Why Food Restriction is Not the Answer for Weight Loss
Let me be clear from the start. Restriction of all foods does NOT result in longterm weight loss. Rather, focusing on reducing unhealthy foods, WHILE increasing healthy, nutrient dense foods, is the answer. Allow me to explain... Weight loss is often seen as a process of restriction – cutting calories, avoiding certain types of food, or limiting intake in some other way. However, this approach is not only unsustainable, it can also be unhealthy and even dangerous. Instead of focusing on restriction, it is important to shift our mindset and approach weight loss from a place of healthy choices and consistency. This means making informed decisions about what we eat and drink, and being mindful of the balance of nutrients in our diet. It is also important to remember that weight loss is not just about the food we eat, but also about how we move our bodies. Incorporating physical activity into our daily routine, whether it be through structured workouts or simply walking more, can help us achieve and maintain a healthy weight. Of course, there are medical weight loss products and services available that can be helpful in achieving weight loss goals. However, it is important to use these tools in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle, rather than relying solely on them to achieve results. We will be adding more here, so please check back often. - Resources (free downloads: track-sheet, manuscript PDF and Audiobook Mp3) - Help and Support: 3 Reliable Options   The Protocol The Hcg protocol consists of 3 phases, with a newer 4th phase that has been added to the original protocol, being coined as P4, "longterm maintenance."  Each phase is extremely important and should not be skipped.   The Loading Phase (P1) is 2 (in some cases, 3 days,) while Phase 2, the weight loss phase, can vary in length depending on your protocol's specifics.   For example, one Hcg source's protocol can differ from another such as 26 days or 29 days. Phase 3, the Transition Phase, lasts 3 weeks and is an expansion of increased calories and foods that do not include any sugars or starches.   The 4th phase refers to life after the diet's first 3 phases and includes a lifestyle of healthy choices learned while on the protocol.  This includes exercise, portion control, clean eating and healthy living in general. - Hcg Diet Protocol Basics - All Hcg Plans and Protocols (The original protocol vs. alternative and modern protocols.) - All About Hcg Diet Foods and Eating - Hcg Diet and Exercise   The 4 Phases The protocol consists of separate phases. Together, they are referred to as a "round."  Dieter's typically lose 18 to 25 lbs per round (approximately 1 month.)  If more weight is needed to be lost, there is a 3 week break after the final phase, and then another round is started.   Rinse and repeat until goal weight is reached.  Note on protocol variations: Some protocols actually include 3 and 4 as the same "Maintenance phase" and have only 3 phases total. Other protocols, including Dr. Simeons Original protocol, do not include phase 1, loading phase.   This can be a personal preference, however we will say that the following phase example, has shown great results from our readers, and has certainly appeared to be the most successful. 1. Phase 1 - Loading Phase 1 is the loading phase. Also known as the preparation phase.  This phase is not on all HCG protocols but it is on most and is very popular.  During this two day phase, the dieter eats as much healthy fats as possible in preparation for starting the next phase.   They are also welcome to eat as many "cheat" foods as they would like, with the intention of satisfying cravings prior to beginning the next phase where these foods will not be allowed. This begins on day 3 of taking HCG where the dieter adheres to a specified calorie intake and carefully selected food list. Phase 3 - Transition Phase 3 of the diet is at the end of  HCG is discontinued and the same foods from phase 2 are still eaten, but increased slowly.  In this stage, this is a reintroduction period where calories and foods are slowly adjusted to maintain weight loss. It is important to understand that while the Hcg hormone does NOT make you lose weight, it does change how your body loses weight, and creates a reaction in your body that allows for the rapid weight loss.   It is the carefully selected foods (see official list here (& don't forget to bookmark!) that is responsible for your weight loss; the Hcg just allows your body to continue to burn fat when it would normally go into starvation mode under the calorie restricted diet. This is good news! This means the Hcg weight loss plan can be surprisingly versatile with the right recipes, and can work with any number of menus, foods sensitivities.  