My lovely friends @iero0 and @drarryruinedme7 informed me that it wasn't too late to claim my HD Remix Fest story, so here it is.

Little Star is 39k and is a remix of Be My Anchor by the very talented @maraudersaffair. That story is terrific and you should go and read it ASAP.

In his desperation, Draco approaches the wrong person and the result is disastrous. Draco is beaten up and left for dead in an alleyway. As Draco hovers between life and death, Harry Potter discovers his bruised and battered body.

The Saviour doesn’t only save Draco’s life. He takes Draco back to Grimmauld Place and helps him to recover.

Of Mirrors, Myths, and Men For @hd-remix 2021 | Rated: E | 5.4k Inspired by Into the Potter-Verse by VeelaWings

Of the many brilliant multiverse worlds of @veelawings’ Into the Potter-Verse, I was most excited for the creature!fic trope—a shared fave with the incredible Noella. Sweet Noella, thank you for your contributions to fandom on an administrative and personal level, and for sharing your gift of writing with us. I hope you enjoy this little tidbit.

After years of renovations on the Manor, Draco has one room left: the Ballroom. Harry Potter’s repair skills come highly recommended. But from the moment Potter stepped foot in the Manor, something burned between them, far more compelling than Draco could have ever anticipated.

“I know how to do many things.” Potter was almost out of line, but Draco didn’t want him to stop. “You said in your query letter that this project was a rush job.”

“It is.” It was like a game. Well, two could play. “And you said that you could accommodate that.”

“I said, ‘pending my in-person assessment and based on how thorough your descriptions were,’ it should be doable within a week.”

“Were my descriptions inaccurate?”

“No.”

Potter crunched through the glass, pausing in the centre of the room where there were fewer shards. He stood on the scorch mark that stretched from the doors to the back balcony. He couldn’t possibly know that he was standing exactly where Lucius had stood. Draco could still hear the crash of the room and his life falling to pieces.

Though he affected coolness, worry crept in the back of Draco’s mind. Potter was difficult enough to schedule. Would he be able to find another handyman in time? “I fail to see the problem. Can you repair the mirrors by next Saturday or not?”

“How much have you read about me in the press?” asked Potter. “The Prophet is the worst of them, but they’ve all talked about it.”

“Here and there.” Draco usually used the Potter articles as kindling. It’s just that there were so many of them, so frequently.

“And the mirrors? What do you know about them?”

“They’re old. Antiques, my father said.” Draco stared at the array of broken frames, gilding still glinting in the afternoon light. “They’ve been part of the Manor for as long as we have records of it.”

“That’s probably not true.”

“Excuse me—”

“—I don’t mean that you’re lying. Just, er, wrong. Or, maybe there were mirrors before, but these ones are nineteenth-century, no doubt. Maybe there was… a renovation?”

Draco hesitated.

“Sorry, the point. Um. Nineteenth century mirror makers used silver backing.”

“Silver,” Draco echoed. And then it all clicked.

Author's Note: Ladderofyears—Emma, I read “A Star Danced” all in one go when it first came out. I smiled, I cried (a lot), and fell in love with your words and your universe. It is one of my favorite stories I’ve read this year, and I felt beyond honored (and, honestly more than a little intimidated) to be given a chance to remix your story! I had so many ideas and drafts because it was honestly hard to remix perfection, but I hope you enjoy the new perspectives of the scenes you crafted with such care! His name is Kier Warden, pureblood, white as fucking snow with big blue eyes and an arrogant tilt to his chin. He's got soft blonde curls and a winning smile, straight white teeth. He's perfect for the Wizengamot, the picture of abashed contrition whenever anyone turns to look at him. "Sorry, Mr Potter," he says. "I don't know what came over me." Except Harry knows. Because he heard the low murmur right before Warden bit him, the foul insult followed by the open disdain. He bit Harry because he can't stand that the Wizarding world loves someone who isn't perfectly white. He can't take the way the Wizarding world seemingly worships the ground Harry walks on. Kier Warden hates him, that's why he bit him.

