always feel so silly complaining about an anime adaptation glossing over something, because I know I'm right, but I also know that there's an angle by which my complaint is "they ONLY drew this arc several thousand times more than the mangaka did"

Once again recommending donations to the Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund. Not only is it a credible organization, you can donate any amount, so even if you don’t have much money, you can still contribute what you can towards humanitarian aid in Gaza. It takes donations via credit, PayPal, and mailed checks.

Hey guys! Mohammed Ayesh's initiative to help University students in Ghazzah pursue and finish their degrees has finally taken off! Of course for this initiative to be successful, they need continuous support. Ayesh has decided that a medium-term goal of 10k would make most sense to aim for, as that would provide several more months of rent, maintenance, and supplies for the academic needs of the students. Rebuilding Ghazzah after the genocide ends begins with rebuilding the careers of academics and professionals, and you can help by being a part of this rebuilding effort!

Hey all, Crips for Esims for Gaza has been purchasing E-sims for people in Gaza and need help to continue their advocacy!
We link them in our Hi Nay episodes but want to remind people to help out if they can and donate! They're an offshoot of the E-sims for Gaza program created by Mirna El-Helbawi, and allow you to, if you are overwhelmed by the E-sims purchasing process, streamline it.
You donate to Crips for Esims for Gaza, and they do it for you. Help these fantastic disabled activists if you're able!

Link in replies so Tumblr doesn't hide this!

"Maomao, how are you doing? I’m doing well. My tenure is up, and I’m leaving the rear palace. A concubine who gave me a hair stick liked the work I do, so she hired me to work for her younger sister back home. I’ll do my best and more! Oh, I wish I could tell you in person. I want to see you and Shisui sometime soon. I want to eat ice treats all together again."

reading sazen's secret and thinking of that one moment in LN6 where he asks, in clear fear and worry to maomao, about what happens to concubines who break the rules. when he finds out the answer is "if guilty, death" iirc he seems shocked and worried. in the first few lines of the story, when he first finds loulan, he doesn't ever assume that she would be killed if the imperial forces find her, but hes aware that he could be killed. he only worries that she'd be dead by snow burial if she wasn't found. even when loulan says she can't go to the capital, he doesn't really question why. he probably only realised the sheer danger in LN6 when he asks maomao and worries in hindsight
#this short story was so good im chewing on it#it confirms a bit of loulan characterisation i was a bit weak on#chewing on it#i always wondered about that LN6 moment because it definitely implied#that sazen held a level of care for loulan that i didn't see in vol. 4#so seeing the context and reason is so good#sazen#shisui#loulan#also something about class difference and worries about the level of disposability#the apothecary diaries spoilers

On the surface, I don’t think the viewer expects Jinshi to—without any pushback, follow-up questions, or even much of a reaction—promptly drop the subject when he finds out why Maomao gave away his hair stick.

Of course his initial reaction is shocked (or not so shocked) anger that she would pawn off his gift, but the very second she admits she’d given it to Loulan—to Shisui—he backs down immediately. He doesn’t linger on the topic, and in fact redirects the conversation before she can feel pressed to say more.

If anything, I think he switches subjects almost too quickly to be casual. Because I think he inferred, by this admission alone, how much Loulan actually meant to Maomao.
He’d only ever asked her how she felt about Loulan once before, and she’d answered honestly, albeit through the haze of shock.

This answer, by itself, may not give Jinshi much to go on, but emotional intelligence is one of his greatest strengths. After Maomao admits she gave Loulan his hair stick—the token of his affection that he outright asked her to wear for others to see—I think Jinshi accurately read between the lines.
We know how much he cares for her, but I think this is the first time he’s ever seen her mourn someone. And instead of forcing her to elaborate, to possibly expose her grief before she’s ready, he changes the subject to spare her the pain that the topic clearly evokes in her.
#no yeah especially since this admission comes like. a week or so after jinshi first asked her#and jinshi knows very well how good maomao is at Not Expressing Herself#case in point the ice cream episode when he asks her why she wants to help xiaolan and she answers “because i couldn't sleep at night”#instead of the actual answer being that she was maomaos friend#the apothecary diaries