The allowed foods are clear of processed and prepared foods and carefully measured for portion control. Instead of processed foods, the food list focuses on clean eating, and consists mostly of vegetables and healthy portions of lean protein, along with some, but limited, carbohydrates. To be clear, this is NOT a ketosis diet when done correctly, and in fact the amount of vegetables and fruit permitted, do not allow the body to go into ketosis.   Compared to ketosis diets, this particular approach has been shown to average much higher weight loss rates that range from .5 to 1.5 pounds per day. In a nutshell: The diet's strict eating guidelines focus on portion control, increased vegetables and proteins, and a food list that is comprised of clean, unprocessed foods. The Original protocol is known for its restrictive and unforgiving 500 calorie VLCD (very low calorie diet.)  Some versions of the diet have evolved to allow for an expanded food list. Original HCG 500 Calorie Diet with Sample Menu (VLCD)

The original Hcg Diet includes a 500 calorie menu, or "VLCD" (very low calorie diet) as outlined by Dr. Simeons in his Manuscript, Pounds and Inches.  This menu includes a very specific list of allowed foods, along with eating guidelines that are meant to be followed precisely.   The Original 500 Calorie Diet Menu (VLCD) Breakfast: - Tea or coffee in any quantity without sugar. Only one tablespoonful of milk allowed in 24 hours. Saccharin or Stevia may be used. Lunch: - 100 grams of veal, beef, chicken breast, fresh white fish, lobster, crab, or shrimp. All visible fat must be carefully removed before cooking, and the meat must be weighed raw. It must be boiled or grilled without additional fat. Salmon, eel, tuna, herring, dried or pickled fish are not allowed. The chicken breast must be removed from the bird. - One type of vegetable only to be chosen from the following: spinach, chard, chicory, beet-greens, green salad, tomatoes, celery, fennel, onions, red radishes, cucumbers, asparagus, cabbage. - One breadstick (grissino) or one Melba toast. - An apple, orange, or a handful of strawberries or one-half grapefruit. Dinner: - The same four choices as lunch (above.)     What can I eat on the 500 calorie menu?   The list of allowed foods on the Hcg Diet includes: 100 grams of protein from veal, beef, chicken breast, fresh white fish, lobster, crab (no imitation crab) or shrimp. The guidelines on this page will refer to that protocol and its 500 calorie menu. Seasonings permitted on the HCG diet based on Dr Simeons own protocol as written in Pounds and Inches:The juice of one lemon daily is allowed for all purposes. Salt, pepper, vinegar, mustard powder, garlic, sweet basil, parsley, thyme, majoram, etc., may be used for seasoning, but no oil, butter or dressing. All seasonings and spices are welcome on the original protocol, which makes it easy to modify and create a variety of delicious recipes. This is also a great way to mix vegetables without going off-protocol; dried vegetables as seasoning and spices such as onion, are permitted. For more information, see our vegetable guide. Drinks on the Hcg Diet Tea, coffee, plain water, or mineral water (2 liters of water per day is recommended) are the only drinks allowed, but they may be taken in any quantity and at all times. There is no limit as to how much tea and coffee that can be drank on the diet, however it is important to avoid all sugars, and limit sweeteners as much as possible. Sweeteners have been shown to have effects on the body's hormone system and while they may not have an effect in small amounts, studies show larger intake of artificial sweeteners can wreak havoc on the metabolism as well as cause stalls during Phase 2 of the Hcg Diet.  One particular sweetener to avoid is aspartame. Take care to read labels on beverages that may have these listed in their ingredients. Can I drink Diet Soda on the Hcg Diet? Diet sodas are not recommended on the protocol for a number of reasons.  The ingredients often include chemicals, sodium and artificial sweeteners that can effect loss rates, or cause stalls. In addition, this is a good time to cleanse the cravings and addictions for these products, and allow those chemicals to be removed from the body. As an added suggestion, you can try sparkling flavored water without aspartame, or sugar free sodas made with xylitol IN MODERATION (in this case, not every day.)  Sugar, aspartame and sweeteners in general, should be avoided.  Xylitol, stevia, and erythritol may be used on occasion if necessary. Snacks on the Hcg Diet The fruit or the bread stick may be eaten between meals instead of with lunch or dinner,Apples are the most highly recommended "snack food" for the Hcg Diet. Remember to keep the size to medium, vs large, as outlined in the original 500 calorie protocol. For variety, these can be sprinkled with cinnamon which also happens to be a metabolism booster. Regarding the allowed breadstick or grissini, please remember to check labels and do NOT consider restaurant breadsticks as an option. Breadsticks purchased in the store can be as little as 10 calories, while those in restaurants can be as high as 400 calories for one serving. Can I substitute 2 small apples for 1 allowed apple serving? 