Intro Post

hey, i’m beetle! this is just an introduction/information post on what i’m doing at hermit-captions.

basic info about me:

info about this blog:

this is a blog where i keep notes for what i’m doing! hermit-captions is a project where i caption certain videos in the hermitcraft series. i’m currently working on season 7, specifically starting with zedaph. i’ll probably list things like what hermits are available to caption, parts of videos i can’t understand, and my progress through videos. i don’t intend on using the hermitcraft tag too often, so i don’t flood it. i’ll stick to the hermit captions tag, except for on major update posts, like a video being fully transcribed or even captions being approved(!!!).

if you want to get started captioning, feel free to message me or send me an ask! i’m definitely not an expert, but i could probably give a couple tips.

tag list, may be updated:

“atc”, for videos that are available to caption ”captioning info” for information related to captioning “currently captioning”, for videos that are in progress ”guide”, for a guide on how to do something ”ids in alt text” means that image ids are in the image’s alt text “hermit captions”, for posts related to hermits and captioning “recap”, for posts relating to the hermitcraft recap “new captioner announcements” for when someone new will be helping with captions!

OK, so here’s the guide on how to check if a video is available to be captioned by the community! (forgive me, i don’t know how to format images to be between the text yet!)

Step 1. Find an appropriate video you would like to check! Click on the video and pause it, then go into the Settings menu (the cog icon, circled in red in figure 1).

Step 2. Click the “Subtitles/CC” option, circled in red in figure 2.

Step 3. I couldn’t get a photo, but if the menu says “Add subtitles/CC”, then the video can be captioned! You’ll need to be signed in to Youtube caption the video,

This is something I did not turn off or would not turn off. There's a bug in my channel not displaying them. I will be having a meeting with YT and this will be discussed and fixed soon." Scar's next tweet, featured below, reads "I appreciate and thank the people that brought this to my attention. As far as I know it is impossible to turn on or off C C on your videos. It's unfortunately out of my hands until YouTube is made aware and can look into the problem."

The second screenshot is a continuation of the thread, and the tweet featured reads: "I found a workaround to temporarily fix my subtitles. I go into the settings unpublish the automatic subtitles make a small change and republish them. This seems to work but I still don't understand why they don't automatically appear on my videos. This is so weird." Another tweet by Scar, pictured below, reads, "Also, a message has been sent to YouTube. Hopefully, they have a solution to fix this fast." End ID]

the "lack of captions" in scar's videos is a bug, not him manually disabling them! he's meeting up with YouTube to fix this soon!!
