Shooting down in front of her, a long flight of stairs emerges from the shadows. A nervous sigh falls out from Elenaâs mouth and steadily makes her way down the stairs. Walking downstairs, she heard something fall from behind her, turning around rapidly gave her subtle whiplash. As soon as her vision refocused, she saw the planks behind her drop to the floor.Â
Sighing once again, Elena mustered herself up with courage to make it down the dreaded stairwell. Something called you down here, you have to find out what it is, itâs for the greater good she thought. From the appearance of the stairs, she knew whatever is at the bottom cannot be good.Â
Elena put her foot on the cobblestone producing a light click. Looking around, she came across a few dusty bookshelves above them float single rusty yellow lights. Heart beating fast, she swallowed, and steadied herself. Elena pulled a book off the shelf and cracked it open.Â
A horrid vision of Avalor getting raided and taking every one of her family memberâs lives flashed through her mind. She dropped the book and as it hit the ground she became thoroughly disturbed and heartbroken. âNo ⌠What the hell is this âŚ?â Elena muttered. She stepped back from the bookcase until she hit the back of another bookcase. Collecting herself, she staggered her way to the next book that awaited her.Â
The next book only reminded her of her parents being murdered by Shuriki. Elena hurled the ransom book across the room and as she heard it hit a wall she slid down onto the floor. Why am I down here? She sobbed. I shouldnât be here. Is someone trying to torment me? Why? Why? WHY?Â
Elena made up her mind and decided to find a way out, there had to be a way out, right? Standing up, she made her way past the shelves and tried to find a way to escape the living nightmare. The walls were useless, even the floor. Elena tried to see if pulling a book would get her out of the chamber. Tearing through book after book, nothing seemed to truly work.Â
âAnd what do you think youâre doing?â A deep voice asked from the shadows.
Turing around rapidly to the sound of the voice, Elena furiously asked, âWhoâs there?!âÂ
All she got in reply was a menacing laugh.Â

Light is Coming
Mateo sat in his bed wide awake. Sleepless nights were normal for him. After witnessing his fatherâs execution, sleep wasnât much of a thing anymore. He drowned in his thoughts night after night, wishing for some sort of peace. His thoughts were interrupted when he heard a knock at his bedroom door.
âMateo? Are you awake?â
It was his mother. Mateo scrambled into his covers, quickly trying to look like he was sleeping. The door quietly opened as Rafa peered into the room. She took one look at her son.
âMijo, I know youâre awake.â she said with a hand on her hip. Mateo slowly opened his eyes and sat up.
âHaving a hard time sleeping, mijo?â The 8 year old nodded. Rafa paused, placing her finger on her lip in thought.
âI have an idea. Wait here.â Rafa rushed out of his room, leaving Mateo wondering where she was going. She later arrived holding two pieces of paper, both pictures. Mateo scooted over, giving Rafa room to sit on his bed. She held up one of the two pictures. It had 7 people in it. A dazzling girl stood in the middle. Mateo looked over to the second picture, it was the same beautiful girl.
âThis is a picture of the royal family who ruled before Shuriki. They were around when I was merely your age, Mateo.â Rafa lifted her finger and pointed to each member of the family.
âThis is King Raul and Queen Lucia. They were the kindest rulers, very caring. These are the Queenâs parents, Luisa and Francisco. This is the Kingâs nephew, Esteban.â
âEsteban? Like, Chancellor Esteban?â Mateo asked.
âYes, thatâs Chancellor Esteban. This is the younger princess, Princess Isabel. What a genius she was.â Rafaâs finger moved to the beauty in the middle.
âAnd lastly this is Princess Elena, the true heir to the throne.â Something about this princess was special to Mateo.
âMami, why are you showing me this?â
âPatience, mijo. You will know soon.â Mateoâs attention went back to the picture of Princess Elena.
âThe royal family ruled happily, everyone loved them. Once, Avalor was a peaceful, colorful, and vibrant kingdom. We were able to sing, play music, and dance on the streets. Compared to the present, itâs unimaginable. Everything changed in every way.â Rafa looked down as she recalled the memories of her early childhood. Mateo listened to her in wonder, imagining what Avalor once was.
âOne day, the evil sorceress, Shuriki invaded the palace. She murdered the king and queen. Your grandfather was there, and he knew a way to protect the Queenâs parents and Princess Isabel. It was a spell to lock them into a painting, but he needed time to cast the spell. Princess Elena bravely went to stand up to Shuriki giving your grandfather time. Shuriki attacked the princess.â
âWhat about the chancellor?â Mateo interrupted.
âThe chancellor was nowhere to be seen. Anyways, the princess was attacked. Unknown to Shuriki, she survived.â
âWhat? How?â Mateo wondered how someone could survive an attack from a powerful evil sorceress.
âOn Princess Elenaâs 15th birthday, she was gifted the Amulet of Avalor, a necklace that was charmed to protect the bearer. When Shuriki attacked the princess, the amulet pulled Princess Elena inside.â
âBut, I thought the royal family passed on in an accident. Thatâs what everybody always says.â
âNo, mijo. That did not happen. Your abuelo was there and he told me everything.â
âWhy are you telling me this, Mami? How will this help me sleep?â
âThe point, Mateo, is that there is hope. The Amulet of Avalor is still somewhere in the world, with the princess inside. Princess Elena will return one day and she will save us all. I have no doubt that she will. Better times are coming. Light will always defeat the dark. There is always hope, Mateo. Believe in hope. See the light. Princess Elena will return, and all will be well again.â
Mateo smiled at his mother. For the first time, he wasnât feeling afraid. He was hopeful. Hopeful that Princess Elena will return and peace will be restored. Rafa smiled back and kissed her sonâs forehead as she tucked him back into bed. Mateo managed to take the picture of the princess when his mother wasnât looking.
âAre you okay, mijo?â Rafa asked as she covered Mateo with a few blankets.
âYes, Mami. Thank you for telling me about Princess Elena. Will you tell me again tomorrow night?â
âOf course, Mateo. I will tell you 1000 times. Light is coming. I love you, Mateo.â
âI love you too, Mami.â Mateo smiled at her as he shut his eyes.
âBuenas noches.â Rafa whispered as she closed his bedroom door.
Mateo quietly went to his small desk and pulled out a red pen. He circled the princess and scribbled the word âhopeâ at the bottom. He quickly hopped into his bed as he hugged the picture on his chest, and fell asleep with the warmth of hope in his mind.
