How do you feel about Mr Robot coming to Netflix?

I hope it blows up in popularity more than anything. I get why some people would prefer the fandom stay small, but I don't really care about "bad" takes or cringey shipping culture or any of that stuff. If anything, it makes the fandom more interesting, and more fun for me cuz I can give my own thoughts as a counter. It's nice being in a small fandom but it's FUN being in a larger one, and that is what I hope for when it comes to Mr robot. I mean, realistically, I doubt it'll blow up that much, but if I'm proven wrong, I can't wait for it to become a cesspit of despair and stupidly 😭

I'm fairly certain that anytime we see Elliot wearing the black t shirt rather than both the shirt and hoodie, we see the real Elliot in the real world. It is not so big of a change that the first time viewer would notice anything significantly being different about Elliot, while people who watch the show again can point out some subtle differences in the way Elliot behaves compared to the Mastermind.

Literally my favorite thing to do on my rewatch is just try to point out when we see the real Elliot interact with the real world.

I've loved your RDR2 posts and saw that u reblogged a couple Mr robot posts. Can you give us your thoughts on Elliot as a character, or more importantly, the real Elliot?

Thank you! If I'm being honest, the only reason why I did those RDR posts is cuz the fandom just pissed me off one too many times and I decided to start yapping and it all snowballed from there to the collection of posts and drafts that currently sit on this blog. The Mr.Robot fandom is mostly dead tho so I just leave it alone, even though I have many thoughts on it as well.

Anyways- Elliot. I feel like my interpretation of him is pretty different compared to most, but alas, I'm more on the outskirts of the Mr.Robot fandom, so what do I know.

But to start it off, Elliot is a person whose heart is in the right place but is also very self absorbed. Not necessarily in the everything in the world belongs to me and I should always be the center of attention, but moreso in a self deprecating way.

I think we actually get the best understanding of Elliot through the fake world he creates for his core personality because it completely turns Elliot's philosophies, actions, and ideas on their head. What do I mean by this? Well, let's look at the fake world for a second.

Elliot in this world is basically the embodiment of the idea of the American Dream™. He is the CEO of a cyber security company and works to expand it and have it be used by big corporations. He has a girlfriend he's engaged to and is about to marry. He goes on vacations. He has fun with a shit ton of friends. He has a nice apartment that he'll probably move out of once he marries Angela, and then he might be even more stereotypical and have a house with a white picket fence.

The point is that the fantasy that Mastermind creates for the real Elliot is one where Elliot more or less wins at life through the American Capitalist system. The fantasy is also one where society and people themselves adapt around Elliot rather than Elliot trying and failing to adapt to them. The real Elliot in the fake world is still awkward as fuck. He's still really robotic in the way he speaks, but people adapt to him so it isn't really obvious like it would be in the real world. I think that also shows how deeply unsocialized Elliot is when he can't even be more confident in a fake world, but it all works out anyways cuz it's his perfect fantasy.

And this isn't the first time we see something similar to this. In season one, Elliot begins to daydream about doing and enjoying more mundane things and even being apart of it: "I'll heart things on Instagram." "I'll drink Starbucks vanilla lattes". This shows us again that Elliot WANTS these things to work for him. He wants to gain pleasure from scrolling on social media. He wants to enjoy things like Starbucks. I think it's less than he particularly WANTS to be a part of consumerism culture, but moreso he wishes he could also enjoy it as much as everyone else does because that would make him "normal."

So what does this ultimately tell us about Elliot? It shows us that though Elliot's heart is generally in the right place, he's still a very self absorbed individual. How so? Because it shows that Elliot is less mad at American Capitalism itself and is instead more angry at the fact that it just doesn't work for him. Elliot's, for lack of better terms, reddit rants is him venting out his frustrations of everything that doesn't work for him and in turn projects it on everyone else. He wants to free everyone, he wants to save everyone, because he himself is so damn frustrated at his life that maybe this will change it.

And that's the thing. Elliot's frustrations that he can't be "normal" under this system then leads him to criticize the system as a whole and more besides. He tries everything to "fix" himself. Get a girlfriend, be good at your job, take your meds, go to therapy, self medication, but nothing works. Some, if not most, of his hatred is spot on of course, he wouldn't be likeable protagonist if that wasn't the case, but other times it becomes literal reddit discourse. Like no dude, maybe someone wants to read a Hunger Game book because they simply like the book series? It's sometimes not that fucking deep.

