Lorna sighed as she looked over at who had scared her, her face was familiar and her attitude was quite rude. “If I were a cop I wouldn’t be hiding out around here smoking.” She replied as she took another drag of her cigarette blowing up the smoke in to the sky so she wasn’t being too rude while she looked back at her seeing her putting something on her lips.
“Oh trust me this is just my defence mechanism, I’m normally never this bitchy but when a whole town is on alert, it stays up.”She replied letting a soft sigh escape from her lips before chuckling. “Oh how I wish that I was waiting on somebody to pick me up. Sadly I have another few hours, just needed a break away from loud families.”
Tumblr media
“I mean, maybe if you were undercover trying to catch the murderer guy.” Heather folded her arms and her heels clicked against the floor.
“Okay, you’re right, much better to be a bitch to a killer than make him think you’re an easy mark, I guess.” Heather had been mulling things over since she left school, she was better than she had been but even she was on edge enough to snap back at Lorna who had been just as startled. “Oh ew, children with their nasty sticky hands, condolences,” she said, hefting her ginormous red purse off of one shoulder to open it. Inside lay a  cornucopia of everything anyone could ever need including first aid and sewing kits, snacks, mint or bubblegum, make-up, half a pill cabinet, an umbrella, hair ties, clips and more. She returned the lipgloss to the depths. “Peace offering, you need anything?”

“You have eyes, congratulations.” Gareth crossed his stick between his knees, working on the pads on his arms to get them loose. He wore a blue hockey jersey in the team’s colours.
“Wow, low blow and that’s only suspected actually, so watch your mouth around here.” Grizz spoke out the corner of his own mouth, eyes darting around. Two of the wings from the other team had sucker gut-punched him outside the showers and he had a feeling he’d be pissing blood for a day or two.
“Not everybody in Muncie knows I’m public enemy number one and I’d like to keep my teeth,” he hissed glancing around the lobby before taking a deep, bracing breath. “Please, Heather.”
Tumblr media
“God is good.” Heather said so acerbically it was a miracle the words didn’t sizzle.
“It’s public knowledge, the people have a right to know.” She replied but her voice was noticeably quieter than before. Grizz seemed genuinely scared, she knew pain in someone’s face only too well. Hockey was a dangerous sport.
“You’ve got a mouth guard haven’t you?” It was cheating to be sincere and she looked away, lips pursed in discomfort.

Billy grabbed Heather’s hand and pulled her up, though not without an eye roll. She landed right next to him, close enough that tempting possibilities crossed his mind. Perhaps the night was going in a different direction than he thought.
For the moment he stayed put, keeping their distance close as he looked down at her. “Well what else did you have in mind, Holloway?” he asked, smiling.
Tumblr media
Heather stuck out the tip of her tongue at his eye roll. Unable to tell him the real reason why she had wanted help. She winced as her perfect white keds scuffed the roof, her healing hip let out an explosion of pain, ears ringing.
Billy smelt like the last notes of good aftershave, a dash of chlorine and cigarettes. Late summer. “I’m thinking being good has never gotten me jack shit.” She waltzed her eyes down to his mouth, she knew him better than most anyone in this town but to her this side had always been hidden from view. “Where do you take one of your girls on a nice night like this that doesn’t bore them half to death?”

“It’s not bad,” Billy responded absently. “It’s better than here. It’s just not … LA.” He knew the city wasn’t for everyone, Heather had even said it probably wasn’t for her, but Billy naturally saw things from his own perspective. And in his eyes, LA was gold.
He smiled at the callback to high school. With the popularity and admiration, they were probably the best years he’d spent in Hawkins so far. Even if he did feel like half the time he spent at Hawkins High was a waste.
“Well, you never know,” he teased, coyly entertaining the idea. He certainly thought he’d brightened up the town figuratively. “Stranger things have happened.”
He tilted the bottle to the sky, getting the last drops before setting it down on the uneven concrete beside him. The last rays of light had all but disappeared from the darkening sky, and unless things were going to head in a certain direction, Billy figured he should be heading out.
“Thanks for the beer, Holloway,” he said as he grabbed his bag and stood up. “Do you need a ride home? It’s not safe for a lady to walk at night all by herself.” The last part he said with a smile, teasing her even though the offer was sincere. Billy could be a gentleman some of the time, towards the right kind of people.
♡
“Maybe you can show me around, I might see your side of things, huh?” Heather was sure that if she was there and he was shining like she was sure he did in his home city, that she’d like Los Angeles more too. Maybe it was something about the idea of the desert that made her hesitant.
Heather squinted off into the distant skyline, her palm flat across her brow to shield her eyes. “What’s that I see? I think there’s a pig flying over oh, and it’s a cold day in hell-kins, Indiana.”
“You’re welcome, Hargrove.” Their names being so similar had always put them close on attendance. Instead of answering right away she threw back her beer, offering one soft hand up to him and waggling it obnoxiously to get him to pull her up with a teasing smile. “A ride home? If we’re gonna be boring and get back for your bedtime then I guess...”

