He hadn't paid attention when he should've, and the cactolotl nearly swallowed him whole. If it weren't for Erik's quick instincts, El would've been that monster's next dinner. He was too busy mining at a nearby deposit. How had he forgotten about the cactolotls?!

Cool, refreshing magic flowed through his palms, encircling and soaking into Erik's wounded flesh. The bleeding slowed, the seams of his skin mending, reconnecting in a vibrant green light. He wasn't as powerful as Serena, but his healing skills weren't half bad, either.

Still, guilt gripped his heart, lips taut in bitter silence. Erik got hurt because of him.

Memories flashed in his mind. Yggdrasil, falling due to his failure. The darkness of the sky. The despair everyone felt.

Veronica's sacrifice.

He couldn't let that happen again. He wouldn't let anyone die this time.

Especially not Erik.
