It’s the end of #inktober! Today’s prompt was aptly “jack-o-lantern.” I’ve been watching a lot of @bernadettebanner so I had to draw her little turnip Jack-o-lantern. I think most everyone knows that the very first jack-o-lanterns were carved from turnips in Ireland and Scotland. A big thank you to @churchgoinmule for coming up with the #southerngothic promos for Inktober and inspiring me to pick up my drawing again. I may not be drawing every day (that shit is hard) but will hopefully be at least sketching more regularly after this. You will be able to see all of my drawings on my website in the next couple of days. https://www.instagram.com/p/B4TcjVHBHcm/?igshid=1xbgzhmccq4h4

#inktober #southerngothic day 30 Prompt “axe.” I think I got the drawing a little muddy but this is the kind of axe I’m most familiar with a “splitting maul.” I grew up with a fireplace insert as our primary source of heat until I was 17. I spent a lot of time stacking and splitting wood. My daddy is the master of splitting logs but I got pretty good at splitting up kindling. We had a double bit axe but that takes a little more skill and strength than the maul. Drawing in washes of black and sepia ink. https://www.instagram.com/p/B4RJjc3BiwU/?igshid=1wgj1tqm7p3ot

#inktober #southerngothic day 29 prompt “night light.” For most of my childhood my Friday and Saturday nights included the headlights of a 1991 Dodge Cummins Diesel (long wheelbase) as my night light. The hours spent listening to Country Gold Saturday Night on the radio, blue bar top trailer behind us, hauling first my paint pony, and the a cantankerous, evil ass bay horse. She’s still at the home place, still runs, and has an estimated half million miles on her. The best memories were made on that bench seat. #dodgeram2500 #squarebody https://www.instagram.com/p/B4RBkFZhBfi/?igshid=sawcw7dtq0g6

#inktober #southerngothic day 28 prompt “Ride.” I’m basic. My first subjects were horses and I haven’t tried to draw a horse in....I don’t know when. He’s to 12 year old me that drew horses by the dozen and just wanted to be @donnahowellsickles when I grew up. (Can I still grow up to be her? Go check out her Instagram if you don’t know who this fabulous lady is. I’ve loved her since she I saw her work the first time in the America’s Horse magazine in the 90s.) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4METaiBTwA/?igshid=eztvfjxm5vjm

#inktober #southerngothic day 27 prompt “Iron.” When I read that I immediately knew I had to do an anvil and hammer. My great-great granddaddy was a blacksmith, my great granddaddy was a blacksmith among many talents, and my daddy was a steel worker for 42 years. Coincidentally he’s rebuilding my great grandfathers stick welder, the welder he learned to weld with. My hubby has hauled steel over the road for almost 20 years and was a welder in years past. (I dabble with jewelry design and wish I could learn to weld but that stuff is hard!) I decided to pencil this one in and use layers of ink to build up tones for the sketch and only use very minimal pen. I just wish this was better paper. I’m having to finish the month in a different sketchbook and I have to say the multimedia paper just doesn’t take a wash like the watercolor paper does. https://www.instagram.com/p/B4L7wJNh8o1/?igshid=xgp11twxbbdf

#inktober #southerngothic day 26 prompt “attic.” Because what would an attic this close to Halloween be without a little witchy aesthetic. Let’s just hope she’s a good brujah and not Marie Leveau after that man did her wrong.... https://www.instagram.com/p/B4HA7jFB7M9/?igshid=314n1bwq0zx4

#inktober #southerngothic day 25 prompt “Blues.” It’s hard to get away from the blues in Mississippi. I grew up near the birthplace of Howlin Wolfe. A neighbor down the road, “Hollywood” would sit on his front porch with his electric guitar and amplifier and serenade the community with his covers and original blues songs. I can’t even pinpoint the first time I heard the blues. I discovered Billie Holiday around 15 or 16 when I heard “The Very Thought of You” and I was hooked. She’s still my favorite blues singer to this day. https://www.instagram.com/p/B4HAIcPhEqo/?igshid=m77mu3x28a2z

#Inktober #southerngothic day 24 prompt “lost.” Another drawing that was a much better pencil drawing and I sort of made a hot mess when I inked it. Oh well. This was the Chancelloe building here in Macon. We lost it a few years ago due to some structural issues. Efforts were made to stabilize the building but intimately it had to be town down. It was originally built by the fellowship of oddfellows who are a fraternal order somewhat like masons. Referenced from a photo I took years ago. https://www.instagram.com/p/B4BtAtjBywv/?igshid=r2ggf3dpnofz

#Inktober #SouthernGothic day 22 prompt “Ghost”. I love my family and al their stories. My grandmothers baby sister is still living and lives in an old frame house outside of Canton. She says her house is home to three different ghosts. She says this with nonchalance like she lives with three cats. Every morning she has coffee with a gentleman spirit who comes to the door peeks in as if to say good morning, and then moseys on about his day. Two little girls live upstairs. I’ve slept upstairs one time and I have to say it was the worst nights sleep I’ve ever had. There’s is something about that house. So this sketch is in honor of those girls. #ghost #spirit #southernhauntings https://www.instagram.com/p/B3_DOU-BBpB/?igshid=1w203jywq5p07

#inktober #southerngothic day 17 prompt “Alligator.” Found some studies from The Rescuers movie online and thought that sounded like a good idea for day 17. I love sketchy, messy sketches. Alligators also remind me of a local artist who we kids called “Uncle Bunky.” When I was growing up he had a kids show on a local chanel where he drew wild crazy mixed up animals. Head of an alligator, neck of a giraffe, hind end of an elephant, etc. Uncle Bunky made drawing fun and I drew pages and pages of my own crazy creatures. Haven’t thought of Uncle Bunky in years. What a stellar guy. https://www.instagram.com/p/B35_JpVBr6e/?igshid=djurudbzk3cc
