there’s something very strange about coming to awareness. not waking up or anything, just…suddenly being aware of where you are and what’s going on without actually knowing how you got there in the first place. that’s exactly what happens to casper, and it takes him a long, long moment to figure out that matthias is holding him.

which is something new. but he’s definitely being held, and it’s definitely by matthias, up in the air like he’s – no, he’s not thinking about it. what he does do is blink several times, eyes feeling grotty and uncomfortable. and then, after a long pause – ❛ weren’t we in a fight? ❜ he groans, and then ❛ please tell me i didn’t pass out. ❜

Matthias was holding Casper against his chest, hands under his knees and on his back, with a clearly concerned look on his face.  Relief colored his blue eyes but his mouth remained set in a hard line.    “   You passed out.    ”    He said bluntly,  his fingers digging into Casper’s back as he came to.  Matthias didn’t want to think about the fear that had gripped him when he saw the Grisha fall to the floor.  For a terrible moment his mind had been blank save for that image burned into his brain.

Matthias usually held back in fights.  The brutes of the Barrel very rarely required his full strength or the extent of his combat training to deal with.  He didn’t want to kill anyone he didn’t have to.  He had enough blood on his hands and most of the fools they went up against were just trying to do their job or were acting out of desperation.  None of that mattered when Casper got hurt.

He couldn’t say when he had gotten so close to the Grisha boy but Matthias hadn’t hesitated to kick the man he had been fighting out a 5th story window to get to Casper’s side.    “    You pushed yourself too hard.  You could have been killed.    ”    He scolded the man in his arms.

matthias has. a very strange sense of humor. which is to say he will think certain words sound like fjerdan words and that will make him chuckle. but trying to translate them is extremely not funny.

but he also thinks word puns are extremely funny and has a dad sense of humor.

𝐃𝐑𝐀𝐆𝐎𝐍 𝐀𝐆𝐄 𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐄─  Blessed are the peacekeepers, the champions of the just.

Matthias was left in the care of the Chantry as a boy,  he was the lone survivor of a horrible disaster,  it’s said that the apostate hiding out in the village lost control and the abomination they became burned the entire village to the ground leaving not but cinders.  Matthias only survived by the grace of Andraste,  he had gone one town over to retrieve medicine for his sickly sister on the night it happened and returned to nothing but ash. He was found by a knight of the Templar order who had been sent to recover the escaped apostate, named Jarl Brum. He brought Matthias to the Chantry orphanage in Redcliff in the care of the sisters there. 

The boy didn’t speak after that for months and even in the years following he rarely spoke more than a handful of mumbled words. Brum, now Knight Commander, would check in on him occasionally and when Matthias was 13 he offered to train him as a Templar;  so that he could make sure what happened to his family never happened to anyone else.

Matthias was a gifted knight, he threw himself entirely into at his training and excelled at every task set before him.  He was the Knight Commander’s favorite apprentice and that led the other recruits to resent him.  Matthias didn’t get along well with any of the other knights and his only real friend was a Mabari warhound by the name of Trassel.  He was a gifted knight and one of the youngest members of the order ever to be made a Knight Templar. 

He believed whole heartedly in the order, taught to fear magic and the mages that wielded it. He had never had any reason to doubt the Templar’s teachings until he met her. Nina Zenik, a powerful mage who refused to be ashamed of what she was or hide what she was. She forced Matthias to see mages as people, not just dangers. 

Then the fifth blight happened and the world fell apart. The circle fell to blood mages and with Nina’s help Matthias escaped. It was Nina’s plan to go to Kirkwall to escape the blight and while Matthias didn’t trust her, told her he would follow her, if only to make sure that when they made it to the Free Marches that she went to the circle there. But as they traveled together he began to develop feelings for her, feelings that compromised his judgement and made him foolishly begin to trust her. 

But Kirkwall had so many refugees already trying to flee the blight, they were going to be turned away so in desperation Nina claimed that Matthias was actually a slaver who had come to Kirkwall to sell her. So instead of being put back on the ship Matthias was thrown in chains and sent to the Gallows to await trial. Matthias spent a year in infamous Kirkwall prison, the Gallows,  half mad from lyrium withdrawal the only thing that kept him sane was his feelings for Nina. The rage he felt at her betrayal, what he would do when he saw her next, the way she smiled and felt in his arms…

He got out after one year, with the assistance of one Kaz Brekker in exchange for his help on a job. A Heist. He didn’t get a choice. But he had survived the blight, he had survived the Gallows and he would survive this and after it was done he would wipe his hands of all of it and finally return home to Fereldan. 

Instead he found a family with Kaz Brekker’s misfits and an unlikely home in Kirkwall. 

But when the conclave exploded and the Breach appeared in the sky Matthias couldn’t sit idly by and do nothing. He returned to Kirkwall and pledged his services to the inquisition, as a soldier not a Templar knight.
