Show that’s specifically made to be about aromanticism and asexuality as well as how aroace people are perceived by society. They are main characters. That’s the main plot.

2. Heartbreak High

Want a teen show with ace rep? No problem. One of the main characters is ace! Would you look at that! The representation already exists! It's got a ton of other rep too and it's on Netflix but somehow we never got that ace rep yet right? You don't even need subtitles for this one.

3. SkamFr (s12)

Is it a bit too much at times? Ye sure but you know what it also is? Another teen show where the main character is asexual that deals with asexuality as the main theme. And no you don't need to watch all those seasons before to get it.

4. Bojack Horseman

I didn't even watch this one but I'm aware.

5. Cherry Magic

Oh would you look at that a show with main mlm couple where one of the side characters is aroace? I mean surely it hasn't been done before.

6. Run On

You want some casual side character ace rep? Well here you go even kdramas have done it but I guess there just aren't any shows...

Great. No power on my day off. 

Unsure of what to do or where you could go to wait out the outage, you decided to enter the chatroom. 

Saturday morning. Zen has rehearsals all weekend for his upcoming shows, Seven probably only just went to bed, and there’s no way the others will be awake at this hour. 

With this in mind, it came as no surprise to find Jumin the only one logged on. He wakes up early as a habit and has been online pretty often lately. You both have grown close, sharing similar interests and enjoying each other’s company. 

MC: Good morning, Jumin! What are you up to today?

Jumin: Good morning, MC. I don’t have much planned for today. Right now I’m enjoying my coffee while watching Elizabeth the 3rd sleep. 

Jumin: What about you? 

MC: Ah… I’m not too sure yet. My place lost power this morning, so I’ll probably end up going out somewhere. 

Jumin: Come to my place. My driver can pick you up. 

MC: What? No, it’s okay Jumin! You don’t have to go to all that trouble.

It wasn't unusual for him to call you. You knew he'd been at a charity dinner that evening and patiently awaited his name to pop up on your phone at some point, likely when he wanted an excuse to leave.

This had become a quiet, calming ritual between you both. One call, maybe two or three each day for the past few weeks. You considered him a friend, but even putting that label on it seemed unsatisfactory. Your relationship was...well, it was unique. You weren't quite sure his opinions on you, but you knew that he was all you thought about of late.

That night you had accidently left your phone on silent, your "quick" nap in the early evening turning into a deep sleep into the late night. When you finally awoke and groggily located your phone encased within the blankets, the notifications jumped out at you.

[Harry 🐴: 4 missed calls and 4 voicemail messages.]

Despite the lateness, you immediately rang his number and the line connected after just two rings. There must be something wrong. There had to be.

You waited for his usual welcoming words of"What?" or "Why are you calling so late?", but there appeared to be complete silence on the other end. "Hello?" You uttered, briefly moving the phone from your face to check it hadn't disconnected.

"Harry? Hello?" You don't know why but you whispered the words into the phone, wondering if he was half asleep like you were. You rolled over onto your back, staring up at the dark ceiling as you waited to hear something.

"If you're talking I can't hear you, Harry. I'll hang up and-"

"Wait."

Your fingers twitched, gripping the phone a little tighter at his sudden, deep tone. Cheery as ever, you noted with a fondness you held just for him.

"Harry? Why didn't you say hello, is everything okay?" You ask in a flurry, concerned by his strange behavior. Well, he did a lot of unusual things, frankly, but not saying hello was a new one even to you.

"Don't say anything. Just listen." The impossibly deep and breathy sigh that followed reached through the phone and caressed your ear.

"I take it you've listened to your voicemails. I don't know why I said those things." His words sounded different. What's up with him?

"Harry, wait, I haven't-"

"Don't interrupt me." His stern words made you nestle your lower lip between your teeth and bite down. "Let me finish what I have to say." He continued, his voice a touch more tender.

"I just want you to know that I need time to think. So don't call me tomorrow. Even if you call, I won't answer." You desperately want to reply, to ask what he is talking about, to sooth the sudden and all-consuming worry now rattling around your mind. But instead you silently wait. Harry had taught you a great deal about patience since meeting him. For that you were quietly thankful.

A pause, then. "I thought you'd have said something," he sighed that familiar sigh. You rolled your eyes. Did he want you to say something? He'd just told you to be quiet. Make up your mind, Harry. "Anyway, don't take it personally. I just need time to concentrate. On my thoughts. I feel unusual and I don't enjoy it."

"Okay," you whisper carefully, still a little concerned by his unusually flustered words. "I won't call you tomorrow. Promise."

"Good. That's all I wanted to say. It's late. Get some rest."

