griffin  had  seen  a  lot  of  odd  things  at  the  fair  so  far  --  a  clown  on  stilts,  a  weiner  dog  race  happening  in  some  weird  part  of  the  grounds,  and  deep-fried  donut  bacon  cheeseburgers  --  but  nothing  was  quite  as  unexpected  as  seeing  alice  from  work  on  the  bench  like  that.  griffin  paused  in  his  walk,  eventually  and  hesitantly  approaching  his  coworker  as  he  looked  down  at  her,  a  mixture  of  amusement  and  confusion  coating  his  features.  “  ...want  me  to  buy  you  a  water  ?  ”

griffin  and  phoenix  weren’t  the  type  of  brothers  who  always  let  the  other  know  where  they  were.  sure,  he  had  phoenix’s  location  on  for  emergencies  as  per  their  mom’s  insistence,  but  he  never  looked  at  it.  thus,  griffin  was  pleasantly  surprised  to  see  that  phoenix  was  at  coney  island  too,  in  high  spirits  and  a  good  mood  as  he  walked  up  to  him.  “  hey,  man,  look  at  this  shit,  ”  he  began  excitedly,  holding  up  a  bottle  of  pinnacle  cotton-candy  flavored  vodka.  “  i  didn’t  even  know  they  made  flavors  like  this  !  but  there’s  a  stand  by  the  funnel  cake  that  sells  all  sorts  of  fair-flavored  drinks,  and  the  guy  let  me  purchase  a  whole  bottle  for  half  off.  wanna’  try  it  with  me  ?  ”

griffin  wasn’t  the  biggest  fan  of  val  when  she  wasn’t  in  his  bed,  and  he  generally  tried  to  avoid  her  outside  of  the  four  corners  of  a  mattress.  she  was  rude,  and  ran  her  mouth,  and  griffin  was  too  peace-love-laughter-fun-woo  to  ever  really  rock  with  her  on  a  level  outside  of  sexual.  that  being  said,  he  still  tapped  her  shoulder  when  he  realized  she  was  standing  in  front  of  him  in  the  line  to  the  ferris  wheel;  it’d  be  rude  not  to  say  anything.  “  hey.  you  gettin’  on  this  thing  too  ?  ”

griffin  was  finishing  up  a  giant  cone  of  ice  cream,  the  sugary  substance  melting  on  his  tongue  as  he  happily  wandered  about  the  carnival.  he’d  already  gone  on  all  the  roller  coasters  the  fairgrounds  had  to  offer,  and  he  went  on  the  drop  tower  three  times.  coming  down  from  his  adrenaline  rush,  he  was  satisfied  with  roaming  around  the  space  and  enjoying  the  sunset  --  nothing  weird  should  come  of  that,  right  ?  and  yet  he  found  himself  suddenly  stopping  in  place,  crowds  of  people  moving  past  his  frozen  body  as  he  looked  at  the  girl  he  swore  he  shouldn’t  be  seeing  right  now.  “ ...soleil  ?  is  that  you ? ”

            with  the  sun  finally  lowering  in  the  sky  ,  hanbin  was  about  ready  to  wrap  up  his  day  at  coney  island  .  he  had  a  lot  of  fun  —  between  his  first  ever  ride  on  the  slingshot  and  finessing  his  way  into  being  taught  how  to  make  toffee  at  the  candy  shop  on  the  boardwalk  ,  hanbin  has  done  enough  for  the  next  few  days  .  he  figures  he’ll  end  the  evening  with  a  game  or  two  ,  so  he  makes  his  way  back  towards  the  cluster  of  games  to  see  which  stuffed  plush  he  would  take  him  to  duri  .  hanbin  sets  himself  on  whac - a - mole  ,  figuring  it  couldn’t  be  too  hard  to  get  his  hands  on  one  of  a  big  ,  stuffed  doughnut  hanging  above  his  head  ,  and  queues  up  to  see  if  he  can  get  his  hands  on  the  next  game  .  of  course  ,  in  squeezing  between  stagnant  bodies  hanbin  collides  with  another  ,  and  an  apology  comes  tumbling  out  .  ‘  oh  shit  ,  sorry  .  ’  his  hands  fly  out  to  help  steady  the  other  ,  and  a  gentle  smile  tugs  at  the  corners  of  his  mouth  when  he  realizes  that  it’s  nan  .  ‘  well  ,  look  who  it  is  .  i  didn’t  think  anyone  else  from  work  came  .  ’ 

