Wood plays a significant role in the aesthetic improvement of all forms of building constructions (whether for interior or exterior purposes). With the evolution and technological advancement, different materials are now used to make wood. Despite this, the strength and durability are still on point.
Usually, at the mention of wood, a tree pops up in your mind. Of course, you are right. But funny enough, wood also comes from hemp . Hemp wood is stronger than oak wood and it is used for almost all purposes as wood.
One of the world's most eco-friendly, fast-growing, and viable wood substitutes is hemp wood. Although, it is still new and being experimented with to make it possible to be used in the exterior. But anything for interior structures, hemp wood comes in handy and is a perfect substitute for wood.
HEMP is a miracle plant helping to Heal Earth and Mend People in the process. Apart from hemp wood as a building material, hempcrete is another fantastic product made from hemp. So, when it comes to whether to use hemp wood or not, you need to understand to consider the benefits that come with it.
What is Hemp Wood?
The world is going greener and economically sustainable. Therefore, all hands are on deck to curtail pressure on forest resources and make the environment more friendly. However, the pressure on forest resources keeps increasing, hence a need to look for an alternative. Hemp wood is one of the recent innovations derived from hemp. Usually, hemp is harvested in large quantities for industrial purposes.
Because of the overutilization of wood, we tend to ask ourselves if wood construction is sustainable? Yet, the increase in deforestation is reducing the availability of timber. Not just that, it takes a tree an average of 5-7years to mature for wood. Having that in mind, creative entrepreneurs, researchers, environmentalists, and producers are moving to other alternatives, which is hemp wood.
Hemp wood is compressed hemp pulp fibers strengthened with a binder such as soy-based glue. Also, pressure and heat are applied to the hemp fibers to bind well. Hemp wood looks more like oak wood because of its similar properties and texture.
Instead of waiting for years to harvest wood, hemp wood can be harvested and re-cultivated within six months. Isn't that fantastic?
Some of the applications of Hemp Wood
Like traditional wood, various types of finishes can be applied to hemp wood to increase its aesthetical values, durability, and decorative features. All these make it more applicable to the interior spaces.
