January has been the strong, silent type. Every time I feel even the tiniest bit of sadness from the cold here in Colorado. The window scrapping, the shivering in my car for a few minutes before it warms up, or have had to bundle up my kiddo with 6 million layers. I can’t help but just think woof, it going to be such a beautiful summer. It’s going to be vibrant and green and breathtaking. The snowy and wet season is the life needed for the growth of Colorados landscape. It strengthens my spirit and reminds me that the earth was created in rhythms, and those rhythms have not stopped. So I brushed the snow off my summer patio sofa with gratitude. I would have lost heart, unless I had believed That I would see the goodness of the LORD In the land of the living. The winter solstice time is no longer celebrated as it once was, with the understanding that this is a period of descent and rest, of going within our homes, within ourselves and taking in all that we have been through, all that has passed in this full year which is coming to a close... like nature and the animal kingdom around us, this time of hibernation is so necessary for our tired limbs, our burdened minds. Our modern culture teaches avoidance at a max at this time; alcohol, lights, shopping, overworking, over spending, comfort food and consumerism. And yet the natural tug to go inwards as nearly all creatures are doing is strong and the weather so bitter that people are left feeling that winter is hard, because for those of us without burning fires and big festive families, it can be lonely and isolating. Whereas in actual fact winter is kind, she points us in her quiet soft way towards our inner self, towards this annual time of peace and reflection, embracing the darkness and forgiving, accepting and loving embracing goodbye the past year. 10 years and 15 days before our wedding day I made this little burlap book. I was 19 and head over heels for you @sully.barr. It’s a little embarrassing to see the words and feel the silly ness I felt way back then. However, these 15 reasons are just as true as they were ten years ago. Happy anniversary to us, we’ve been though so much and always have found a way to reinvent ourselves as a couple. These are the days of sunflowers and golden hours. The days of walks in the grass, potty training and beanies. The days where we drive with the windows down and are frequent consumers of Dutch bro’s. Committing some time to slow down. I’ve been thinking a bit about patience these last few days. How much do I have? How much do I require from others? How do I find more of it? Where does it come from? How much do I spend being patient? Is there only an allotted amount for each day? If patience requires energy spent then how much energy am I willing for interactions to cost? I don’t have many answers to the spinning wheel of questions my mind is able to muster. However, I decided that patience is a practice. Just as peace and faithfulness. So I decided to grab a Paint by Numbers canvas off Amazon. Little did I know when I opened it that I had chosen an “expert” level piece. Little by little and inch by inch I am committing the time to practice patience. To slow down, to be thoughtful, to be wholly present while I fill in each minuscule portion. Should I attempt to rush, or breeze through it. I will rest my eyes and start somewhere else on the canvas. Carefully selecting the time and energy it will require. Sometimes I find it hard to snap out of fake laughing with my kid. Maybe You know what I mean. He’s tickling me and im pretending that his little fingernails aren’t scratching me, that I am having just as much fun as he is. As often as I try to snap out of the fake laugh and have an authentic moment it takes a while sometimes. It takes practice getting out of my head. But man, that glorious moment when we are genuinely laughing at one another is the most filling and connecting in our mother/son relationship. The aliveness I feel in those moments remind me that it’s really really okay to just giggle and laugh together. To enjoy the present moment. I am allowed to give myself joyful moments and It grounds me more than almost any other thing.