Author's Note: It has been my absolute pleasure and privilege to have read and been able to remix hephaestiions's fic, It's You. The atmosphere of that fic stuck with me when I read it and I couldn't get it out of my head. I had so many ideas about where I wanted to take this fic but by the time I got to the end, it felt like this fic was complete. It has been a pleasure to dip my toes into your world, hephaestiions. Thank you for allowing me to be part of it. I wanted to address the "racism" tag in this fic. It refers to the way certain characters in this fic view poc characters as less than. Also, since werewolves in the HP world are considered outcasts, there's a moment in the fic where there's discussion of whether a poc werewolf is classified as "Beast" or "Being." The whole fic deals with POC werewolf Harry trying to navigate a racist society. That said, Harry in this fic is mixed race, Latine/Indian. Because I am a white-passing latine, born in the US, I had the help of my two sensitivity readers, L and S. I am immensely grateful for their insights on this story. I would also like to thank S, the amazing beta who read over this piece and helped me whip this fic into shape. I appreciate all your comments and all your help. Author's Note: When I received the email that said I would be remixing one of TheMightyFlynn's works, I spent an entire day squealing to myself, and then weeks shaking with nerves, because how can you choose from such a long, wonderful, varied catalogue? I had the time of my life re-reading the works I already knew, and reading the ones I didn't for the first time. The true tragedy of this fest is that I can't remix every single one of their works. This little piece is an exploration of the lovely lovely Draco they created in A Different Kind Of Heat, a story which gripped me from the beginning, and when I got to the last sentence, I went right back to the top and reread it right then. That was at the beginning of lockdown, more than a year and a half ago. The whole time I read it, I couldn't help but wonder what those first few years were like for Draco, never even imagining that I would one day be right here, remixing it. Life is crazy. I had the best time, and I really, really hope I did it some justice. If this story makes any sense, it's thanks to Phoebe, and her spot-on, clever suggestions. I can't thank you enough Pheebs, you're the mvp.

Summary:

Harry walks through the halls of Grimmauld Place for the last time. Unable to forget, and maybe never wanting to.

But as the Grandfather clock strikes two, the door shutting closed behind him, Harry knows that he must get what he wants, and Harry has always wanted Draco.

Excerpt:

The sound of polished shoes drumming against wood made Harry snap his head to the door, wand pointing to a chest clad in a fitted blue shirt. Harry’s gaze travelled up to meet Malfoy’s steel eyes, a cigarette held between long fingers.

“What are you doing here?” Harry said roughly. “I thought you were supposed to be in France today.”

“Indeed,” was all Malfoy said, as he traced his eyes over the rubble of the living room. Shreds of material littered the floor, charred black stains bloomed against woven flowers. “You’re destroying centuries worth of ancient history, you know.” Malfoy closed the distance, eyebrows furrowed in a frown as he ran his palm over what was left of the curtains. “Original Indian Chintz. Seventeenth century. These are all hand-drawn designs, Potter. You can’t get colours like this anymore, even with magic.”

Harry stared at the ruin of the curtains and back at Malfoy, who gently thumbed a red flower as if it meant so much more than a bit of fabric in a dusty, old house. “What are you doing here, Malfoy, you can’t keep barging into my home without permission.”

Malfoy stepped back, blowing a waft of smoke away from the curtains. “Granger said you’ve been acting more strange than usual. I’m here to make sure you haven’t ruined my house more than you already have.”

Harry crossed his arms. “This isn’t your house. Just because you have family history here doesn’t mean you can take it from me. This is all I have left of them.”

The tip of the cigarette burned from between Malfoy’s lips as he inhaled the smoke. He took his time responding to Harry, as if he were savouring the words in his mouth like the bitter taste of tobacco.

“And yet,” he began slowly, a tendril of smoke swirling in the air and bursting between them. “Here you are tearing it down piece by piece.” Malfoy stepped forward, back straight and foreboding as he leaned in close to Harry. Breath hot and burning as it shattered against Harry’s cheeks. “You say that you don’t want to forget the people you lost, and yet staying here in this place is only killing you too.”

More notes beyond the cut!

I had such an amazing time writing this fic, I really wanted to capture a certain reminiscing atmosphere throughout it. Here, Harry walks through the halls of Grimmauld place, stuck in a reverie of his life with Draco up until this point. What I find most interesting about this fic is how the whole story mainly surrounds Harry's memories. It's probably one of the most simplest stories I've written plot-wise, but there's just something special that I really like about this one. It kind of reminds me of the time I did the same thing years ago, walking through a house for the very last time, trying to soak up all the memories and emotions you've ever felt in that place for fear you'll forget or lose them if you don't.

I don't know how to properly describe this fic, so instead, I'll let google do the talking.

When you distill something, you are boiling it down to its essence — its most important part. Whether it's alcohol or ideas, the distilled part is the most powerful.

For me, the most simple, mundane things can be the most powerful. Whether it's a small gift someone gave you way back when, an old photo album you've never seen before, a dusty floral curtain... they're all small, important parts of something much larger.

Harry visits Malfoy in Azkaban. “The fuck are you here for, Potter?” “Wanted to see if you still had your soul and all,” Harry mutters. “I thought one of the Dementors here might try and kiss you.” Malfoy huffs out a laugh and starts coughing and hacking up shit, sounding real awful. Awful in that way that makes you want to laugh, too. Then you feel guilty about laughing later.
