This was one of the funniest Gifts I ever gave my mother, she collects bells. So this one Christmas I got her a bell at the dollar store took it out of its box and created a sort of shipping box for it, and created this letter that I put inside the box and did a wax seal on it. She just came across that and send me a pic, very funny the phone number is ridiculous. This is clearly an unworldly mid-Western dude writing something he imagines would come from France. Silly. 9 Year Veggiversary - 9 years ago today a little rooster named Napoleon changed our lives. You see we ate meat, chicken, beef and pork. We bought into all the marketing bullshit of free range, grass fed, humanely raised. We felt we couldn't live without cheese. We loved bacon. Then this rooster. This little less than 5 lb rooster, with the heart of an eagle, changed us. It was a Sunday and we had the chickens out in the yard. We had come in quick to grab something and heard a commotion. Outside we saw a dog. A specific breed of bird dog raised by our neighbor down the lane. We ran out as the dog ran with Napoleon in his mouth. Tony and I yelled and he dropped him. When we got to Napoleon he was alive, barely, with most of his back feathers missing and at least one puncture wound through his abdomen. Don't believe all that bullshit a bird dog raiser gives you about "they wouldn't hurt the bird" it is just lies. Tony grabbed Napoleon and headed for the emergency care vet. I then realized that we were missing our two hens. You see Napoleon went head long into the fight to protect his girls. I eventually found them both unharmed but so scared they didn't come out of the coop for a week. Tony eventually returned with Napoleon, this little scrapper was hurt but not "out", it took a month of daily wound cleanings, pain med injections and love to get him back, but we did. He lived for 7 more months until he was killed by a predator. So back a second to him in the yard. I remember looking down at the exposed skin, with tears in our eyes and thought "Why am I crying for this chicken when I have a freezer of chicken in the basement?". "Why do we love one animal and eat another?". It clicked. We made the connection. We were vegetarian in that moment. In the short couple of weeks that followed it became clear that being vegan was the only truly ethical choice because dairy, eggs and fish were all equally horrific industries. This was 9 years ago.