2 small apples are not an acceptable exchange for “1 apple.” This is a commonly asked question, and while Dr. Simeons defined a firm "no" as the answer, HOWEVER, modern protocols have found this to be a reasonable exchange. Mixing Foods from the 500 Calorie list "...but not more than than four items listed for lunch and dinner may be eaten at one meal." Remember to stick to this rule, particularly with proteins, fruits and the allowed breadstick or grissini. For example, do not eat half of a portion of fish and half of a portion of chicken. Mixing vegetables: While Dr. Simeons protocol allows mixing the allowed salad greens, he also says mixing vegetables is not permitted. HOWEVER, many dieters have no problems when combining vegetables from the allowed foods list. If you decide to mix vegetables, proceed with caution and watch for any reduction in loss rates before continuing. Hcg Diet Food Substitutions: Eggs and Cottage Cheese"Very occasionally we allow egg - boiled, poached or raw - to patients who develop an aversion to meat, but in this case they must add the white of three eggs to the one they eat whole. Cottage cheese made from skimmed milk is available 100 grams may occasionally be used instead of the meat" Can I have eggs on the Hcg diet?  Yes, eggs are allowed on the original 500 calorie menu of the Hcg Diet plan. Eggs can be boiled, poached or raw, according to the original protocol, and counts as 1 protein serving. Modern variations of the diet allow eggs cooked in any form, as long as they are not prepared with butter or oils. In addition, it is advised to stick with egg whites, over the whole egg whenever possible. Is Cottage cheese allowed on the Hcg Diet? Cottage cheese is permitted on the list of approved Hcg foods, again as an exchange for 1 protein serving. Full fat cottage cheese is not permitted. Only non fat cottage cheese is allowed. Vegetarian Hcg Diet Substitutions - Both eggs and cottage cheese can be particularly useful protein substitutions for the Vegetarian Hcg Diet Plan. Specially Prepared Unsweetened, Low Calorie Foods In many countries specially prepared unsweetened and low calorie foods are freely available, and some of these can be tentatively used... the total daily intake must not exceed 500 Calories if the best possible results are to be obtained, that the daily ration should contain 200 grams of fat-free protein and a very small amount of starch.This is a commonly overlooked option from Dr. Simeons. It can also lead to the crucial mistake of adding the wrong "low calorie foods" to the options for what to eat. As a general rule, remember to avoid processed foods, all sugars that do not come from the allowed fruits on the 500 calorie menu, and any prepackaged foods that may have added ingredients that can effect loss rates.  To play it safe, stick to "whole foods" that are on the original Hcg Diet list of allowed foods. Tips for those 500 Calorie Days - Go ahead and have two meals per day, instead of 3 and skip the snacks if you are not hungry. - Drink A LOT OF WATER. This is absolutely essential to weight loss and nothing will cause a Hcg weight loss stall faster than dehydration. In fact, having enough water can also help avoid false cravings and hunger. More importantly, your body needs adequate water (usually far more than you would think) to function properly and process foods etc. - Plan ahead! Know what you will be eating and when. What kinds of foods are allowed on most Hcg lists (original and modern variations)? The 500 calorie menu was designed for "Phase 2" of the Hcg Diet plan; the weight loss phase. Jen's Semiglutide Review (My Pro Experience: 10+ lbs. Gone W/Out Dieting)

If you've been following my medical weight loss blog over the last 15 years here, you know I've tested and researched every option available. I know what works, what doesn't work... how they work, who they are suited for, and what results can be expected. I usually have low expectations for the weight loss meds that hit the market today... I often feel they are headed in the wrong direction and often have disturbing side effects (hello Xenical.) That said, I was intrigued when I started the research into Semaglutide (Wagovy) and was almost tempted to have high hopes when I learned the FDA had approved it for weight loss. Skipping ahead, I'll tell you now that the research was impressive, the statistics were impressive, and my experience with my first round was beyond impressive; over 10 lbs lost effortlessly and without any unexpected challenges other than food backing up in my fridge that I simply couldn't eat. What is Semaglutide? Semaglutide is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. That's fancy science talk for a prescription medication that controls blood sugar. It has been used successfully for years, to lower the