Heather tipped back her first pain medication of the day, chased it with cool water from her flask. She shifted her focus then to the her boots, one ear uncovered from her headphones for her free routine music as she meticulously and robotically looped her laces on her skates trying to ignore  the twinging protest of her hip.
“Oh. You’re here this morning,” she muttered coldly. It was annoying that he did ice hockey, it had pissed her off every year since they were eight. “I didn’t think they let suspected murderers in a nice place like this.”
Gareth looked begrudgingly good, hair that barely dry that would freeze stiff if the temperature dropped like it did this time of year especially in the early morning. The instinctual allure of a numbered team jersey let her eyes continue to rove over him out of her peripheral.

Location: Outside Enzo’s Diner
Time: 7pm
Status: Open
Lorna sighed as she made her way out to the side of the diner, finally able to take her break after hours upon hours of dealing with customers. Some of them were fine and some of them were just driving her up the wall. She had been a little all over the place after hearing about the second murder at the Halloween party. She didn’t know the victim, but she knew the first, she had worked with Brooklyn was even friends with her so that had already shaken her to the core. She stood and picked out her lighter and a cigarette from her bag she brought out and lit the cigarette.
She was looking up at the sky, it was getting darker and she was honestly starting to think about putting her licence to good use and getting a car. She was feeling a bit paranoid, which was very unlike her, but she didn’t want to walk home with a killer on the loose. She was lost in her thoughts for a moment or two before looking away from the sky and seeing somebody standing in front of her. “Fuck! Weren’t you ever taught that it’s rude to sneak up on people!”
Tumblr media
“Excuse you? This is like, public property.” Heather clenched neatly manicured fingers into the strap of her red purse. She narrowed her eyes at the dark haired girl that she vaguely recognised. “What are you? A cop? Arrest me for loitering.” Instead of maintaining eye contact she took out the neat shell shaped compact from her hand and applied a new layer of a pink gloss to her lips between words.
“I get it, everyone’s on edge but please tone down the bitchiness. I’ll even tip you.” Heather put away her make-up and tilted her head, one curled pigtail swinging down. Her tone changed as she noticed how nervous Lorna was too. “You waiting for a ride?”

“Oh, thanks, I got this dress at the mall the other day. I really needed some retail therapy and I always like finding an excuse to buy a cute dress,” she shrugged her shoulders. Her pink dress covered enough of her that she could wear it outside of this ocassion and at church. There were even cuter options at the store but Chrissy really didn’t want to get a lecture from her mother. “Still, I really do love your outfit though. Pretty sure you’re gonna win this round of darts, I can’t say I come here often.”
Tumblr media
“Right, it’s always best when you can like, repurpose what you wear for Halloween in your wardrobe. Totally justifiable.” Chrissy was effortlessly pretty, sweet in a way that didn’t make Heather think she had to try. “Thank you hun, we definitely have the cutest costumes here.” At first her dad had objected to her going out on Halloween at all but when she had showed off the red ribbon she’d tied around a croquet mallet; Tom had allowed her to go on the condition she called. She missed her next throw nailing the wall beneath the board. “I’m not so sure, I think we’re both fish out of water.”

billy;
Hawkins General. Only in a small town… In LA all of the hospitals seemed to be named after charities or donors.
Billy smiled at the idea of Heather Holloway holding him at gunpoint, holding his hands up innocently as he jokingly assured her, “I would never. Cross my heart.” His free right hand drew an X in the air over his left chest.
He took another sip of his drink and stared down at the empty pool. It was nice to know that his tales of the sunshine coast and late night escapades were convincing, rather than just shiny stories that seemed out of reach. Billy did wonder what his friends, what were his one bright spot in Hawkins, would be like in LA.
“San Francisco’s not bad. They have some good music - the Dead Kennedys.” Though they weren’t Billy’s favourite, he didn’t mind their stuff.
“I don’t think it’s any secret I want to go back.” He looked over at Heather for a moment, the last drops of sun lighting up her blonde hair. “I’ve thought about checking out New York first, but I don’t think it’ll have anything on LA.”
Tumblr media
♡
Billy knew she was kidding but she arched an eyebrow and pointed at him gun-like, her best mimic of Ms O’Donnell’s signature threat pose, beer in hand. “Watch yourself, Hargrove.” Held half a breath before she giggled, nose scrunched.
Heather hadn’t allowed herself to be goofy in front of most people but Billy had seen her in every kind of shape at the pool. She melted slightly into the sun-baked warmth of the roof.
“So not good either? Where else then?” One hand swirled her beer, she stared down into it. “I’ve been on vacation but like I get how that isn’t the same as the places you’ve probably seen; bubble wrap still on it or something,” she trailed off to a murmur, her mouth twisted self-consciously.
“I know.” Heather smiled, sunnily and easily happy for him. There were few people on that list. “Of course New York. I think you’d make it, though we will still all mourn the fabled year-round tan that I had to hear about in every English class for two years. It was like if they all talked about it enough they could make it sunny at Christmas.”

