Clomp... clomp... clomp...

The sound of Yori’s footsteps echoed in the empty streets, barely audible over the sound of the rain thundering down around her. She was performing her nightly rounds, patrolling the desolate town as the clock neared midnight, and to no surprise whatsoever, hardly anyone was out on the town that night. I mean, only a fool would be out in such miserable weather!

She gripped tightly to the chain of Gama’s leash, in an attempt at stopping her hands from going completely numb, but to no avail, as her fingertips began to become shrivelled from the wet. At time’s like this, she wished she had invested in some more suitable clothing for these unpredictable summer storms, but it was a little too late for that. As the night dragged on, it became abundantly clear that there would be no hijinx that night, and all the usual suspects had decided to throw in the towel that night in exchange for a hot meal, dry clothes and a warm bed.

Talk about a complete waste of time!

By the time that conclusion was made, Yori was now drenched, shivering and thoroughly defeated. Surprisingly the same could not be said for her canine companion, who was still bounding through the puddles jubilantly, and barking at the shadows they cast, although just as soggy as his owner by that point. It looked like it was time to finally turn in for the night.

Standing at the curb, she stopped to fish for her lighter in her waterlogged jacket, wrapping the leash around her wrist to stop Gama straying too far as she searched. It took a moment, but she finally found it, dripping wet and almost empty in the darkest depths of her jacket lining. Well, there was no harm in trying, right? Retrieving a cigarette from her sports bra (damn... she a classy dame) she pulled down her mask and placed it between her lips, and began trying to produce a spark from her soggy lighter.

“... ... ...”

...But to no avail! After a solid minute of trying, she could not bring it back to life. Sucks to suck, bro. In response, she simply threw it into the gutter, cigarette still hanging limply from her mouth as her hair clung to her face. Truly a sight to behold.

As if matters couldn’t get ANY worse, Gama pulled his head out of a nearby storm drain to spy a tabby cat across the road, rummaging through an overturned bin, who seemed to spot him just as he spotted it. Springing into action, Gama bounded across the street, causing Yori to lurch forward as she struggled to regain control  Overpowered by the dog’s brute force, she was mercilessly dragged across the street by the hell-hound, feeling as though her arm might just pop out of it’s socket. Rest in peach.

He jumped as her voice suddenly rose, not even imagining that her voice could be that loud! He turned to her, noticeably taken aback, and slowly retracted his hand, pulling the slightly crumpled book from the shelf. Had he really been that out of line?

“Okay-- okay! I was just tryna help...”

Huffing, he handed the book to her as she reached out, before turning to her and bowing his head in shame. He had truly made a buffoon of himself that day! And in the presence of a child? A shameful display. This was no way for a gentleman to act!

“I-... I’m... I’M SORRY FOR THE TROUBLE I HAVE CAUSED TO THIS ESTABLISHMENT!!!”

And with that, he dropped to his hands and knees, patiently waiting for the girl’s reply, and silently praying for forgiveness.

Oh now this was just awful! The head librarian would be so upset that Kim had allowed the buffoonery to escalate this much!

“P-please, I…I’ll d…”

She’s starting to panic now, glancing from side to side as if to memorize which books go where – for sure she’d be the one fixing this mess in the very near future! She doesn’t mind, however, so long as the books aren’t damaged…

…which appears will happen in a few seconds if she doesn’t put her foot down!

“Th-th-that’s ENOUGH, sir, I-..a-ah, I assure you I’ll h-handle it…! Y…you, ah…th…that’s part of my job after all s-so please let me handle it!”

She looks very out of breath and somewhat on the verge of tears, but otherwise not very angry. If anything she’s more concerned for the books!

Timidly she reaches out a hand for the large volume that clearly didn’t belong on that space on the shelf, hoping that her companion wouldn’t relinquish the item.

Tendo jumped at Makoto’s exclamation, not prepared for her to still be fully awake in the middle of the night. It didn’t take a genius to tell that she had been doing a little late night reading, judging from the book on her nightstand and her... sweat. Why must her roommate read such childish things? She would take a fire-breathing dragon over some bare-chested, oily, rugged man any day.

“Ever better, it’s me. Tendo. Sorry to disappoint.”

She scoffed at her roommates ludicrous ramblings, clearly in a stupor from a lack of sleep. Didn’t she listen to anything she had told her?

“Yes I know, I don’t know how they could have done it, but-... What? Ugh, no! I said that the creatures from other planets were good! They are too wise for us lowly humans to comprehend, but still try to communicate with use through subliminal messaging in children’s movies and renaissance paintings, duh! They are our friends.

You’re thinking of the mole demons that come from their underground villages and use their powers to snatch babies and eat garbage during the night. If anything, it’s probably one of them, they are very common. Also, they can’t hurt adults, so we should be fine.”

Taking a deep breath following her rant, she nodded, turning to go find her jacket.

“Anyways, get ready. We’ve got stuff to do.”

It was just like every other night, she’d been marathon reading the ‘Drakonis Tooth.’ The cover of which showed a rugged looking bare chested man holding a large sword in the face of a dragon. But how could she possibly stop reading when Targan was about to fight his father, the dragon rider? 

She’d managed to resist the urge to read on and proceeded to at least try to sleep. Covered in a thin layer of sweat induced by the thrilling battle of good and evil, she delicately placed the book on her nightstand, shut off her light and wrapped herself in blanket.  She began to whispered softly, to herself. “I wish you were real, I wish you’d come to take me away from this awful world.” Nestling her face into the pillow she sighed. 

At that moment the door swung open. She flung herself forward up out of bed.

“TARGAN!!?” she exclaimed turning to face Tendo.

She swiftly noticed this was not the six foot handsome hero from her novel and this was in fact something way more important.

“DEMONS you say? But we preformed the sacred ritual to make the campus safe… Unless it’s those Demons you were telling me about. The ones that come from the other planets and they use the power of silence combined with their evil magics to-” 

She continued to ramble in coherently about demonoid-alien creatures, whilst pulling any remaining blanket of off herself and standing before Tendo.