risk of stroke, heart attack, and even death, in patients with type 2 diabetes, heart disease and blood vessel disease. A beneficial side effect of Semaglutide in these cases, has been weight loss. And now, it has been officially approved by the FDA for this purpose. I'll add that this is the first prescription medication the FDA has deemed acceptable for this purpose since 2014. My First Round with Semaglutide (10+ lbs lost, without diet or exercise) As my readers know, I never discuss a fitness or weight loss medication without trying it myself. That is exactly what I did here. In recent years, I've been successful with various peptides and lipotropics to maintain my weight loss from hCG years prior. In recent years, I opted not to use hCG; the challenging protocol simply does not work with my lifestyle requirements at the moment (um, single Mom that feels the urge to exercise and eat foods and have rare wine nights with the girls- things that simply aren't allowed on that protocol.) So, obviously I was intrigued by a new option that would allow me to eat, drink and be merry, and still lose weight. In all honesty, that is exactly what happened. I am now on my 6th week with semaglutide. Last week, I weighed myself and had lost 10.4 lbs. I deliberately did the following to test the reports of this med: - I did NOT watch what I ate. In fact, I ate out a LOT (my sweetheart is an extreme foodie) including a holiday in Napa where we tried half a dozen fine dining establishments and endless wine tastings. I did not hold back, folks! - I did NOT exercise. I love to move, but for the purposes of this review, I deliberately avoided the gym, didn't go for walks, and even took a break from yoga. Now mind you, these are not only permitted but encouraged while taking Semaglutide, I simply wanted to see what the results would be with and without these efforts. Dosage Details Going through My Diet Doc, their semaglutide protocol starts patients with .25iu for several weeks before increasing to .50. I found this to be a good approach, considering a major complaint from patients is extreme nausea and racing heartbeat or palpitations, when immediately started with a higher dose. In fact, it's common for Semaglutide to be prescribed with an anti-nausea medicine because of this. Personally, I prefer the slow but steady route and not wanting to lay in bed feeling ill, and struggling to keep down what little food I'm eating. Day by Day Day 1-3: I began by injecting .25 of Semaglutide, as a subcutanous injection in the belly as instructed. Normally, I prefer subq injections in the hip, but decided to follow the doctor's exact protocol, so I could share exactly what others can expect. (Spoiler alert: The 2nd week, I injected in the back hip as I prefer, felt absolutely no difference, and obviously this did not influence my results.) How I felt: I wasn't expecting to feel much... but several hours after my first injection, I felt a 'buzz' effect, almost like I had caffeine. It was extremely mild; I don't usually drink caffeine or stimulants of any kind, so I tend to be sensitive and notice these things quickly. Day 3-6: My appetite was not "gone" but definitely different. I began noticing it took me longer to feel hungry than usual, and actually forgot to eat when I normally do. Day 6-7. I still feel that pep, although it's still mild. I notice a significant difference in my appetite and my what my tastebuds are reporting. I normally am ravenous by lunchtime... I forgot to eat lunch today. I noticed that my hunger signals are faint. I still feel hungry at times, but it is never a strong urge to eat something... which has made my food choices much wiser. I'm not starving, so there is no need to grab a handful of my son's peanut butter crackers for a fast hunger fix. Overall Experience The changes happened slowly, but doing regular "check-ins" to consciously monitor my experience, I realized that there were BIG CHANGES. - Most notably, it took significantly longer for my food to digest, leaving me feeling full for incredibly long periods. For example, for our anniversary, my Sweety booked an amazing dinner at a 5 start restaurant, including a 12 course meal of a few tiny bites each. (Did I mention he's a foodie?) It was some of the most amazing food I have ever had in my life! And I couldn't eat it all!!!! Halfway through, I felt so stuffed, I thought I was going to burst. I had to start letting him finish my courses and by the last few, it was all I could do to taste the food but not actually have a full bite. Such a pity. - My appetite signals were faint and different. This one is hard to describe. I would still feel hungry, and could recognize when I was extremely hungry... but it still would not feel urgent to eat. This was great for me, since I'm a busy mom; there wasn't such a need for convenience foods, but instead, I could take time and make wiser food decisions. Instead of grabbing something quick, I could actually