Elliot has a habit of making everything about himself. Again, I don't believe it's intentional, I do believe he genuinely does care about people, but most of his actions circle back to being about him. FSociety is the biggest one, because FSociety was created by the Mastermind FOR Elliot first and for everyone else second. MM wants to destroy ECorp on the idea that taking down this one conglomerate will give Elliot the satisfaction and the emotional safety that a life under said conglomerate doesn't. It's a stupid idea in hindsight, even he realizes that later in the show, because y'know. Crumbling an economy doesn't lead to brand new perfect systems over night. Or ever.

Another way we see this is through his hero complex. He genuinely does care about people, but he can't seem to realize that sometimes, people don't need help or want the help that Elliot can provide. Elliot sees people's problems in a very black and white lens. His mindset regarding other people's issues is very much someone asking why an abused victim didn't just leave their abuser, not understanding how that can make it worse.

For example, Shayla tells Elliot to leave Vera alone after he rapes her, but no. Elliot sends him to jail and that then leads to Shayla herself getting murdered. Elliot hacks Krista and then tracks down her cheating boyfriend and gets him to break up with her without informing Krista about the situation which leads to her being mentally and emotionally exhausted afterwards. Elliot tries to befriend and protect Hot Carla in prison because she is a trans woman, which leads to her becoming an even bigger target and getting consistently assaulted by other inmates. And ultimately, he makes it about himself, as Carla mentions over and over in the Red Wheelbarrow book. All these people's problems are because of Elliot so Elliot HAS to fix it to help them and feel better about his own guilt. That's more or less his thought process and I love that Carla points it out because it is really frustrating but also a huge part of Elliot's character. And considering that the story is from Elliot's perspective for the most part and Red Wheelbarrow is ONLY from his perspective, it can show us how Elliot always tries to create parallels through other people screwed over by the systems to his own situations. And it shows again how self absorbed he is with himself.

Elliot has been failed over and over by numerous systems. I'd say especially the medical system. Let's skip over adult Elliot for a second but damn you'd think that after a child fucking JUMPS out a window, the hospital might wonder if there is anything else going on, but whatever. He's been failed over and over by people who were supposed to protect him. Obviously the big ones are his mom and dad. Let's go back to the fantasy again. In the fantasy, Elliot has a great relationship with both of his parents. His dad truly is that best friend he deludes himself to believe and not his sexual abuser and his mom is an actual mother and not a violent, angry, abusive woman. This happy upbringing shows that Elliot believes that he could also be normal if his circumstances were normal.

He's been failed over and over, again and again, that it leads to the person we see in the show. This angry, pessimistic, smart, and self-absorbed individual who wants the world to be a better place so HE can be better because the current system doesn't work for HIM. Mr. Robot and more importantly MM are his outlets to try to make it a reality (because yes. They are all the same people, let's not forget that.).

I love Elliot Alderson's character but he is for lack of better words a complete mess. Not a bad guy but so tired of not being normal that he literally makes it everyone's problem. And this isn't me saying that the only reason that Elliot hates the systems he fights again is because they don't work for him, because again, he has many valid points against said systems, but moreso that if he had to choose, he'd rather be like everyone else under the system rather than who he actually is.

This is just fucking word vomit, I actually hate it, I probably could clean it up and be more concise but whatever I already wrote it.

Anyways, I love Elliot, can't u tell?

Ok guys hear me out- Sledgefu is great, phenomenal even. I love those two jackasses more than life itself, they are beautiful together.

BUT Snafu x Burgie has so much potential. They've been fighting together much longer, they've acclimated to the violence and to each other. They have normal conversations, they laugh at each other's jokes, they defend each other and look out for each other, and they're at an equal standing in the sense that they don't gotta worry about the other "changing" if that makes sense.

Like Snafu worries about Sledge a lot, we see that, but moreso in the sense that Sledge is still "innocent" compared to him and the others and he wants to preserve that.

But Burgie? No, that's just his guy- someone to talk to, laugh with, to reminisce, to support.

Snurgie but they basically work together to keep Sledge alive and sane. Snurgie but they take Sledge under their wing because they both develop a soft spot for him.

I don't watch a lot of movies but this? This was a banger. The themes are phenomenal, the characters fantastic, and just a vibe all around. Southern gothic and vampires- fuck yes
