged on his shirt, and something blue that looked just like the cake on her tray. Kevin really catched something on her, from his clean, white sneakers to his specs. She squealed with delight, "Oh, Kevin Li. You seriously work here?”
The first arrow pierced after so many years.
"Are you the Kevin Li I know?"
The second one was shot, as he predicted.
“You never do.”
"Oh, come on," Emma hissed as she placed the tray on the table. It was the same as it always was: she fell on Kevin's sharpness. He stayed quiet, expressionless. Even in the back of his mind, he imagined dragging Emma out of Petiteserrie. "Where has the prince gone?"
Kevin has always avoided this topic for the past few years. He was aware that continuing the conversation would elicit strong emotions from him. Heat began to rise in his cheeks, and he could feel his blood racing quicker throughout his body. If he didn't think about the position—right now, he'd either leave Emma or haul Emma out for real.
"You love cupcakes," he said, his lips slightly lifted. "Come. Cupcakes are one of the most popular here."
"Did you actually get thrown out of college, or did you drop out on purpose because of economics?"
His privacy had been stripped, and he'd run out of patience. Does the fact that Kevin isn't the sort to immediately blurt out his wrath mean that his emotions can be tricked? Or was she trying to get the attention of him who had his gaze firmly locked on her? Both he and his eyes—gaze had remained untouched by the passage of time. Just.. it was not a word of love anymore.
His rage was bubbling over, but he was able to take a deep breath and exhale slowly. She's a customer. She's a customer. Kevin held the spell inside himself, attempting to remain cool and sensible.
"Look, newly fresh bread. If you..”
"Don't you long for Singapore, Kevin? I heard you've been riding your bicycle around for work?"
Kevin took a tray that had been nothing but useless to Emma. He neatly wrapped and handed it to Emma soon after. Emma, who had known Kevin for years, understood how her ex-boyfriend acted when he was angry; he simply stopped talking and acted solely on his own volition. Emma frowned at Kevin, but he seemed unfazed. Instead, he strolled right up to the exits, her stare wide with the realisation that he actually intended to kick her out.
"If you come to try all the delicacies or even eat my odd experiments, I would gladly clean that chair for you," said he, pointing to his favourite spot. "However, if you come to talk about my past and make fun or probe into my life, I apologise. Just squander your time kissing and straddling another wealthy man, as you always did.”
Maybe Kevin appeared nuts because of his choice of words and his audacity to kick out a customer. But he wasn’t crazy enough for a cunning ex-girlfriend who tried to make fun of his life, right? Perhaps it's just because she's Esmae Chen, one of the rats who destroyed his family's existence.
This teen romance had a tale to match its briefness and brightness, and it was just as wonderful and romantic as the rest. There came a cliché portrait of a couple going arm in arm to purchase ice cream, and when Kevin showed Emma a glimpse of his paper test because she wasn't very good at counting. Everything appeared to be in perfect harmony. Those memories, however, were not strong enough to make Kevin halt.
“Kevin Li, you know..”
“Please,” He stopped speaking and instantly opened the door for Emma. A heavy stride she had to drag, and a sharp surge of hatred blazed from her ex's eyelids. Kevin's eyes were still the ones she feared and adored; the most capable of breaking through any stronghold; the most eager to possess anyone's mind—and body. Anyone's blood would boil and go limp at the same time at the sight of such eyes. Sounds hyperbolic, indeed, but Emma would never be able to deny it.
One rat flew out of the store with a pursed lip and a withered tail. Sadly, her urge to talk, gnaw at sweetness, and dig up ‘knowledge’ ran aground due to piercing eyes. Kevin was relieved as he shut the door and began to worry. If his bosses regard Emma as a valuable customer, he should be prepared to face the repercussions. But, if they share the same brain cells and genuinely side with Kevin, a bottle of champagne would be sufficient to polish the surface of his somewhat nicked day.

A story of Kevin Hayes Li
IF SERIES: UNEXPECTED GUEST (Bahasa Indonesia Ver.)
Tapi salah seorang pelanggan mengetahuinya.
“You’re a nerd now?”
Panah pertama setelah sekian tahun menusuk.
“Apakah kamu Kevin Hayes Li yang aku kenal?”
Panah kedua melesat begitu cepat, namun Kevin sudah memprediksikannya.
“Kamu tidak pernah mengenalku.”
“Oh, come on,” Emma menaruh nampan di atas meja. Matanya menatap milik Kevin tajam sebagaimana Emma selalu melakukannya dulu. Kevin diam, memasang wajah datar. “Where’s the prince gone?”
“Kamu suka cupcakes,” Sudut bibirnya sedikit terangkat. “Mari.
“Kevin Li, you know..”
