guess who's back!

i'm finally back to live* watching these after being away for a while and boy what a fun one to come back to

not a ton mechanically: everyone is pretty much at the same spot as they've been since around episode 3, but we're likely to see new epic epiphanies by episode 8.

the new thing: van's story penalties. as of now, she takes damage while making nonstandard use of her prosthetic in particular environments. the ocean and the moon have notably affected it, and it shows up differently to olethra's mech than other stuff. my hunch is that comfrey created it with stuff from zood/got it directly from zood without telling van, and now she's getting into some of the issues with it.

their approaches to potential enemies are so funny. everyone except max tries to lie at first encounter, and max is usually telling their enemies relevant info.

also, i've been doing xp calcs along the way. 800 velociraptors (cr 1/4) plus a t-rex / t-rex zombie (cr 8) flat, with no human intelligence would be a cr 22 encounter just by flat xp count (43900), but that number jumps to cr 28 (131700) with contextual modifiers for the horde. adding human intelligence** makes it well over cr 30 flat (163900).

just 12, by my estimate makes it somewhere between cr 5 and 7 depending on how high you make the contextual modifiers for the environmental hazards and puzzle elements. i'll come back to this next week once the fight has concluded with more details.

*watching on premiere night when i can get to it

**velociraptors are made cr 1 but t-rex is left flat because it's mostly dead and directed by the legion

my guesses on some of the feats that we don't know the nature of:

down but not out might be something like a dwarven or undead fortitude, but is probably more likely to be a mech-specific ability regarding low hp or unconsciousness. maybe something to do if the pilot dies and the mech is still going.

one with the steel probably relates to either weapon usage or the ship, possibly info gathering, possibly adding to combat.

moxious attitude is maybe using flow points for charisma, something like a commanding presence

in other news, i love an investigation episode.

emily and siobhan were mvps this episode, between clocking the sextant and decoding the cipher, just so good.

the intrepid heroes have become very good at needling into exactly what brennan has secretly seeded into the world. they had some great rolls and even greater insight into the world.

also wealwell is not giving gilear energy, to me. it's giving young telemaine lomenelda.

some fun new things we learned:

everyone has homebrewed ship abilities that we're finding out as they play, i.e. dangerous rise, inspiring invective, rain of lead, etc.

monty is a monster hunter ranger, marya is a battlesmith artificer, max is a squared circle pugilist, pappy is a gunslinger fighter, and olethra has no subclass. van is the only unknown, because i'm still looking into her ability set. they seem to revolve around knack points and unarmed combat, with her prosthetic in use as a weapon. if anyone has info lmk.

update: van is a reskinned blade breaker fighter

they all start with feats as variant humans:

daisuke: sharpshooter

marya: piercer

monty: unknown (possibly related to vigilant guide, possibly not)

max: unknown (

van: sentinel

olethra: luck

some fun tactics. i love ally really committing to olethra's 11 hp and staying stealthed the whole battle, while keeping the documents safe

max is so so funny. just chucking guys. the platonic ideal of a gentleman fister.

So uncertain about the actual spread of abilities but imagine the old crew has more than Maxwell.

thanks for the info! it’ll be interesting to track the feats and see where they come from. it leads me to think that the timeline will be much closer to how fantasy high sophomore year was run, with a specific adventure and only one level up.

i do hope we get to see olethra at least level to match the others, but i’m excited to see how they work the feats into the builds.

overall the party is starting at level 6, except for olethra at level 2, to reflect their relative experience. we're looking at a tier 2 adventure with lots of aerial battle.

mechanically, they've added epic epiphanies--presumably they will earn these over the course of the adventure.

character-wise, we're looking at another oops all martials season. without repeats (all characters counted once for the categories that apply to them, the ratio as now come to 34:40:35:17 for magic, martial, partial, and not applicable. leaning much harder on the martial end recently.

everyone is down to scrap. i have a feeling that any magic is going to be filtered through technology, as much of it was during starstruck. they are actually quite charismatic, beyond the attack/casting stats.

murph is playing a pugilist, like out of tome of heroes, which is essentially a boxer. it combines elements of the monk and fighter primarily, but focuses on unarmed combat with reach and maneuvers within flow state.

as for the zephyr, my guess is that it will be somewhere between the level of seacaster manor and the wurst in terms of mechanical combat--not quite as technical as starstruck but more than fhjy.

i'm enjoying the group dynamic and the fact that they have these existing connections--it makes for fun interactions.