nan  hadn’t  planned  on  taking  up  masters’  offer  of  a  day-off  at  coney  island,  but  miscommunication  with  santos  landed  her  here.  after  her  brief  freak-out  (  followed  by  a  much  needed  cry  behind  the  hall  of  mirrors  )  nan  had  decided  she  might  as  well  do  one  thing  if  she  had  bothered  making  the  long  trip  to  the  carnival  anyways.  looking  down  at  the  map  of  the  island  in  her  hand,  she  was  figuring  out  the  route  to  the  candy  apple  cart  when  someone  bumped  into  her.  “  i’m  sorry,  ”  she  said  immediately  out  of  instinct,  map  now  crumpled  slightly  from  the  impact.  she  lifted  her  eyes  to  look  at  the  tall  figure  she  bumped  into,  and  felt  her  heart  leap  at  the  sight  of  hanbin,  felt  her  skin  prickle  at  the  touch  of  his  hands.  she  swore,  at  the  end  of  the  gala,  that  she’d  never  interact  with  her  ex  again;  it  was  for  the  better  --  and  yet  here  they  were  again.  “  hi,  ”  she  exhaled  out  as  she  blinked  up  at  him,  words  caught  for  a  moment.  maybe  one  day  she’d  be  table  to  talk  to  him  without  feeling  like  an  idiot  for  the  entire  duration.  “  yeah,  ”  nan  found  it  in  her  to  push  out  a  sheepish  chuckle,  fingers  toying  with  the  edge  of  the  map,  “  i  didn’t  think  i’d  be  running  into  anyone  from  work  here  either.  especially  considering  the  odds  of  how  many  other  people  are  here.  but...  it’s  nice  to  see  you  again.  ”

santos felt slightly out of his element as he held sutton in one arm, and finagled with her stroller in the other. it must’ve been a universal thing amongst all stroller companies to make these things as complicated as possible. sutton whined slightly in his arms– her eyes not knowing what festivity to focus on first. his sweet girl. after what felt like 3 embarrassing hours ( 15 long minutes too long in actuality ) sutton was strapped in and already pointing at things and waving at people. he felt like a cool dad– cool ass, complicated stroller, sleek black bookbag, but surprise it was a diaper bag filled to the brim with just about everything every single baby at the amusement park could need, his included. their first stop, the only correct stop if you asked santos, was the ice cream parlor. he place them under the shade of a “boo” umbrella as sutton said and they began their chowdown. five minutes in and his sweet girl was wearing her strawberry ice cream with rainbow sprinkles. “ do you mind– can you take a picture of us ? ” he asked the person closest to him.

usually,  santos  and  nan  were  on  the  same  page  when  it  came  to  parenting  and  communication. they’d  never  really  had  any  arguments,  any  tiffs  because  everything they  decided  was  a  mutual agreement, from  what  foods  they’d  feed  sutton  to  the  people  they  chose  to  babysit  her.  so  imagine  nan’s  surprise  when  santos  didn’t  tell  her  he’d  be  taking  their  baby  to  the  carnival,  and  nan,  who  had  literally  no  plans  to  go  to  the  carnival,  came  back  from  a  grocery  run  to  a  baby-less  house.  she’d  broken  all  the  eggs  she  just  bought  from  the  way  she  dropped  the  paper  bag  in  worried  shock,  growing  agitated  and  scared  as  santos  nor  their  babysitter  picked  up  the  phone.  but  nan  figured  out  where  santos  was  after  looking  at  his  location,  and  when  she  arrived  to  coney  island,  she  thought  she’d  find  him,  and  tell  him  their  literal  child  was  missing,  and  then  they’d  freak  out  together.  so  why  was  she  looking  at  santos  right  now  with  sutton  ?  “  santos  beau  hathaway,  ”  nan  nearly  exploded,  using  his  government  name  for  the  first  time  since...  ever  ?  wow.  “  what  the  hell  are  you  doing  ?  ”

