bringing in the changing of the seasons with harvester and john

usually the harvester is this barely understandable figure that only john can see properly, all the seasons at once pressed down into a form, the roots from the earth curling and twisting like bone and muscle and sinew, but sometimes

he sticks around in a form more recognizable as a man, gets down in the dirt on his knees, and helps deliver the upcoming harvest with his own hands

Adam (glasses) and Kendall (the one with the box)

they're married and work for a university, specifically cataloguing (or attempting to catalogue) weird stuff in the university museum archives. is it cursed? its it haunted? is it just weird? who knows! the archive rooms are cursed for sure. no one knows how far back the rooms go and it's sort of like a maze. a room will never be in the same place twice.

Adam likes puzzles, tho, and this is the ultimate puzzle. Kendall liked figuring out fucked up ghost shit until they decided to start a family, and now he's just a little stressed out all the time about accidentally bringing a demon back home.

sometimes Adam gives lectures on ancient history at the university, but cataloguing stuff is his main focus. Kendall, in a surprise turn of events, is an art teacher! He also doesn't know how he was qualified to do archivist work.

Do you ever devise plots around the children your characters have? What their family life is like? How they raise these kids?

I'm just curious to know as I love your plots and they are so fun and intriguing.

it depends! for stuff like john and the harvester, there are no children involved, so there's nothing there to explore, but for things like the knock off ancient world narratives: absolutely! there's nothing messier than high stakes inheritance claims, and for stuff like that, you need to world build the family life otherwise it's. boring.

I have this one ancient-rome-but-I-filed-the-serial-numbers-off-it story where this one guy hooks up with general of his father (the emperor) (everyone's above 20 here btw), and a week later the emperor is assassinated, and the guy realizes he's pregnant. the general is making a play at assuming power, even though the main character is technically listed in the will as successor, and he hates the idea of the general taking advantage of the pregnancy to legitimize his take over for power, so his best friend comes up with an idea to get married and pass the baby off as his, and there's like. another 20 years of story I've built up in my head after that. there's parricide and everything!

john and the harvester again! this time it's the off season, tho, so the harvester is like. in the Other World. conveniently, mirrors are doors and windows into Other Places!

local emperor gets knocked up by the head of his guard. he's not annoyed about it tho bc its speed running a solution to the problem of succession, but oh boy does everyone get on his nerves

even as someone who doesn't have strong opinions on mpreg, i find what little we know utterly FASCINATING

oh boy, okay, so it's like

to explain the whole harvest ritual thing that's going on, it's spinning together a couple of concepts, namely that the symbolic appearance of something in ritual is important for the intended effect. kind of like how in ye olde days (like, medieval/renaissance) for nobility, it wasn't that someone had to BE a virgin, but had to maintain an APPEARANCE of one in a high stakes political marriage (see lucrez/a borg/a) (so for it to work, john has to go through something like a pregnancy, but without doing the whole nine months and a baby part because its the symbolic appearance of it that matters for this)

the ritual itself is about how food harvests are necessary for a continuation of life, so a new harvest would require new life (or something representing new life) to continue. and harvests themselves are hard work, but so is living, so its analogous, ritually, to labor and birth. bringing forth new harvest (birth) to ensure a bountiful harvest (food) for the community (life).

the harvester is an old old old god who has always been where he is and this town was sort of came to life around him. you go where the land is fertile and the food is good, right? where else would that be than where an old god of a harvest is. the problem with old gods is that after awhile, people forget the names, which is where john comes in.

john is probably the first person in about five centuries who can actually see the harvester as he looks, and not just a person who's features you forget soon after or something that looks increasingly more wrong the longer you stare. john grew up around spooky stories and folklore traditions. he knows that you don't love a god like a person, you love a god by giving them something, with offerings and devotions, so: his body for ritual, which in turn let's the harvester act like the god of the land he is (the fuckin. pumpkin/whatever idol effigies that john gives birth to, they aren't a living thing, they're like the first crops of the season, so the harvester cracks them open and spreads the seeds to the fields)

(when he's not doing ritual devotions for an old harvest god, he works at a museum and writes for the local paper. he also gets coffee with the harvester on a semi regular basis and asks him questions about forgotten centuries of history)

(for context this is all set in some middle of fucking nowhere farm land town in new england. fields for miles, baby)

uhhhh. that's the general gist of it!! there's not a lot to it, the minor details change from ritual to ritual, I just really really wanted to create a setting where I could have a character get knocked up on the regular with enough flexibility to make it weirdly poetic or spooky scary depending on my mood hsshdhfhgh

sort of! he's mostly just Big and sometimes looks more like bones than person, but he's mostly person shaped, just a little to the left of ' Wait, That's Not Right.'

he DOES have a regular person shape he shows up as when he walks around the town, but even then people don't ever remember what his face looks like

I do not have an Ao3, and I didn't post anything I had written before because I was a little shy about it, but I'm hoping to start posting more now because. I need dense and heavy plots. I crave political intrigue 😩
