I'm an island girl at heart. I need to be near the ocean! I was raised on the shores of a pacific island called Tongatapu and that's where I draw much of my inspiration from when im creating. www.etsy.com/au/shop/HayleyEganJewellery

C is for Cecaelia Chandelier, Crystal Chandelier, and Cherry blossom! ... 3 photos for every letter of the alphabet! Im having fun with this. A Cecaelia is a mythical creature that is part human part octopus. I made this Cecaelia Chandelier for my solo 2017 lighting exhibition as well as the Swarovski Crystal leafy Chandelier. Both pieces sold to clients that attended my exhibition. The client that purchased the Crystal Chandelier added it to her whimsical bedroom with the hand painted Cherry Blossom on silver leaf mural I had worked on a few years before. . . . . . . . . #art #artistoninstagram #artist #sculptor #sculpture #handmade #handcrafted #bespoke #bespokeinteriors #interiordesign #sydneyinteriordesign #lightinginstallation #lamploversoftheworldunite #lightingdesign #designerlighting #sculpting #portfolio #octopus #cecaelia #swarovski #chandelier #cherryblossom #luxuryinteriors

Honey Bee on native Scale Broom by Marc Kummel Via Flickr: This is a Honey Bee (Apis mellifera, Hymenoptera) working the flowers of native Scale Broom (Lepidospartum squamatum, Asteraceae) growing along Stagecoach Road in the mountains. The flower is an odd one to find at this time of year in the mountains, see this photo for some discussion. I don’t usually photograph Honey Bees, but all insects are scarce right now - I was happy to find this one. Did you realize that bees have such hairy eyes? This photo also shows the bee’s rear, so HBBBT! (San Marcos Pass, 15 December 2017)

Gliding in from Costa Rica comes a moderately large, moderately green bee.
An Agapostemon nasutus.
There are a lot of the these bright green bees out there…Not just in C.R. but throughout the Americas. Beautiful, and once you start paying attention, quite common. But are there any songs written about them? No. Poems? Zero. Green Bee Secret Societies? Nope. This just seems wrong. Sorry, its late at night and am feeling the breath of native bee injustice. This series was taken by Kelly Graninger and Anders Croft. The bee, collected by our own Tim McMahon.

Native bees have varied life styles, the places they frequent, the nests they build, the flowers they visit, and their season of activity.

Bees Trained to Collect Gold Dust
In the Upper Congo past gold mining’s legacy left a moonscape of large and small open pits. Some of these pits date to the turn of the previous century. These historical gold ore extractions were notably inefficient leaving behind small, but significant, amounts of gold dust hidden amidst vast acreages of mining spoil.
Enter the trained bees.
The Native Bee Laboratory, in a unique public / private partnership with the Gold Consortium, has trained bees to detect and retrieve the globular gold dust found in these former mines. As can be seen in this picture of a typical Golden Bee nest, these animals can be extremely effective little “gold diggers”.
Future plans call for programming these bees to not only gather gold, but to perform the actual transmutation of in situ cupprous outcroppings into gold or near gold. Such opportunities, where no opportunities previously existed, allow micro-fabrication and bio-diversification within such small spaces that individual agents (e.g., paleofarmers and septuagenarians) could reap the rewards that opportunity vacuums were formerly devoid of. Available now from Dr. Joe Wilson, author of ‘The Bees In Your Backyard. A Field Guide to the Bees of North America’ (2015) Princeton University Press. Think about and learn about native bees everyday with this poster on your wall, in your classroom, etc. The book is highly recommended.

B for Blue Banded Bee!
One of my favourite assignments from this recent lot, where we had to use our initial and create a ‘logo’ by pairing it with an Australian native starting with the same letter!

Laura Russo collected these lovely squash bees (Peponapis pruinosa) near State College, Pennsylvania. Aptly named, this bee only feeds its young on the pollen of Cucurbita (pumpkins, squash, gourds and the like). This plant genus is native to the hemisphere….peaking in numbers in the Mexican highlands, but does not occur naturally in Pennsylvania (too cold). However because we keep planting pumpkins and squash each year, our squash bee friends are sustained, and probably have been since Indians brought squash into the area many centuries ago.
Which is a good thing since they are very effective pollinators given that they are out at dawn (when almost no other bees are out) and active until squash plants close their blooms around 9 a.m. They are tight like ticks with Curcubits.
