This is a great weekend to watch a movie about the human spirit and literal magic.

I think something’s wrong with me. I make friends, then suddenly I can’t bear to be with any of them. Seems like that other me, the cheerful and honest one, went away somewhere.

Ponyo is Here

A friend recently shared this wonderful documentary about master filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki during the making of Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea.

Ponyo is a favorite of mine, not because it's the best they've done — arguably Spirited Away was the peak of script, message, visuals and music — but Ponyo brings to bear such an unbridled joy and utter absence of cynicism that even when it gets a little weird, it does so in such a playful way that it all comes together. Perhaps the best example is the pivotal scene where Ponyo runs on the waves of her sisters to be with Sosuke. It's set to a musical track named "Flight of Ponyo" which is eerily reminiscent of the classic "Flight of the Valkyries"; but it's a version that has only positive and optimistic notes, as if all of the war tones were stripped out. Which in these times is just a shot of positivity that is so wonderful.

Today is the Danish equivalent of Halloween and the kids dress up at school. And they do so well, I might add. There were the usual Harry Potters and Elsas, but also Captain Phasma, a sumo wrestler and Darth Vader, my daughter being Super Mario. But one of the teachers took the crown, in my estimation, dressed as a Cobra Kai karate champ. Deep cut.

Like John Williams is a reason Star Wars is what it is, so is Joe Hisaishi a reason for Studio Ghibli movies to be such profound pieces of cinema history. This piece from Laputa is perhaps my favorite of all his pieces.
