The print here is from a 1731 painting by Francois Boucher called Hercules and Omphale.

The painting was inspired by the story of Hercules and Omphale. A story told in both Greek and Roman mythology with a number of variations.

After murdering his friend, Hercules was advised to enter the service of Omphale, Queen of Lydia. Hercules had to submit to the tasks of the queen. For example, he had to spin wool and was forced to wear a women’s dress. This was painted as well in 1724 (Photo 5).

Hercules sought revenge on Omphale for this humiliation. However this hate preceded love and Omphale fell in love with Hercules for his strength and physical beauty, and they got married.

The print shown on the Vivienne Westwood clothing depicts this love.
