As Henry regained consciousness, Charlotte’s panicked voice rung in his ear. His patchy senses allowed him blurry vision but he could see Charlotte pacing from side to side, with her usual worried look strung across her face, clear as day. He soon came too and sat up against the feather pillows, still completely unaware of what was being yelled at him.
“Henry!” her tone was loud and firm, Henry jumped slightly at the sudden noise,
“what?” he murmured in reply, scratching the back of his head and squinting at the cream painted walls before sinking back into the hospital bed sheets, “where are we...?”
“we’re in the swellview hospital, but we really shouldn’t be. You must’ve got knocked out while fighting those guys in the nice nacho ball. And from what some lady told me, one of the nacho ball workers called you an ambulance and well, now you’re here. But we gotta get you out.” She tugged at his wrists, her grip just as firm as her tone. He barely moved though, still quite dazed and confused.
“what, why?” His voice was gravelly and bewildered, his eyes now darting around the clinically decorated room. A vase of lilac orchids sat on the table beside him, next to it a bowl of green grapes. A dark, smooth hand reached into it and plucked 3 grapes off the vine, Charlotte’s hand. She always eats when she’s stressed. “but shouldn’t I stay here? Haven’t I got a concussion or something?” His forehead wrinkled in confusion. Charlotte’s head spun around and shook, looking up at the ceiling.
“No, no no no, don’t you see!” she took a few more grapes and chewed them aggressively, still pacing, “if they try and maybe take your blood or give you a scan or something. They’re obviously gonna find medical records, your medical records. And they’re not gonna say Kid Danger are they? If they try and do anything, they’ll just straight away figure out that Kid Danger is Hen-“ she was interrupted by a young nurse bursting through the doors, a cheerful smile painted on her pale cheeks, “Apple pie and ice cream, careful the pie just came out the oven so it’s be hot.” Charlotte stared down at her shoes as the woman handed Henry the tray and left without a word. “Well fuck, that was close”. His eye’s lingered on the tray infront of him, then flashed back to Charlotte, still concerned and in a rush. “can I just eat this first?”
“No! We gotta leave right now, you can get apple pie from the autosnacker. Ray and Schwoz are waiting outside in the van” she replied, persistent as ever. Henry’s eyes remained on the bowl of warm applely goodness in his lap, the ice cream melting into the sticky apple caramel and the pastry topping crusted with a layer of sugar. It was the perfect apple pie, “but Char! C’mon pleaaaase, you know the autosnacker does shit apple pies”
Charlotte gazed at the pie, steam still rising off it. “Fine, but I get the last mouthful!”
“you’re such a dickhead, but fine” he chuckled and dived in, his spoon scooped up chunks of apple and ice cream. In probably less than a minute he was done, the bowl empty apart from the perfect mouthful left for Char, as he promised. That was definitely the best apple pie he’s ever eaten. Charlotte snatched the spoon from his hand with a giggle and scooped up the last mouthful, as she chewed it her face screwed up in delight.
“Nice right? I mean, for hospital food.”. She nodded and tidied up the tray, “ok we gotta hurry, we probably don’t have long”
“How exactly are we gonna sneak out? I don’t exactly blend in looking like this” A smirk spread across Charlotte’s face, the smirk she does when she’s got a clever plan, “that’s why I bought you this” and out she pulled a mint hospital gown and a pair of vans high tops from her bag, “well put it on then, don’t worry I won’t look” and with that she spun on her heels to face the canvas of a black and white flower on the wall, “hey hen, what type of flower is this? I can’t tell..”
“I think it’s a stargazer lily, or could be a orange lily”, he pulled the gown on and buttoned it up before sliding his cold bare feet into the shoes, “you can turn around now Char”.
“It’s so useful that you went to flower camp, you little flower nerd”. She beamed at him, laughing a little. Henry took off his mask and folded it with his suit.
“Great, now let’s go!”. She throws his suit into her bag and hands it back to him. Charlotte rubs the scrawly ‘Kid Danger’ off the whiteboard at the end of the bed and replaces it with ‘thanks, but I’ve got crime to fight!’ in the most Henry-like handwriting she could manage.
Then they set off. Walking so quick they were practically running down the corridors. Heads down, speaking to no one. They ran into a few people, always followed by a string of frantic apologies. Just as they were about to dash through the reception doors, a short elderly man tapped Henry on the shoulder, “excuse me young man, do you know where Kid Danger’s room is? My granddaughter is desperate to meet him, she a huge fan”. A little girl with bright blonde hair and the captain man logo painted on her face peeped around his legs, a shy and scared look in her eyes.
“Err, no sorry. We- we don’t.”. The little girl’s eyes teared up and she began to cry, sinking to the floor. Henry and Charlotte exchanged stressed glances before kneeling down next to the girl and trying their best to comfort her. Neither of them were very good at sympathy, especially when people were crying. Charlotte’s technique was usually to try and distract them with something, cool facts or a story; Henry most of the time tried to make them laugh, it always worked with Char. They held her shaking hands, whispering ‘it’ll be alright” and gently shushed her. Their attempts at calming her down soon worked and the little girl wiped her face on her dress sleeve, leaving a smudge of red and blue up her left cheek, and clung onto her grandpa’s coat. The man thanked them and patted the girl’s head. Henry and Char grinned with pride, forgetting their stress for a moment until a group of doctors came racing down the corridor yelling “Kid Danger is gone! He’s gone!”. and the once calm crowd of people turned into an angry mob.
Their eyes widened with distress before they began weaving through the people. Henry grasped Charlotte’s hand, allowing her to pull him through the groups of angry people. Most of them were yelling things like “what? Where is he!” and “how have you lost kid danger!”. Charlotte swung the glass door open with her free hand and dragged Henry through it. His breathing was heavy and chesty, but he could see the Ray’s van parked up in between two cars a few meters away. They hurried across the parking lot and clambered into the van. Schwoz was scrubbing the old moldy pot of brown soup that’d been left there since Charlotte’s birthday the other year and Ray was hooking another hammock to the ceiling, “oh hey guys, how’d it go?”
“Stressfully, but we managed. No one figured out anything so we’re good”. The angry crowd could still be heard from inside the van, Charlotte couldn’t be bothered explaining, “just drive”. She collapsed on the couch, a dust cloud rising from it as she did. Henry rubbed the bridge of his nose and sighed, “I just wanna go to sleep, how long til we get back to the man cave?”. Schwoz looked up from his scrubbing and laughed, pointing hysterically at him.
“Henry..what- what are you wearing?” He managed to splutter out in between his laughter. He received a glare from all 3 of them and a mumbled “it’s a hospital gown, Schwoz. Get over it” from Henry and a fierce death glare along with it. Schwoz took that and said no more, continuing to scrub the moldy brown soup off of the pot on the table quietly. “It’ll be about 15 minutes Hen”. Ray said, followed by a “hm k thanks” from a moody and tired Henry.
The low hum of the old van engine was soothing to Henry’s pounding skull. He let out a long sigh and sat next to Char, leaning into her shoulder in an exhausted daze. Usually she would’ve objected at this, but this time she stayed still, he’d had a long day and she could tell he just needed a nap. She just smiled and watched him close his eyes as he cuddled closer into her fluffy hoodie. For once he didn’t look stressed or fed up; which for Charlotte, was a rare sight. No one spoke for the entire journey home, mostly because they didn’t want to wake Hen, but also because secretly they were all enjoying the peaceful silence.
