you and then me and then done artist statement
for my final piece i illustrated the c&h canes sugar bag as the main subject and the most impactful quote from the book on page fifteen:
“Ever feel like the land is swallowing you whole, Sierra? That all of this beauty is wrapped around you so tight it’s like being in a rattlesnake’s mouth?”
“...Children tend to do that.”
there’s a lot of unresolved trauma and pain that comes from parents in a lot of cases. many parents, i believe, never once stopped to think about the implications of having kids or felt they had a responsibility to bear children simply because they were married. as much as i love my parents now with our complicated relationship, they’ve shown me the struggles of having kids that i never want to bear.
to my mom, who found out too late that she never wanted to be married or be a mother. i understand — and i hope everything i do makes you feel at peace.

wash your hands artist statement
i played with the concept of a never ending video loop for my final project and with a mundane subject that matters immensely during these times. many people should be washing their hands thoroughly throughout the day if you’re out and every time you come back home. i like to think that everyone does their part to flatten the curve, wear their masks, and wash their hands but that was not the case when i visited a mall to pick up a few things. so, for a not so gentle reminder: wash your fucking hands and wear your god damn mask! it can feel like most of our days are taken up by this reality but it is never wasted.

why can’t we be honest? artist statement
why can’t we be honest? is a never ending video loop. it’s only meant to be a small part of the bigger conversation that a lot of us struggle with. i used clips from these videos (1, 2) and the music was built in from vllo, the video editing app i used. when i collected all the clips, i wasn’t expecting to use the original audio, but as i scrubbed through i realized it told a cohesive story. subtitles were put in for those who don’t understand korean as i wanted to fully communicate what changmin, the main subject, was saying. going back and forth to avoid these honest conversations can loop forever because it’s easier that way. i hope we can all take a moment to stop and say what’s on our minds.

“i think we changed a lot”: artist statement
i decided to split up my ten gifs into two parts in a similar sense to a before and after. although the two sides have different coloring and vibes, they both have a sense of calmness. even if people do change, i think there is the feeling of disappointment with the relief — like the secret hope that things do change completely while wanting everything to stay the same. in my own personal experiences, i had moments where i felt a community that i attached my identity to break up and lead me to personal growth. this project pushed my current gif making abilities to present a full story with color palettes and mindful composition.

old aches
I focused on the feeling of the kind of nostalgia that hurts without reason — nostalgia that rattles you until you try to forget again. There are a lot of moments like this that humans experience walking with time that disappears; and, something I wanted to bring into another moment of the viewer’s experience. Finding these photos to cut and paste together helped me solidify my vision. The graphic components became a last-minute addition that further unified the piece and contributed to the theme of time. The biggest inspiration to the color palette and vibe of old aches was through the stages of insecurity and anxiety throughout the artistic process.
