Intersectionality and Social Media
This week I learned a new word, " intersectionality," coined by Kimberlé Crenshaw. Intersectionality would be described as the multiple ways that different forms of discrimination can intersect with each other. For example, I am an African American female and can be discriminated against for being black and female. Another example could be a transgender black male living in poverty.
Within the world of social media, many trolls may decide to discriminate against an individual. For example, in my study material this week, a woman mentioned how she was sexually harassed by men just for making a statement on a basketball team. Just imagine if she was female and African American, the comments could have been much worse because of intersectionality. Intersectionality puts us at a disadvantage online and in general. For example, you can post an image of yourself as an African American woman, and someone can comment on your body type, and your skin is too dark. That is the harsh world of intersectionality and social media.
