glimmer activated the heart out of desperation to save her people from catra, who had even taken over salineas.... catrs activated the portal out of desperation to spite weaver and adora. completely different intentions. glimmer's was selfless, catra's was selfish.

No, it wasn’t. Glimmer’s entire arc in s4 is meant to parallel Catra’s. Yes, we can all agree stopping the Horde is a good thing, but her conflicts with Adora and Bow in that season as well as her conversation with Light Hope make it clear that it is also motivated by ego. Because Glimmer thinks Adora isn’t doing a proper job of being a hero and that she can do better. And that glory hound aspect has been a part of her character since literally episode one, when the plot got kicked off by her defying Angella’s orders to fight on the front lines and instead of accepting her punishment she decided to go off on a mission to “prove” her mom wrong. Same thing happens in s4, but on a potentially destroying the world scale, and that’s how Light Hope manages to play her like a fiddle.

Yes, Glimmer, a “stupid mission” that was necessary because your plan to just fire off the heart could destroy the world. Also, please note how her first reaction is “they left me” before she doubles back and changes it to “all of us.” (You mean the other princesses you haven’t even informed of this plan of yours and it’s potential consequences? Now why on earth would you do that… Unless you’re worried they’ll try to stop you too.) That alone demonstrates that the real heart of this conversation is Glimmer’s hurt feelings and bruised ego.

And that’s not even getting into how she manipulated Scorpia–someone she knows full well just got out of a toxic friendship–into going along with this plan without even bothering to tell her there’s a very real risk it will destroy everything by playing to her need for companionship.

I like Glimmer. Especially after s5, I like her a hell of a lot. But her narrow mindedness and hubris is her fatal flaw, just like Netossa said. And ignoring that she fucked up in a major way and had to deal with the consequences is missing the point of her character and story arc, in the same way that ignoring the fact that Catra’s actions–while selfish–were also driven by pain and a lifetime of being tortured (including, I might add, getting tortured yet again by the so-called good guys mere minutes before the portal was activated) misses the entire point of her character. There are so many shades of grey in Spop and Catra and Glimmer are perfect demonstrations of that. And Glimmer’s screw up ultimately teaches her to be a better leader who looks to other people for help and guidance.

Oh, and by the way? If you can call activating a superweapon that you know fully well has a good chance of destroying your planet and killing all your friends because you’re pissed off that your two best friends told you not to and not even bothering to consult or even inform the other people who could very well get their entire countries and lives destroyed by it “selfless,” then I think you need to check your dictionary, anon.

Yes, this is the face of someone acting from completely selfless intentions.
