And as I looked through these new pupils wondering what was beyond those doors. What would I learn!? What would I read?! People, minds, or articles? Would the woman with the torch welcome me home or here with new eyes, new cultural norms, new words. Would I now miss the cheese, olives, and baguettes I lived on in Grand Place, Brussels. Oh how they smile at you in Berlin when you say Danke. Or how in Paris, I’d watch the Effie’s tower’s light display from my hotel room window, Or cold beers on the canals of Ghent. Or how friendly everyone suddenly became. Or the relief I felt while arriving in SoHo and I could finally read everything again. As I get ready to return to New York I ask myself, “What have I learned during this self imposed challenged?” I’ve learned that running is only stigmatized by those afraid to do it. That life rewards those who jump. No matter how far you stray from your belief in love it always comes back. That if you dare to look hard and far enough, there’s is someone looking just as hard and far for you. That if you have no where to go you just might find a place to called home. I could live off Flemish stew and Jupiler for the rest of my life. I could live somewhere not understanding the French, Dutch, and German being spoken for the rest of my life. I should probably start learning French, Dutch, and German. And even though I swore to myself I wouldn’t ever fall in love again.
