Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz announced Saturday morning that state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband are dead, and state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife are wounded following a politically motivated shooting overnight. Hortman and her husband were shot in Brooklyn Park, while Hoffman and his wife were shot in Champlin. At a Saturday morning press conference, Walz called the deaths of Hortman and her husband "a political assassination." "Hortman was someone who served the people of Minnesota with grace, compassion, humor, and a sense of service," Walz said. "She was a formidable public servant. A fixture and a giant in Minnesota." Walz said Hoffman and his wife were each shot multiple times. "We are cautiously optimistic they will survive this assassination attempt," Walz said. The governor highlighted how these acts of violence occurred following a special session where both sides compromised for the good of Minnesota. "We don't settle our differences with violence or at gunpoint," Walz said. "In the state of Minnesota, and as recently as last week, in the most closely divided state legislature in the country, we sat down, shook hands and compromised, and we served the state of Minnesota together. It's possible in politically charged times to find compromise, democracy and civil discourse. I, Minnesota and across the country, stand against all forms of political violence."
There may end up being a lot of political theater in the U.S. today. I think this is the news to focus on.

Something caught my attention on TV, so I went and found the full press conference: how bold and well-planned the Minnesota assassinations were. In the middle of the night (2 am), a man convincingly impersonated a police officer, complete with badge and taser, in order to deceive his way into the homes. His car "looked like an SUV squad car," equipped with lights and sirens. "There was no question that if they were in this room, you would assume that they are a police officer." When real officers arrived at Melissa Hortman's house, they found a "cop" already there with the "emergency lights" on, coming out of the house, and exchanged fire. As of right now, he's still at large, on foot. A manifesto found in the car listed other political targets. Police are searching for him in pairs, and citizens should call 911 and not open the door if a lone "officer" shows up. My eight news apps will probably light my phone up when they find him.

I am begging the FDA to require that companies CANNOT just put "spices" as an ingredient but have to label the spices.
"Spices" can mean "this has some oregano and black pepper in it" or it can mean "this has cumin cayenne and paprika and if you eat this you will be sick in bed in pain for a week" for me.
Seriously, this is an allergy issue and a huge oversight on the part of corporations.
Require detailed labeling of spices used in packaged foods NOW.

I'm already seeing advice from people in the US to purchase queer books and other banned or "controversial" books on paper as a way to combat the wave of government censorship that is coming. While this is a good idea (it is! absolutely!), it's not accessible to everyone, and truly, we're not going to be able to consumerism our way out of this one.
If you can buy the books, do. Whether you can buy the books or not, borrow them from your library.
Borrow the paper versions. Borrow the ebook or audiobook versions. Request the titles you want that your library doesn't have. The more a title circulates or is requested, the better librarians are going to be able to defend keeping it if and when it's ever challenged.
Use libraries like @queerliblib too. The more members they have, the better they'll be able to fundraise.
Your community resources depend on you using them. Borrow the books before they go away.
InB4: Piracy is not the solution here. We're trying to keep community resources available, not make sure individual people can read individual books. Different problems.
The books are still available. Borrowing them from your library and returning them on time and in good condition will help keep them that way.