“Thank you, can’t go wrong with a classic, right?” She replies with a smile, grabbing a handful of the darts and passing a few over to Heather. Chrissy was never one to wear something super daring and outside of her normal comfort, coming to a bar dressed head to toe in leather would certaintly turn some heads. “I like your costume too, it’s from, well, Heathers right?”
Tumblr media
“I think almost everyone here will get it unless they live under a rock and if they don’t you look so hot so, screw ‘em.” Heather nodded happily, swirling her straw with scarlet nails into her vodka soda before setting it down to take the darts. “Not exactly original or anything but I had the red scrunchie.” She broke into a giggle, her cheeks pink after being out in the October cold before she took her spot to throw her first dart.

“Yeah, they’re alright,” he agreed in response to her statement about the lightning bugs. His voice was quieter, one might even say softer, than it was before. It often did when he tried to be genuine, though it never lasted long. After another sip of his beer, the cynical edge came back as sharp as ever.
“Thank God for that,” he smiled, raising the cross around his neck to his lips. Billy didn’t think much about religion, but he was raised in a Christian household and, despite their secular lyrics, all of the rockstars back in LA were seen wearing them.
Unexpectedly, even to him, some of the softness came back for a moment. “You were born here, right?” he posed, looking off to where the sun met the tops of the trees. He wasn’t sure if she’d ever actually told him or not - he mostly just assumed everyone except him and Max were.
“Do you ever think about leaving? Not just for college or anything, but for real?”
Tumblr media
That was as good as a round of applause from Hargrove and she smiled unabashedly, the last of the light winked off the hoop in his ear. As the bugs were disturbed waves of soft glow lifted against the dark of the trees. She took a long drink of beer, Blondie listing into a rock song that Heather didn’t recognise in the background.
“Amen.” She answered, curling and uncurling a strand of her ponytail in a habit she’d formed years ago as he briefly pressed his lips to the necklace. It had been so rare in Hawkins for men to accessorise in the way that he had, with his big city fashion sense and all the swagger that came with it.
“Yeah... right down at Hawkins General, it sucks.” Heather murmured, though she made the best of their small town, Indiana was still Indiana. The tone was far softer than the following words.  “If you make a cattle or pasture joke I am gonna push you off at bb gunpoint.”
“All the time.” Heather laughed bitterly down into her hands. “I got into Northwestern, in Illinois but you’re right. Someone might have sold California to me pretty well though Los Angeles doesn’t seem my kind of scene, maybe San Francisco.”

“Would you like to play a round of darts with me?” Chrissy asked the first semi friendly and familiar face she could spot amongst the crowd. This wasn’t exactly her scene but she didn’t really feel like sitting around this weekend stuck at home, feeling upset over the recent events happening in town. The blonde couldn’t say she’s ever really been here before and honestly? It might shock some people. But, she was trying to branch out within her young adulthood and this was a start. “I like your costume by the way! It’s a bit more creative than mine, but I’m just a sucker for Grease.” She was dressed as Sandy, something simple and within her comfort zone.
Tumblr media
“For sure!” Heather smiled warmly, trying to make sure she could be heard over the people that fogged up the windows of The Hideaway. She smoothed her hands over the red of her Heather Chandler costume, she’d worried that people would think it was in poor taste. “You look great, sugar, we love Sandra Dee.”

“I honestly don’t think that I can get a DUI, unless they had those out for people walking home now.” Lorna joked with a small chuckle falling from her lips. “Well maybe I should try and do both, go and throw some apples, maybe hit some people or not and then get drunk, because if I did it the opposite way, I might end up in big trouble and I don’t think I would want to wake up hungover and in jail.”
Tumblr media
“Oh ew, that sucks. How far is that?” Heather asked, mulling over how many people she could fit in the back of her cherry red Mustang, pointer finger rested on her lower lip. “But at least you can’t get pulled over for not being able to walk in a straight line, I guess.” She blew a pink bubble with her gum, snapping it neatly. “That sounds like a plan, definitely don’t drink if you’re gonna pick them either, I don’t think being wasted and ladders mix.”