wait, and make something healthier. - My cravings vanished and while I would still have and enjoy something sweet, it didn't have the same magnetism as before. This made it easier to pass on foods, or simply have 1 cookie instead of a handful of them. Semaglutide Cost It's worth saying that while Semaglutide is not cheap, what I saved in my food bill, significantly improved the value in my book. While to me, my health is worth this investment, it was nice to have a food expense that was several hundred dollars cheaper than prior months. You can find the current cost of Semaglutide here. Tips for Semaglutide Rounds Here are a few things I wish I would have known prior to starting my round. - I wouldn't stock up on groceries. My appetite steadily declined with each passing day, as well as how much food I could consume at each. meal. I very quickly ended up with a surplus of food in my fridge, which I had to pass along so it woudn't be wasted. - Ask a few extra questions ahead of time. I had done enough research that I was comfortable with the the medication and protocol from the start, but a friend who started at the same time as me, had a significant amount of questions from the moment her RX arrived at her door. She had questions regarding side effects, injection options, etc. I suggest thinking ahead and asking questions during your initial talk with the doctor. - Keep your care coordinator's contact info on hand. This will be sent in your confirmation email. I recommend putting it in your phone, should you have questions. - Ease up on the exercise at the start while your body adjusts to the medication. - Remember to eat, even when your appetite begins to fade. This is really important, and it also gives you an opportunity to start retraining those hunger signals. - Make sure you are not losing weight. too fast. Slower results = longterm results. Jen's Semiglutide Review (My Pro Experience: 10+ lbs. Gone W/Out Dieting)

If you've been following my medical weight loss blog over the last 15 years here, you know I've tested and researched every option available. I know what works, what doesn't work... how they work, who they are suited for, and what results can be expected. I usually have low expectations for the weight loss meds that hit the market today... I often feel they are headed in the wrong direction and often have disturbing side effects (hello Xenical.) That said, I was intrigued when I started the research into Semaglutide (Wagovy) and was almost tempted to have high hopes when I learned the FDA had approved it for weight loss. Skipping ahead, I'll tell you now that the research was impressive, the statistics were impressive, and my experience with my first round was beyond impressive; over 10 lbs lost effortlessly and without any unexpected challenges other than food backing up in my fridge that I simply couldn't eat. What is Semaglutide? Semaglutide is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. That's fancy science talk for a prescription medication that controls blood sugar. It has been used successfully for years, to lower the risk of stroke, heart attack, and even death, in patients with type 2 diabetes, heart disease and blood vessel disease. A beneficial side effect of Semaglutide in these cases, has been weight loss. And now, it has been officially approved by the FDA for this purpose. I'll add that this is the first prescription medication the FDA has deemed acceptable for this purpose since 2014. My First Round with Semaglutide (10+ lbs lost, without diet or exercise) As my readers know, I never discuss a fitness or weight loss medication without trying it myself. That is exactly what I did here. In recent years, I've been successful with various peptides and lipotropics to maintain my weight loss from hCG years prior. In recent years, I opted not to use hCG; the challenging protocol simply does not work with my lifestyle requirements at the moment (um, single Mom that feels the urge to exercise and eat foods and have rare wine nights with the girls- things that simply aren't allowed on that protocol.) So, obviously I was intrigued by a new option that would allow me to eat, drink and be merry, and still lose weight. In all honesty, that is exactly what happened. I am now on my 6th week with semaglutide. Last week, I weighed myself and had lost 10.4 lbs. I deliberately did the following to test the reports of this med: - I did NOT watch what I ate. In fact, I ate out a LOT (my sweetheart is an extreme foodie) including a holiday in Napa where we tried half a dozen fine dining establishments and endless wine tastings. I did not hold back, folks! - I did NOT exercise. I love to move, but for the purposes of this review, I deliberately avoided the gym, didn't go for walks, and even took a break from yoga. Now mind you, these are not only permitted but encouraged while taking Semaglutide, I simply wanted to see what the results would be with and without these efforts. Dosage