“Of course,” the volunteer said. Umiko went into the cage and brought out the puppy, whose tail started wagging right away. 

“You’re such a pretty girl!” Umiko cooed. “Oh yes you are!”

Shiloh reached a bit to pet the puppy, cooing quietly herself and making sure to allow Umiko time to hold the puppy before moving so that she could have a turn holding her. “And such a sweet baby, I love her already.”

One of the shelter volunteers came over to them. 

“Would you like to go into the cage with her?”

“Could we? Yes please!”

Shiloh was a little hesitant. Purely as a space issue, she wasn’t completely sure they could all fit. Umiko, the puppy, and Shiloh. “I’d just be happy to hold her honestly, she’s so sweet and she’s got to be the cutest little thing I’ve ever seen.”

“Umm… I can see how that might make sense?” Ken was honestly baffled by Shiloh sometimes, but he did his best to teach her. “I think I get where you’re going with that, so I’m going to say yes, if you consider us the fungus.”

“Well, I was kind of thinking the people who decided to format the tea that way were the people, and the ones who threw the tea were the fungus.” The teenager adjusted her blouse a little before continuing. “We play a dual role, like that kid who was the servant that couldn’t read and the apothecary when the drama department did Romeo and Juliet.”

Of course Shiloh would say something like that. Not that he minded- it just made him think a little more.

“So you see this brick of tea? Tea was often stored like this or loose leaf in large crates. They didn’t just dump a bunch of tea. They dumped decades worth of tea, which was thousands of dollars’ worth. It’s more like… Well, it’s hard to think of an equivalent because we’re so good at mass producing things nowadays, but this not only cost a lot, but it also would cost even more to replace, and it would take a long, long time. It was more like a giant finger to the British while also effectively ruining some people’s livelihoods.”

“So, it’s like a formatting version of when we messed up the bananas?” She was trying to make sure she understood it. “Like... People focused on one type of banana, and fungus wiped them out so now we eat a different banana. They formatted the tea so there’s a year’s worth in a brick, so one night set them back by decades just like the fungus wiped out the banana?”

No, her thought processes didn’t always make sense to others, but they always made sense to her.

Umiko linked arms with Shiloh and headed in. Instead of talking to the owners, she simply went over to the puppy’s cage and bent down.

“Hi there, Sweetheart! How’re you?”

Shiloh followed suit, making sure to keep the wings tucked in as close as possible, lest she accidentally bump into something. “Hi, Baby.” She cooed, letting her free hand drift near the cage so the puppy could sniff at her. “Such a pretty baby, aren’t you?”

“Pleasure to meet you, Shlioh. I’m Umiko. You ready to go in and meet our new puppy-child?”

“Yes. Let’s go meet our puppy child.”

“I hope we get to name him. Well, if he’s a him, or a her. Either way, I’m excited. I don’t even know you, and we’re buying a puppy and co-parenting them. This is an excellent introduction.”

“Either way we are getting this puppy and we are already in love with it.” She agreed almost immediately. “My name’s Shiloh.”

       “I got one. Look, I got one.” Shiloh turned her DS to show the pokemon on her screen, the body white instead of grey and the unmistakable female gender marker. “Oh good Lord, she’s hacked but I don’t even care. She’s perfect. I love her.”

        “I’ve got a history question, but it’s not really related to the lecture.” Shiloh adjusted her hold on her note books and adjusted her wings to let someone pass by more easily. “With the Boston tea party; I get that they obviously dumped a lot of tea into the harbor, but I don’t completely understand why it was such a big thing news-wise. Did they have a different tea back then, or was it like a meme thing? Like, how people changed the Hollywood sign to say Hollyweed and news spread everywhere because of how strange it seemed and now Hollyweed is this weird online meme thing.”
