Their words are soft, hands trembling as they take a step or two back. They’re distraught, and they can’t get more than those few words out for a few moments, because they understand that their tenth self was a hypocrite, but if this old face that didn’t even know what they’d done couldn’t accept them as them, what are they supposed to do? Who are they supposed to be? 

         No. 

They’re the Doctor– they have to be the Doctor. 

                      ‘I’m you– I’m the Doctor, and that’s all                        that matters, so just– just piss off!’

         “No, you are not.”

   The Doctor followed suit when the other    stepped back, stepping forward to once    again close the gap between them. There    was a kind of fierce determination on his    face. It was almost frightening.

      “You are almost me. You       are almost exactly me. That’s       not a bad thing. You are not       me, you are something more       than I am. 

            Who are you?             What are you?

         I have never seen a thing          like you before. Not in all          my very long life have I          come across something          even slightly like you.”

            “Kill you?”

   His response was snorted, as if he   was genuinely that amused by the   idea. He threw the instrument from   one hand to the other, flipping it.

         “It’s not a weapon, it’s a tool.”

      Typically, he didn’t recognise her.      The Doctor was not, at the best of      times or regenerations, particularly      skilled at remembering human faces,      especially not ones that had aged.      In this particular incarnation, however,      with its eccentricities and trauma,      it was a good day when he could      recall himself. So long on earth, and      Orbis, and so many other worlds...

            He’d forgotten so much.

         Still, he was given pause, although not         until he’d already strolled past her to         the command module and provided the         necessary adjustments to stop the alarm.

   He slowly turned around to face the woman,   a deep furrow setting into his brow as he, for   the first time, appeared to actually see her.

         “Do I know you?”

That question was like a stab to their  (now singular) heart, at least in their mind. The way he’d phrased it; not as a “Are you me?” but more as if he were hoping they weren’t, hurt. Because if their own past self couldn’t accept them as him– how could they possibly hope anyone else could?

              ‘And if I am?’ 

Their reply is clipped, and they cross their arms over their chest defensively, even though there’s a possibility they’re jumping to conclusions about his wording.

      “You feel like me. I see             m y s e l f          when I look at you.

   But I can see something else.    Something not of myself.

         Who are you ? ”

      Perhaps he was being more abrupt       and significantly less delicate than       he could have been, but for what       it was worth, he simply couldn’t       help but feel distraught at whatever       it was he was being faced with. It       was a knee-jerk response, and        unfortunately gave him rather the       appearance of a complete lunatic.

it’s genuinely in the interests of advancing plot (e.g. ‘Pass the screwdriver?’ and you can assume my muse passes the screwdriver over, or even just that your muse ended up with the screwdriver one way or another, without having to stop the reply altogether for my interjection)

it’s NOT my muse’s dialogue, inner or outer

it’s REASONABLE for my muse (e.g. if they’ve already made it quite clear the screwdriver is a sentimentally precious family heirloom or something, then the screwdriver might not reasonably change hands)

the reply isn’t solely about my muse’s actions, thoughts or feelings, but rather is about your muse, with reference to mine

you are willing to accept criticism & critique and change the reply if I can’t reasonably see my muse doing that

roleplaying, for me, is about exploring characters and worlds through story. Interaction with both the muse and the world, then, is vital, and I do not mind sacrificing a small thing from one to significantly advance the other. It’s always a good idea to talk to me if you’re uncertain and it will be easier once we know each other better, but I just wanted to put this out there so you lot know what I’m comfortable with. There’s a lot of ‘no godmodding whatsoever!!’ going around in this community and obviously, with big things, it’s a no-go – but I’m still more interested in the story.