Details Going through My Diet Doc, their semaglutide protocol starts patients with .25iu for several weeks before increasing to .50. I found this to be a good approach, considering a major complaint from patients is extreme nausea and racing heartbeat or palpitations, when immediately started with a higher dose. In fact, it's common for Semaglutide to be prescribed with an anti-nausea medicine because of this. Personally, I prefer the slow but steady route and not wanting to lay in bed feeling ill, and struggling to keep down what little food I'm eating. Day by Day Day 1-3: I began by injecting .25 of Semaglutide, as a subcutanous injection in the belly as instructed. Normally, I prefer subq injections in the hip, but decided to follow the doctor's exact protocol, so I could share exactly what others can expect. (Spoiler alert: The 2nd week, I injected in the back hip as I prefer, felt absolutely no difference, and obviously this did not influence my results.) How I felt: I wasn't expecting to feel much... but several hours after my first injection, I felt a 'buzz' effect, almost like I had caffeine. It was extremely mild; I don't usually drink caffeine or stimulants of any kind, so I tend to be sensitive and notice these things quickly. Day 3-6: My appetite was not "gone" but definitely different. I began noticing it took me longer to feel hungry than usual, and actually forgot to eat when I normally do. Day 6-7. I still feel that pep, although it's still mild. I notice a significant difference in my appetite and my what my tastebuds are reporting. I normally am ravenous by lunchtime... I forgot to eat lunch today. I noticed that my hunger signals are faint. I still feel hungry at times, but it is never a strong urge to eat something... which has made my food choices much wiser. I'm not starving, so there is no need to grab a handful of my son's peanut butter crackers for a fast hunger fix. Overall Experience The changes happened slowly, but doing regular "check-ins" to consciously monitor my experience, I realized that there were BIG CHANGES. - Most notably, it took significantly longer for my food to digest, leaving me feeling full for incredibly long periods. For example, for our anniversary, my Sweety booked an amazing dinner at a 5 start restaurant, including a 12 course meal of a few tiny bites each. (Did I mention he's a foodie?) It was some of the most amazing food I have ever had in my life! And I couldn't eat it all!!!! Halfway through, I felt so stuffed, I thought I was going to burst. I had to start letting him finish my courses and by the last few, it was all I could do to taste the food but not actually have a full bite. Such a pity. - My appetite signals were faint and different. This one is hard to describe. I would still feel hungry, and could recognize when I was extremely hungry... but it still would not feel urgent to eat. This was great for me, since I'm a busy mom; there wasn't such a need for convenience foods, but instead, I could take time and make wiser food decisions. Instead of grabbing something quick, I could actually wait, and make something healthier. - My cravings vanished and while I would still have and enjoy something sweet, it didn't have the same magnetism as before. This made it easier to pass on foods, or simply have 1 cookie instead of a handful of them. Semaglutide Cost It's worth saying that while Semaglutide is not cheap, what I saved in my food bill, significantly improved the value in my book. While to me, my health is worth this investment, it was nice to have a food expense that was several hundred dollars cheaper than prior months. You can find the current cost of Semaglutide here. Tips for Semaglutide Rounds Here are a few things I wish I would have known prior to starting my round. - I wouldn't stock up on groceries. My appetite steadily declined with each passing day, as well as how much food I could consume at each. meal. I very quickly ended up with a surplus of food in my fridge, which I had to pass along so it woudn't be wasted. - Ask a few extra questions ahead of time. I had done enough research that I was comfortable with the the medication and protocol from the start, but a friend who started at the same time as me, had a significant amount of questions from the moment her RX arrived at her door. She had questions regarding side effects, injection options, etc. I suggest thinking ahead and asking questions during your initial talk with the doctor. - Keep your care coordinator's contact info on hand. This will be sent in your confirmation email. I recommend putting it in your phone, should you have questions. - Ease up on the exercise at the start while your body adjusts to the medication. - Remember to eat, even when your appetite begins to fade. This is really important, and it also gives you an opportunity to start retraining those hunger signals. - Make sure you are not losing weight. too fast. Slower results = longterm results.