for as kind as the day-pass offered to him was, the original plan had been to give it to his neighbor – single mother with the perfectly aged preteen for coney island. he’d gone once before – very cute, very ‘must see,’ but not necessarily worth a second visit… until they looked it up online, just to double-check, and saw that they would be missing the mermaid parade if they didn’t attend this year ! thus, standing on the boardwalk and waiting for it to begin, a small bag of kettlecorn in his arms, he caught the eye of a coworker. on an average day, he would let them be… but this was no average day. they slowly jogged up to catch them and asked the most important question: “ did you also see that the mermaid parade is today ? ”

nan’s phone was dead, a direct product of draining her battery through constant phone calls and tear-streaked texts to allison, naeun, and soraya. she’d been avoiding the groupchat so much that it hadn’t been a contributor to her now dead phone, but she couldn’t help but wonder, as she stood uncomfortably on the boardwalk while her phone struggled to charge in a nearby port, what people were saying about her. God, as soon as she had power again, she was going to call a lyft and go home and maybe cry for the entire time it takes to complete an i love lucy rewatch.  she looked up when she heard a voice, form tensing up as she recognized this person to be a coworker. “ i don’t even see how that would work, ” nan murmured, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear and looking away. “ how would mermaids participate in a parade ? ”

allison: thank you for telling me. I was sure it was an accident anyway, but i'm grateful you were willing to share.

allison: I really hope he doesn't go through with the trial, it all seems to dramatic and theatrical for an accident.

allison: I do genuinely hope that this works out for the best, neither of you deserve to live with this. especially now that everyone thinks it's their business.

nan: it sounds nastier with the way the gossip blog worded it, but it really truly was just an accident

nan: we hadn't been expecting him to press charges, but i guess i could understand where rolfe was coming from. all of the people i fly are putting their lives in my hands for however many hours i'm in the air for, and i suppose rolfe thought my co-pilot had it out for him this time

nan: i wish i could just leave the chat. it's not fun seeing what everyone has to say and comment

east  absolutely  wasn’t  doing  his  ( prospective )  job,  but  he  was  still  having  fun …  in  his  brain.  he  giggled  to  himself  before  attempting  to  capture  the  attention  of  the  first  person  he  saw.  “ hello! ”  his  british  accent  piped  happily  from  behind  the  reception  desk,  chin  in  the  palm  of  his  lightly  tattooed  hand,  “ how  are  you?  also … can  i  share  an  idea? ”  the  man  grinned,  excited  to  share  his,  in  his  mind,  phenomenal  idea.

griffin  had  only  come  down  to  the  lobby  to  pick  up  a  package  left  for  him  there,  but  he  wasn’t  mad  that  his  simple  task  was  intercepted  by  conversation  with  east.  “  hey,  west,  ”  he  greeted  warmly,  leaning  comfortably  against  the  wood  of  the  receptionists’  desk.  he  pursed  his  lips  at  the  question.  “  your  ideas  scare  me  sometimes,  but  sure,  hit  me.  ”

*   ⸻    GISELLE COULDN’T WAIT for the weekend , and her perfectly manicured nails impatiently tapped on the desk as she just wished it to be lunchtime already . “ oh ! good morning ! ” , her eyes shifted from the screen of her computer to the person passing by , but a frown quickly formed in her face . “ you don’t look great . ” , her words might have sounded a bit harsh , but it was true . they didn’t look their best . “ are you sick or did you have a big night last night ? ” , while she was suggestive , she still wore a straight face , blinking her eyes almost innocently .

“  wow,  ”  griffin  whistled,  sunglasses  of  course  shielding  his  eyes  as  he  rolled  into  work  yet  again,  hungover,  “  you  shotgun  a  couple  hundred  beers  and  drink  a  couple  thousand  shots  and  all  of  a  sudden  you  don’t  look  great.  ”  of  course  he  was  exaggerating,  but  he  had  gone  a  little  crazy  the  night  before,  as  he  tended  to  do,  and  as  giselle  should  know,  considering  they  both  had  a  habit  of  going  out  together  and  getting  absolutely  wasted.  “  i  had  fun,  ”  was  all  he  provided  her  with,  smiling  lazily.  “  and  where  were  you,  hm  ?  ”
