Claim: Americans believe in social mobility based on their success (in terms of money.) However in actuality once your are born into a social class, you will stay in your entire life. This is based on social status which is derived from money, power, popularity and inheritance of those materialistic items. The cause for this is derived from fear, hate and greed by the american people.

The Lack Of It
This link shows you the artifacts that I had discovered that prove social mobility does not exist. This includes books, graphs, articles quotes etc.
Fear And Greed
This addresses the second part of my claim which is that this is caused by the fear of people not being able to make it and climb up the social ladder as well as the people who are causing the fear. It gives you articles, books, quotes, songs etc.
Finally Write Ups:
The write ups tab has specific summaries and connections to each artifact. Some artifacts have these as captions however the longer forms of reading can be found in this tab.

Fear stifles our thinking and actions. It creates indecisiveness that results in stagnation. I have known talented people who procrastinate indefinitely rather than risk failure. Lost opportunities cause erosion of confidence, and the downward spiral begins.

Cinderella is considered an american classic is today's society and embodies the absurd idea that you can move from being a servant in the morning until the next day when your entire life changes in an instant and you are able to become a princess.
Statistically and in actuality, that is not the case.

The theme of education exists as a backdrop to all other areas of Chinas development presented in China Rises. This section outlines current issues in education and poses questions for further discussion and research.
This article describes how a social ladder has been seen in education. It shows that people are only able to get an education if they have enough money to do so. Those who come from less fortunate families are unable to pay for an education and thus cannot get a good job. And so the cycle continues.
This relates to my topic because it shows that money is power. A person is only able to reach that social status based on money. Having a good education provides you with the tools to become successful and also gives you security to do so. All in all education can be seen as a social ladder.

Study: U.S Has Third Lowest Social Mobility Of Any Developed Country- Dan Weil
I discovered an article that stated that a study showed that the United States has the 3rd lowest social mobility of any country in the world. It states that this American Dream of moving up in society is almost impossible. This study states that Americans have a 47% chance of being stuck in the same economic call as their parents. That compares with 50% in Britain, 41% percent in France, 29% in Canada, and only 15% in Denmark. So why is this happening? Experts say that the first reason is income inequality. It says that once a society is unbalanced it is more likely to stay that way because the wealthy can provide benefits to their children. The other aspect that people are researching is that having a stable family life increases your social mobility. However, it is getting harder and harder to fulfill that American Dream.
This relates to my thesis because it gives me hard evidence that my claim is correct. It also gives me examples of why this might occur in our society and gave me a new perspective on what some of the reasons are. Although it is a common thought that you can move up in social class, these statistics help me to show that it is very difficult, if not impossible to move up in the world and achieve that American Dream.

The American Dream of moving up to the middle class is looking more difficult than ever for those stuck on the bottom rungs of society.

I discovered an article on popularity which stated that since popularity is judged in a social context, people can alter their appearance to change how others look at them, causing popularity to increase or decrease. This can allow a person to climb up the social ladder, or climb down it. It also stated that in order to be popular figure, you must have the proper qualifications to do so, be beautiful, have money etc.
This related to my thesis because it shows that success/social mobility on depends on materialistic things, or what you are born into. With popularity, you are able to move up in this ladder, and there is no other way.

Economic research tends to find that an object's value goes down as quantity goes up. But a new study shows a wrinkle in that theory.
I discovered that this article experimented on the addictive power of money. In an experiment children were asked how important money was to them. They were given enveloped with money in them after they were told to make origami planes. Those who were told the money came randomly didn't have different opinions in how much they said they valued money. But those who received $10 and were told it was based on how well they did at the experiment were significantly more likely to say money was important to them than those who received just $1.
This is related to my thesis because it shows the power material things have over people. It also proves that money's addictive power can lead to an increase in their social status.

To This Day Project-Shane Koyczan
I discovered this video in 9th grade english class. It is a powerful slam poem written by Shane Koyzcan about his life which was full of abuse. It shows that when people knock you down, you can never recover and climb to the top of the social ladder where you feel important.
This is related to my thesis because it shows that fear contributes to this inability to climb the ladder, that people feel that they are so high and mighty and selfish, that they constantly fight to be at the top. But because of this bullying and fear of the bullied, that they cannot get there.