The call disconnected abruptly. You frowned, quickly ringing through to your voicemail. Your face flushed a little as your heart rate picked up, not sure what to expect. You were never sure what to expect when it concerned Harry. Maybe that's why you liked him so much, despite everything.

You have 4 new messages. First message.

I thought you had picked up the phone. I said hello and started to speak but it wasn't you, it was your voicemail message. I feel like an idiot. You should make it clear it's your voicemail. I'll try again later.

Your mouth twitches into a smile at his dulcet complaints.

Second message.

It's me. Again. Why aren't you picking up? Wait. Can you hear that? I'll hold up the phone. This music is terrible. It is hurting my ears. I wanted to get your opinion on it. Is this what is popular now? I hope not. Everyone is dancing so they must like it. I don't understand why. I really do not want to join in so I called you. But this is just like talking to myself. It's strange. I'm leaving.

Third message.

I had to go outside for a moment. The noise is too much. Everyone is drinking wine and it is irritating how loud they are. I had a little wine too but I know how to pace myself. Knowing your drinking limit is key to avoiding embarrassing situations.

[...]

I called because I wanted to ask if you drink wine. But you haven't answered. Again. I asked the bird and they didn't know anything. I hope this isn't a joke you are both playing on me. I never understand what you two talk about. Anyway. I better go back inside. It'd be too troublesome if they come looking for me.

Fourth message.

Where are you? I had more wine. I would like to talk to you about something that occured but you won't pick up. Did something happen? I can't seem to remove that thought from my head. Logically, I know you are likely to be fine. So why is it I am worrying that you're not? It makes no sense.

[...]

I know. I will ask that bird for your address. I don't care if it's not a feature yet. I will keep asking until that so-called intelligent A.I provides me the details and I can see for myself if you are okay or not....no. That wouldn't be appropriate. God. I can't seem to calm my mind. Why is this?

[...]

You are...no, I can't say that. Forget it. What is wrong with me tonight? Talking to you without hearing your voice is unpleasant. Everytime you say hello on your voicemail I feel unsatisfied.

[...]

What I want to say is this. Without you on the other end of the phone, it's not worth my time to make these calls. I need to hear your voice. There's a horrible knot in my stomach that won't dissipate. I don't feel right without your voice. Where are you? Pick up. Please.

Your mouth is suddenly dry. Please. He said please. Your slightly nervous fingers quickly work to send a message before you can stop yourself.

Harry! I won't call you tomorrow, like you asked. I did promise, after all.

But I just want you to know something.

Day Six: Philautia

"You're going to see me throw hands with a geriatric." Jumin couldn't stop the small snort that escaped him at her statement. Her fingers danced skillfully across his scalp, contradicting her harsh words, as she shampooed his hair.

Jumin had come home in a frustrated mood. His father had once again introduced a girlfriend and her related business idea. When Jumin had turned down the venture, his father had gone into what his love referred to as "bitchy mode". He began to go into how the company had originally been his, and how Jumin was being a bad son. Jumin stonewalled him, refusing to put himself through another mess all for his father's love life.

When he'd told his love about his day, she declared that he needed a "self-love" night, and after dinner had drawn him a bubble bath, wine and snacks and all.

"Love, he's only in his 50s." Jumin said softly, leaning his head back on the porcelain lip of the tub to look up at her.

"Close enough." She grumbled before tapping his shoulder. "Scooch forward so I can rinse."

Jumin did so, tipping he head back as she gently poured water over his head. When he opened his eyes, she was smiling at her softly.

"I'm proud of you, you know." She said. Jumin felt his heart squeeze at her words.

"That means a lot." Jumin told her softly. She smiled again, and gently rubbed his shoulder.

"Enjoy the rest of your bath. Yell if you need anything." She said and left the bathroom. Jumin smiled as he sunk down into the bubbles. He loved her, and as it turns out, loved himself more because of it.

Being able to speak fluently and interact with native Chinese easily is the ultimate goal of many Chinese learners. However, it can also be seen as a great weakness. Based on my observation of students, the reasons were either they lack the opportunity to practice, or they focused too much on reading, understanding grammar, and learning vocabulary while ignoring the fact that speaking requires the additional skill of the creation of sentences. In this article, we’ll look into various ways to help you improve your Chinese speaking skill.

There doesn’t seem to be many blogs teaching Mandarin, so I decided to start doing so myself! I will being taking the sentences for this post from the Anki deck titled “Spoonfed Chinese Sentences” since it is well complied and starts from knowing just 2 words, and easily works in a few new words with each sentence. With this series anyone will be able to follow along and learn Mandarin, even if you are a complete beginner. Chinese can be intimidating at first, but once you get over that initial stage, it becomes quite easy! This is my first time posting something like this, so please don’t be afraid to send messages to my ask if you are curious, confused, or have suggestions, or just want to chat. 

