Empathy homework

I think your empathy as a veterinarian is improved if you spend some time browsing blogs of humans with the various medical or physical conditions that we commonly treat in our patients.

I’m often asked whether a patient is in pain if owners decline to treat it, or sometimes even when they do. It’s helpful to have read experiences from people who have comparable conditions, or have experienced it yourself, so you can answer. This is particularly useful for scenarios where the answer is not obvious,

Is an untreated diabetic dog in pain before reaching ketoacidosis? Well, not technically, but they’re probably weak, nauseated and fairly miserable without knowing why.

Is this medication going to change my pet’s personality? Probably not really, but humans report a headache sometimes in the first two weeks, but it should stabilise after that. If the pet seems off, we can try something else. (Behaviour meds often have subtle side effects in small animals, but I think we can extrapolate some from humans like headaches, listlessness, etc).

I’m willing to bet the reason the dairy industry started using more nsaid pain relief in cattle is become some recent mother veterinarian knew first hand what mastitis felt like, and threatened to insert a gumboot per rectum if her mastitic bovine patients were not given adequate pain relief. Only later were the studies done to prove it reduces recovery time and improved productivity to give your cows pain relief.

I think there’s a lot to learn from these blogs, and encourage you to spend some time browsing through them. It might even help you working with clients, and understanding their needs.

Goodness knows the world needs more empathy.

I hate when parents use the whole “I pay for your food and clothes and everything else!” Excuse to make their kids feel guilty. Its like, oh, yes, sorry you decided to have a child and actually have to care for that child. What a horrible thing for a small human to need those things and for the birthgiver to care for them. Poor you.

These kids have icons that are my picture and their username is Halsey-Something and knowing that they come home from school and they drop their backpack, run upstairs and get on their laptops to talk about me at night! It’s just the most mind-blowing thing.

I just remembered this time I was telling a story to a friend and it was clear she wasn’t listening to me so I started making up this huge gruesome story about a cult murder I’d witnessed while she sat there nodding along to my dramatic moral struggle about whether or not I should come forward and then I looked up to see the table next to us looked utterly horrified and long story short that’s why I should remember other people have ears.