Now, let’s begin learning! Starting with something you should know and will constantly be using in Mandarin : tones. 

There are 5 tones: 1st tone : flat. You make this tone by keeping your voice flat, or monotone.

2nd tone : rising. You make this tone by rising the pitch of your voice from normal to slightly higher. 

3rd tone : falling & rising. You make this tone by dropping the pitch of your voice from normal to slightly lower, and then raising the pitch to higher than normal.

4th tone : falling. You make this tone by dropping the pitch of your voice from normal to slightly lower.

5th tone : neutral. 5th tone is just keeping your voice “normal” or neutral. So, really there are only 4 tones in Mandarin. 

When reading Chinese characters, there aren’t many ways to tell how a character is pronounced. Therefore, it’s easiest to learn the pronunciation of the character at the same time of learning the character itself by reading the pinyin. 

So, let’s learn our first Chinese character and how to pronounce it!

你 nǐ (ni3) = you

When reading the pronunciation of a character, it is typed in pinyin either with the tone marker over the vowel the tone will be pronounced, or with the tone number after the pinyin. Sometimes sources that teach Mandarin don’t want to be bothered with inputing pinyin with the tone marker, so they just add the number of the tone that the word is to be pronounced with. In this series, I’ll be using tone markers since that’s how I like learning best since I can tell exactly how to pitch my voice. But it’s also good to memorize the number each tone is given in case you decide to learn from another source and they so happen to use numbers for tone instead of tone markers. 

So, for 你， you can tell how it’s pronounced by reading and memorizing the pinyin.The letters in pinyin are often pronounced just how they look, but sometimes they are slightly different. If anyone needs help with learning how to pronounce pinyin, please let me know and I will make a chart to post. But, for this post all of the pinyin is pronounced pretty much how it looks, so don’t worry. 

So, we know 你 = you. Let’s learn our next word so we can put the 2 together and have our first and most common phrase!

好 hǎo = good 

Put these two words, 你 and 好 together and we get: 

你好  nǐ hǎo = Hello

As you can tell, these 2 words literally mean “you good”, but this phrase is used the same way “Hello” is in English.

We have tones and pinyin and our first 2 words AND our first phrase down. Let’s continue learning a few more essential words, and putting them together to learn some very easy sentences. 

说  shuō = to speak/say

什么 shén me = what

你说什么  nǐ  shuō  shén me = What are you saying?

As you can see, this sentence would literally translate to : “ You say what?”. Keep in mind when learning and comprehending Chinese, not to think literally about what you are reading/hearing and don’t focus on translating. Translating Mandarin into English would be understanding the concept in Mandarin and then figuring out how to explain that in English. Instead, just learn and recognize each word and understand what it means. Try not to think about how you would say it in English, but rather whether or not you understand the message of what the phrase is in Mandarin. That way you can start to think in Mandarin, not just take in Mandarin and translate it into English. 

Let’s learn a few more words and put them into a few more sentences!

做  zuò = to do

了 le = modal particle intensifying preceding clause/completed action marker 

你做了什么？   nǐ  zuò  le  shén me? = What did you do?

As you may start to notice, in Chinese the sentence structure is often “Subject Verb Object.” But also “Subject Object Verb” is okay as well. Don’t stress too much over how exactly sentences are structured. Because as you will come to see as you study and interact with the language more : there is a LOT of variety in how sentences are structured. As I said before, just do your best in understanding the meaning of what you are reading/hearing to understand the phrase, rather than confusing yourself by trying to match each piece perfectly with what it would mean in English. 

This first post is quite long, but I wanted to cover the basics while also giving you a good amount right off the bat. Once you learn these basic words and have them stuck in your brain, they are so common that you start to notice them immediately once you watch a show in Mandarin or listen to a song or read some text. And being able to understand something can make learning a new language all the less daunting. Let’s keep going!

我  wǒ = I/Me

会  huì = can

我会做  wǒ  huì  zuò  = I can do it.

想  xiǎng = to think/to believe/to suppose/to wish/to want

你想我了？   nǐ xiǎng wǒ le? = Did you miss me?

想 has a LOT of possible meanings that can translate into many things. This is why some Chinese words have SEVERAL translations, because they are used in so many different situations/meanings. So when learning new words, its good to use context clues since the way it might be use in that particular sentence may not be the first translation that is listed. 

他们  tā men = they

他们会做  tā men  huì  zuò = They can do it.

As you see, 他们 is two characters, but means one word when these two characters are put together. There are a lot of words that are made from two characters that sometimes are obvious in meaning because it is just the meaning of the two words put together. But sometimes the meaning can be a bit different when you put two characters together to make a new word.
